Élite (2018)
Good story destroyed by an obnoxious soundtrack that grates on your nerves
The loud obnoxious music soundtrack grew unbearable after the forth season and I decided to pull the plug on the rest of this. I really enjoyed the first 4 seasons but by the time the 5th season started I just couldn't take the noise anymore.
Our Father's Keeper (2020)
This is NOT what a person with Alzheimer's presents like
Alzheimer's runs in my family so I am well-versed on what a person with Alzheimer's does, how he behaves, and what he looks like. The presentation of this person with Alzheimer's is way out of line with anything I have ever seen. I stopped watching the movie after he was diagnosed with the disease because I got so turned off with what I was seeing. The writer(s) clearly never met a person who had Alzheimer's.
American Experience: The Amish: Shunned (2014)
Could have been interesting
The ideas, information, context, feelings, presented in this long, drawn out segment could easily have been covered in half an hour without leaving anything out.
I say this while feeling that much of the story was not covered even in the long, boring, presentation. IMDb lists it as 60 min long. It is 100 minutes long.
If I had to give a simple summary I' d call it a sterile presentation.
It appears that the Amish have no sexuality. Why do I say this? Because no reference, direct nor indirect, was made to sexual conflict in the teens who had difficulty with they rules. The only difficulty seemed to be either not being able to have cell phones or not being able to wear cool clothing.
This is a short summary and I just scratched the surface here of all the facets of living and it's discontents missing from this segment.
Lifted (2010)
Hallmark cards class of movie
The Hallmark Hall of Fame TV series has original movies that are all touchy-feely, family, warm, stories. They used to be 7/10 movies (my rating) going back up to several years ago but of late they rarely rank above 6/10 or 2½/4 stars.
This movie's theme is similar to the Hallmark films except Lifted is not well written nor is it edited well. The acting is very good. Sometime during the last 10 minutes of the movie they must have decided to change the ending. That's fine except they forgot to go back and edit out the scenes that no longer made sense with the new ending.
I do not want to add spoilers here but should you watch this film and when the surprise comes into the script near the end think of how events of 15 minutes earlier no longer make sense.
Even without this editing lapse I doubt I'd rate this movie much higher than 6/10.
Gypsy 83 (2001)
Good acting and script idea, poor execution.
I am not a movie critic or film buff. I watch for enjoyment. The acting is very good. The script, editing, sound mixing, and directing of this film was not. Too much background noise, words said that could not possible come from the characters mouth, unbelievable scenes cropping up from nowhere.
A young man running away from his Amish family, who doesn't know how to fill a tank with gas, when ineptly shown how says "awesome". This is just one of many instances in a script that screams AMATEUR writing.
I spent as much time trying to focus out from the poor production quality as I did watching the actual film.
Voor een verloren soldaat (1992)
Skip the movie, a fantasy, and read the book, an autobiography
This movie did not feel right for the relationship he was portraying - a love affair between a 20 something guy and a boy just reaching puberty. It is a love story.
I've met adults who've had sex with boys this age and I've met adults who had sex with adults when they were this age. Things just didn't fit so I got the book and read it. There is very little relationship between the book and the movie other than title, place and time frame. The book is a story about the repeated rape of a boy.
The thing that bothered me about this mediocre movie was the lack of any emotional content. It seemed like there was emotion but there wasn't. The book which unfolds entirely differently than the movie also lacks real emotion, just what I'd expect from an adult, the author, who was raped at a tender age. An 11 year old boy who has an emotional warm sexualized relationship with an adult does not lead an emotionless life as an adult. One who is raped, sex with no emotion and unwanted, usually becomes an emotionless adult whose main emotional expression is ready anger.
Get the book. It is worth reading. Skip the movie.
