Fringe (2008)
A sci-fi show only to the sci-fi fans
Fringe is like a mix of criminal minds with x-files... and since those two shows are amazing, Fringe obviously is too (2+2=4), its an awesome sci-fi adventure about the world of high tech and the mysteries of the universe.. the characters are interesting specially the crazy scientist, played by John Noble (Walter Bishop).. He is brilliant!! Its that type of character that any sci-fi fan would like to watch. Its a TV series that have everything, since parallel universes to genetic modifications, since mental abilities to artificial intelligence.. it makes us think: What if?? Its also very well directed with a solid plot where episode by episode we are slowly going to discover something new that is going to help the viewer to unlock the mysteries. Its that type of show where we actually can learn something just by watching it (we can clearly distinguish what is science and what is fiction... its an intelligent show).
I really do not understand all the hate, it must be the sci-fi haters... people, if you do not like the genre, you should not post any stupid comments here (for example i hate romantic dramas... I'm not going to the IMDb bashing it.. its just stupid..grow up people) and statements like "Oh.. its an x-files rip-off"..."its the worst show ever"... "LOST is way better..." just makes me laugh.. Newsflash for the haters: Every single show is a rip-off of something (books, TV series, movies..etc), and complaints about unbelievable/unreal technology?? People how the hell do you guys know, that stuff like that do not exist?? there are so many secrets in this world! Plus, its an sci-fi series and only that should explain everything..LOL
District 9 (2009)
Good... BUT not epic!!
District 9 could be one of the most epic sci-fi masterpieces, but the PLOT HOLES just ruined it! Examples:
- The director could present us some alien background story, besides the alien's planet have 7 moons instead of 1..lol... We're never told why the aliens landed on earth, if the only thing they needed was their fuel (that can be encountered in their pieces of technology), why didn't they do that in the first place before landing on earth???
- Someone here on IMDb said: "why would fuel for a ship genetically modify someone to turn into an alien"... this is not a plot hole... they said in the movie that fluid is made from the aliens DNA... in that way their technology only works if the user is alien... and if the fluid had mutagenic agents, the transformation is possible (Why not? its a sci-fi show..lol)... the movie have plot holes, but common... lets no make even more...lol
- Throughout the film the aliens show aggression, so they aren't entirely peaceful (thats why the humans no longer saw them with "good eyes" and began to oppress the aliens - fine, its a possible scenario). Yet the aliens don't start any uprising with their advanced technology. Why? why they never chose to fight back our oppression?? A reason is needed... they probable fear the humans atomic power... its possible...also when they were moved from their mothership to the Earth they left the guns there (some were illegally smuggled during the transfer), so there were few weapons to make a "revolution", BUT since the aliens were so human alike (in their attitudes and personality), why they never tried it? even knowing they would eventually lose the war!! at least they would take a very good revenge against the humans oppression and sent them a message... right? the main character make such a destruction using those weapons, the aliens could too!!
- Why are almost all the aliens mindless drones, except the one guy who is actually technologically advanced??? its not supposed they being a super intelligent spacetraveller life forms??
- Were there MNU agents in the ship working to obtain the technology it possessed?. I can't imagine that it would be just sitting there for 20+ years empty so that when the aliens flew up to the ship that they could just leave and no people would be on it...lol
- what of the views of the humanitarians (which on any subject there are some)?? There was not any pro-alien ideas presented, so the documentary angle did not work in that aspect.
Its things like those above, that turn the movie not so good... those issues should be better explained and explored!! If there is going to be a sequel, i hope they explain those flaws... this sci-fi story have a lot of potential!!
Why?? Examples:
- Its unique... its a different perspective about Humans Vs aliens!
- The way the perspective switches from mock documentary style to standard third person certainly contributes to it. "Real" news footage and interviewers tell the story in retrospect, as the events of the movie have already occurred when they are being interviewed. I think it all added to the realism of the experience and always manages to stay fresh and surprising throughout. The atmosphere is bleak, dark and realistic, actually making me believe this thing can actually happen here on Earth.
- It's about betrayal, loyalty, trust, relationships, and sacrifice. It can actually be pretty deep and thought provoking with many themes floating around. The story is really a fresh, gritty, original concept, which is good to see nowadays. While the creatures can be most readily described as monsters, though they are like us. Family and friendship are still important ideals in their world. The film explores a fine line between human emotions and monsters. With all the selfishness, hatred, and greed within us, maybe we are the real monsters or at least that's how it can be perceived.
- Awesome CGI, great action and godlike alien weapons(if you guys ever played Unreal (PC Game), you know what im talking about)
- The action is not passed in America... FINALLY!! it was a very good idea placing us, viewers, in another set besides Hollywood!!
- The story moves at an incredible pace and the acting... WOW... just awesome, specially the main character Wikus (Sharlto Copley).. he is a revelation and one of the most memorable aspects of the movie.
I recommend it... Sci-Fi fans will definitely enjoy it! I give it 6.5 to 7 stars! Plot holes are a disappointment, but there is no reason to give the movie 1 star only because of that...LOL, if this is a 1 to 3 stars movie than its impossible to rate Dragon Ball Evolution because there is no negative scale on IMDb (Unfortunelly... but you guys get the point)!
Impact (2009)
I enjoyed it...
Impact is a great entertainment and a clever show with a cool premise - the moon hitting the planet like someone here said. And its much more than that, we have meteorites, a brown dwarf, mysterious anomalies on earth, lots of theoretical and practical discussion about gravity and electromagnetism...etc
For the people who are questioning the science in this show here we go:
1-In our reality there are a lot of theories... lots of them can not be proved (in practice)... the movie just explores that (its sci-fi..lol)
2-(CONTAINS SPOILER) Bigger mass means the Gravity force will be larger, so more attraction between two objects... that is why in this series, the moon become closer to the Earth... the immense mass from the brown dwarf (in that particular dwarf, or part of one, the mass is two times bigger than the earth) that collided to the moon allowed that situation...
3-The awesome Electromagnetic power level (also derived from the impact between the moon and the dwarf) explains the electrical problems and why people or objects started to "fly"!! in the series they said the energy levels are so big, that not only metal objects flout but also humans and animals... since we have the same electromagnetic energy, people also start to levitate.... the authors are not confused about this two forces (gravity and electromagnetic energy)...lol... you guys think they do not ask the opinions to real astrophysicists or Astronomers, like someone here said, they not??? common... the basic stuff is correct... yes we can doubt some things like some effects produced by this new situation or for example the equipment they used to fight the threat...it probably do not exist, but who knows??.. there are so many secrets in the government!! (END SPOILER)
I mean, here we have a good science fiction movie with a good script where we can actually learn about something and think about others subjects, interesting characters, reasonable acting, decent special effects (for a TV show), lots of mystery and speculation about what the hell is happening ... is really in that way or not??... its a situation that never happened.. and it can be possible or not??... that is the magic about science fiction.. what if?!!!!
I know there are better sci-fi shows, but this is a disaster flick, and everything that it is needed to be discussed in this mini-series is referred, along with the emotional response to the situations... this is not a philosophical debate about existence or a movie about the secrets of the universe... what do you haters want?? Common... give it more respect..
For the ones who really enjoy this type of entertainment, go ahead and watch it... 7 stars
Dragonball Evolution (2009)
WHAT the hell is this????
This movie was so bad. It's not just the fact that it didn't resemble the manga or anime or anyway that made it bad, it was also very poorly constructed. So many plot holes, terrible acting, terrible fight choreography, poor character development, mediocre special effects, and a very short final battle...
Who the hell are they marketing this to anyway? They've taken out the stuff that makes it good and different and replaced it with cliché lines. The main character, Goku, who is supposed to be AN ALIEN (therefore with a personality totally different from the humans), now he is a stupid overrated emo teen who only knows to think on girls...lol.. what kind of hero is that??? this no longer have the martial arts/sci-fi/fantasy as main thematics.. now Dragon Ball is a pure teen romantic movie.
Because its an adaptation film from the popular anime\manga created by Toryiama, a few changes were expected, but that doesn't mean it should be so butchered from its source material (why call it DragonBall then??). I don't mind a different story or an alternate timeline. But its when you make a movie that is so removed from its source material, its not even recognizable anymore. The only thing they had for source material was names and the dragonballs itself, nothing else. It was a cash-in pure and simple (taking an advantage to the popular title), there was no effort on this movie at all, its a complete garbage.
What it is "killing" me is the fact that James Wong and Co. are introducing the wrong Dragonball story to the world and with a new story that will put the fans in shock and the non-fans will think we fans are crazy by loving such franchise... DB do not deserve something like that.. it was an awesome show turned into a mockery!!
