The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre (2021)
Go ahead and have some fun here!
OK so you KNOW you're not going to be watching "Lawrence of Arabia" here, and this doesn't have Daniel Day-Lewis or Meryl Streep appearing in it so don't expect something which needs higher end accents. I will say that I believe DDL or Meryl would have enjoyed appearing in this film as it just looks like everyone is having some fun. Why wouldn't they? There are Wrestlers versus Zombies. You don't see that often, but it's right up there with Cowboys versus Aliens. Alien versus Predator. King Kong versus Godzilla. Kramer versus Kramer even! Give this film a shot and just enjoy the fun you're having.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Okay, I get it.
We humans are terrible. We colonize indigenous beings, exploit the land, have zero respect for existing cultures, and even hunt whales for sport. We're absolutely awful. Thank you James Cameron for bringing this to my attention and hammering it into my skull for three hours. I needed to know this over and over since I guess I didn't get that message from your previous Avatar film. Since we're bound to have several more of these with the exact same message about how terrible we are, I imagine this re-occurring theme is ahead of us for years to come.
I'd really like to enjoy movies again.
On the brighter side, the special effects are amazing, and the futuristic hardware is interesting.
Forever Mine (1999)
If it weren't for Gretchen Mol...
If you're going to watch something by Paul Schraeder, check out his greats - Cat People, Blue Collar, American Gigolo, or those he wrote: Taxi Driver, Bringing Out the Dead, or The Mosquito Coast. This one, well, if it weren't for Gretchen Mol being very easy on the eyes, this would not be worth the time to watch. I appreciate Ray Liotta and Joseph Feinnes as actors, but their talents have been wasted as well. The best I could say was that it was interesting to see the 70s again and be somewhat accurate about it. Still, this film proves that people even with Schraeder's experience and reputation, will sometimes need a paycheck as well.
Fire Country (2022)
My advice for the directors of this series
There's a device you can buy for not much money that would really help this series. It's a strange invention called a "Tripod." This device allows a camera to film without the problems associated with cameramen who are a little jumpy about forest creatures or maybe have an infestation with insects that result in uncontrollable itching that needs attention right during the shoot. These tripods are not terribly expensive, in fact, I bought one at a neighbor's garage sale for a small fee of maybe $1.75. I would highly recommend getting one of these devices to film the scenes that require dramatics and skilled acting from those in front of the screen. Without it, I feel like I'm seeing what a 7-year-old who has had too much candy while suffering from ADHD is seeing. The directors and producers of this program have what appear to be good actors and decent writers, but watching this made me seasick. Please, get a stinkin tripod!
The Green Knight (2021)
Only reviewing one aspect of this film
The other reviews have said exactly what I thought of this film, so I won't dredge up any more than what's already said. I will add one part of the film that just grated against me like nothing else - the music score. The angelic choir and soprano howling was just too much. I know it's supposed to sound mystical and magical, but after a while, it just gets irritating.
Yarik (2008)
You won't feel good after seeing this film
And perhaps you aren't meant to. I was horribly devastated after seeing this, and felt so absolutely horrible about the chain of events depicted in this film. There are some dignified characters in this film, but many who, if they suffered a slow and painful death, that would be too good for them. This is a sad film to watch, and hopefully it can bring about some good in the world by making so many of us aware of the inhumanities depicted here.
Chicago P.D. (2014)
Not Hill Street Blues
Back in the 80s, one of the most popular shows was Hill Street Blues. That program was about a police precinct and the multiple characters who worked there. It was gritty, realistic, and unpredictable. Then, after a few years, there seemed to be a shift. Even the most hardened characters were revealed to have a heart of gold and everyone had a goal of being fair and honest.
This show is not HSB. We now have police who are there to not only do their jobs, but they'll do what needs to be done, no matter the cost. Does that mean that there's a thin line between cop and criminal? Maybe. Does it mean that not all cops are honest good guys? Maybe. Does it mean that the series should be watched to understand the characters and their motivations? Absolutely.
This is a fascinating show that will stay with you after you watch the episodes.
The Circle (2017)
What could possibly go wrong?
You know those horror movies where a group of teenagers start out with "hey guys, let's go camping at that old deserted summer camp where that psychopath massacred all those kids years ago... You know, I heard they never caught that killer!"
The Circle is the digital version of that horror movie. It's one technological advance and breakthrough after another that comes on about as horrific as one can anticipate where one group has all the power and information. How no one could forsee the problems and blowback from some of these plot points are akin to a minor character in a horror movie saying, "you stay here, I'll go outside in the dark and check out that noise."
Overall, this film is worth missing. Watch the latest Jason thriller instead.
