Quiet Country (2010)
A twisted voyage into the madness that permiates within us all.
I sat down to watch this film expecting the very same bland brand of banal menuscia that student films tend to breed. But boy was I wrong! Young Josh Gardner has a unique grasp on the horror genre not scene in decades. This film transcends genres as well as cinema as a whole. It will leave you lying awake in bed begging it to stop haunting your dreams, nay, nightmares. Although this film is anything but a nightmare, more like the sweetest, angelic dream any of us will ever have.
Well done Josh Gardner, well done.
ps; I would like to note that scribe extraordinaire Barry Mottier had a hand in this film, and you all know how I feel about his stunning work.
The Warden (2007)
One ordinary night turns out to be anything but...
It's been two years since I was blessed enough to be granted witness to this masterpiece of cinematic achievement. A truly mesmerizing and haunting vision of missed opportunities, shared experiences and time lost. Excuse me while I wipe the mist from my eyes. When I saw this movie, and when I think of it now, I am filled with excitement at the prospect of the bright future careers of the maniacally brilliant film-makers who brought The Warden to life. Ryan Finn directs in what feels like a symbiotic manner with his actors. Everything feels so fluid, it's as if he's working through them without them even knowing it. Has there ever truly been a director whom we could say this about? I don't think so. Then there's the screenplay penned by young up and coming scribe Barry Mottier. A screenplay that deserves its own special place in cinematic lore for it's enchanting and consuming mysterious plot that grabs hold of you from frame one and doesn't let go until years after the final frame has graced your viewing device.
I couldn't recommend this film higher. It is the Citizen Kane of shorts.
I would pay $16,000 for a copy of my own.
The Grudge (2004)
I now have a grudge, against the person(s) responsible for this abomination of film-making.
I saw this "film" Wednesday night as part of an advanced screening and although it was free i still feel the need to request my money back or at least some sort of compensation for the 90 minutes of my life that were lost watching this tragedy. For one thing the plot sucked. oh wait, THERE WAS NO PLOT! What!?! a person is murdered so they in turn murder anyone who enters the place they were murdered? what? how ridiculous can you get?
Not to mention how the deaths in the film take place *semi-spoiler* approximately 8 innocent people are killed by the ring hybrid characters (more on that in a minute) except for one person, he is killed by one of the earlier victims of the main killers, THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!! its like the main killers decided this guy wasn't worth their time so they sent yoko to do it for them, soooooo stupid.
And lets not forget about the striking similarity to the ring. Namely the main "villains" of the "film." its basically like they took that little girl and split her into 2 characters. 1: they aged her about 26 years but kept the dirty white dress/nightgown/whatever and the long, dirty hair that covers her face that is so scary blah blah. 2: they kept the young creepy child but turned her into a little boy that meows like a cat for some strange, stupid and unsurprizingly unexplained reason.
According to the radio personality that introduced the film to us this has been hailed as the "scariest movie in Japanese history." if that's true then my opinion of Japanese taste, especially when it comes to film, is that they have horrible if no taste whatsoever.
One last thing, this film can be best summed up by two comments i heard random people in the theater spout out after one of the main "scary" scenes.
the soccer mom looking lady next to me said "oh my god i think I'm going to cry" while about 2 rows back i heard someone else say "sooo stupid." a phrase that not only can be used to describe the "film" but anyone who would actually enjoy the film. good day and save your money for the love of god DO NOT SEE THIS FILM!!!
