Goodbye Solo (2008)
Best film I saw at Toronto Film Festival
Without a doubt this was the best film I saw at the Toronto Film Festival. My girlfriend and I decided to make a trip up there for a few days to see some films, enjoy the city and catch Niagara Falls. We saw some good films, and some not-so-good films, but most of them were good... but none of them captivated us like Goodbye Solo. It was on our short list because we had seen and really liked Chop Shop-- by the same director. This one is even better. The lead actor is just amazing!! This guy is going to win some awards. He is so charming that you can't help but want to watch everything he does. The whole audience was laughing for like the first half of the film because him and the old man - the big dawg! - are just so funny together and the things they say and do together are just great... but it was the ending that really got us. My girlfriend was crying. So were a lot of people around us... And the last shots are really beautiful. I don't know where they filmed it, but the location was amazing. The mountain and the trees and fog... it was just amazing how the filmed those colors and fog, like it wasn't real or something. The film really, really moved us and stayed with us for the rest of our trip and we talked about it a lot on our drive home. Solo changed so much in the film... that guy is a great actor. We will see it again when it comes out for sure.
Great World of Sound (2007)
great indie film
I really enjoyed this film. I saw it with my brother the other night on netflix. The African-American actor was amazing. that guy should be and could be in a lot more films... His performance was captivating. I read about the film and heard the scenes with the talent was done with hidden cameras and mirrors. It is clear because the people who come in are all so real and distinct. The film is unique and original and that goes a long way. The film uses humor and an original story to deal with the American dream, and our obsession with recognition and the current wave of talent shows and reality shows, of fame, fortune and morality. Great first film from a new American director-- someone to follow for sure.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
good bad movie
What a strange film because the first half was a masterpiece and the 2nd half was just not very good. But I still want to say I liked it... we all know that Daniel Day Lewis is amazing in it. So there is nothing more I can write about that. He is amazing. Even the way he crawls like a snake in the beginning was amazing. But the last 30minutes of the movie was almost unwatchable... and even before that I was really getting bored. My girlfriend left after a while. But I still liked it. The first half was just unlike anything I have seen before. The camera work was awesome and the character of Day Lewis was impossible not to watch. The younger kid who played the preacher was really awful and all his scenes were hard to watch due to the bad acting. But overall this film was something original and I liked it, despite half of it being bad. a good-bad movie. Strange, right?
Grizzly Man (2005)
Excellent
I have always loved Herzog's fiction films but had not seen many of his documentaries. I have been rented them and watching them with my girlfriend in the last couple weeks and this one was exceptional! Herzog's dry, ironic voice-over's lead to humor and often times to something profound. Its is amazing how well edited the film is considering there was 1000 hours of footage left behind (in addition to the footage Herzog shot himself for the film. Its very well arranged and keeps your attention from the first frame to the last. The questions raised about how human's behave and the create and destroy are still with me today... as is the score. Its simple and somehow haunting. This is an engaging film for any audience and one of Herzog's best.
