Roadkill (2024)
Mindless but with issues
Sometimes you just point and click and take what comes your way whether it be a pleasant surprise or a disappointment. This film had some cool surprises along the way. The quarrel I have with the flick is the lack of reality and miscellaneous scenes with no connection. She has a car that's fast as lightning and in the police car chase, they are going about 40 mph and the Ford LTD is hot on her bumper. Second, there is no way the crimes that were committed, as many as there were, could be done in such a timeframe and without any trace of blood. Third, there was no way anyone could have been in the trunk now was there any opportunity to put them in there and no way anyone could have gotten them out - not in the time allowed. It was like the director just threw in some shock value scenes to make you go "oooh!" And where did the one police come from and where did it go?
With a bit more reality, the thrill factor could have gone up a few points but as presented, the thrill factor turned into some hilarity. I will say the Hitchhiker completely perfected the "scowl" look and the waitress should have won some award for her "scream."
The Gilded Age (2022)
Started strong, finished week
The first season started strong but the family vying to be accepted was way too rich to not be. Still, the cast delivered along with scenery and costumes.
Second Season, however, is a disappointment on HBO more than the cast. Yes, spoilers ahead. First, that maid could not have gotten married to such a wealthy man without all those ladies not knowing. Second, you give Ada a ministerial husband which was quite nice, only to kill him off in the next episode? I know time flies but that was a dreadful subplot. Third, Oscar loses all the family money, which was entirely possible, with little to no accountability, only to get it back from the dead priest's estate?
I enjoy period pieces but if HBO doesn't write a third season that seems to have some reality and character development, I would say just cancel it. HBO has a history of amazing productions. They need to work on this one.
Heartstopper: Sorry (2023)
Mood Changer
While the series has been a great inspiration at reflecting the ups and downs of teenage love, both gay and straight, the series has also been quite good at not allowing the bullies to win the day, of promoting peace and grace. In this episode Nick stands up to his bully brother and his absent father in a great speech. The failing of this episode comes between Charlie and Ben, whom I believed gave a heartfelt "Sorry" to which Charlie responds badly. I suspect there is a buildup to a mental breakdown coming but frankly, I was ashamed at how he acted. Don't get me wrong, those who have been bullied may have cause to hold resentments and pinned up hostility but this was so out of sync with the series atmosphere. Season 3 has an opportunity to mend Charlie's attitude because the way Season 2 ends, I'm left wondering if Nick and Charlie are truly right for one another given the teenage hormones between them sputters more than it sparks. I have high hopes Ben gets to be a better man in Season 3 and that Charlie finds comfort and self assurance.
