Dick Dickster (2018)
They Want Dick Dickster
With the bleakness of "Hail Caesar" and the silliness of "The Room", THEY WANT DICK DICKSTER is anchored by a hilarious performance by character actor Robert R. Shafer (Bob Vance, "The Office"; "Psycho Cop").
Now have fun recommending it to people and having everyone think you're recommending a porno film. Spoiler alert: everyone's going to think it's a porno.
And don't do any drinking games revolving around the utterance of"Dick Dickster." You will die of alcohol poisoning. Or embarrassment. Or both.
Hot to Trot (1988)
Marxist Farce
People may think I am crazy, but I feel like if they didn't have the talking animals (well, any animals at all), it would serve as a great satire. See, you have Dabney Coleman, which many remember as the boss in 9 to 5. In the 80s, he served as a face to the ruling class. His character, Walter, is the boss. Then comes Bobcat Goldthwait's character, Fred. Fred gets an inheritance of many shares of the company. Walter thinks Fred, the face of the proletariat, is dumb enough to make an offer of, like, $50 for all the shares that would be worth millions. So, yeah, without the animals this would make for great satire. (All of the above is not at all spoiling anything. All happen towards the very beginning.)
The Brass Teapot (2012)
The Brass Teapot is beautiful
From my review title, I mean I find the teapot itself and the film as a whole quite beautiful. It follows the structure of a fairytale and is quite entertaining throughout. I came across the film through being a huge fan of Juno Temple. After first seeing her in the amazing Greg Araki film Kaboom, I have come to the conclusion that she is wonderful in everything she is in, and everything she is in is wonderful. It remains true here. To avoid spoilers, I will review the film as it involves its setup, which is masterfully executed. A young couple needs money (as many can relate), and a small car accident in front of a thrift store changes their entire life. At the thrift store, Juno's character finds a gorgeous brass teapot (hence the title) and runs with it. By this, I mean literally runs with it. And this teapot spits out cash, but how this happens is wonderfully twisted. I will recommend this to anyone and everyone. Juno Temple must not be stopped.
American Teen (2008)
Most honest portrayal of Teen life
I really, really, really love this film. It's one of those few movies who are daring enough to show things as they really are. Paramount is sitting on something that could explode. I'm just hoping they will promote it well. Teens, by nature, don't go see documentaries at the theater, but I feel many would give this one a chance. The poster with posing as the Breakfast Club is pretty petty to me. Not the route I would have chosen. Mtv is where the publicity needs to be. The film itself, I can relate to all of the characters, but mostly Hannah. I love Hannah! Aspiring filmmaker, trying desperately to get out of her hometown. She has her total freak out moments that reminded me of my own. It captures the excitement and fear of senior year. There were times I wanted to reach out and hug these kids. I'm doing my best to help promote this film, and I hope everyone that's gone to screenings of it will do the same. The director was super nice, and really pretty. (Just thought I'd add that!)
The Promotion (2008)
A Pleasant Surprise
I really enjoyed this film. I saw it at an advanced screening not knowing what to expect. I had only heard bad ratings, but that never really affects me. Plus, it's a free movie. As I am a college student, I cannot turn that down. There are many films along the same lines, but this time, it isn't clear who the better man is. There is no clear cut "good guy" and "bad guy". The characters are very real in that they all have flaws. With a great support cast including the Office's Jenna Fisher, SNL's Fred Armisen, and Masi Oka (heroes) and a hilarious cameo from Arrested Development's Jason Bateman, I highly recommend this hilarious gem.
