Irréversible (2002)
Not Shocking but Dull
Did no-one else find this film simply dull to watch. After hearing the hype and all the inevitable Memento comparisons I thought I'd give it a go only to find it has none of the originality or spark that Memento had.
I found the rape scene disturbing, but not to watch, I just found that a bit dull. It was disturbing because I couldn't help but get the feeling the director was objectifying Alex and the 'she deserved it' vibe was a bit too much.
Spoiler** I found the revealment of the fact that she was pregnant towards the end an extremely crass plot device worthy of a high school film students.
Overall a dull film and disturbing for all the wrong reasons - 2/10
Nationale 7 (2000)
Brilliant Film
I saw this on BBC4 recently having previously never heard of it. I was surprised I hadn't as it is a brilliant, funny and rewarding film. The serious topic is treated with warmth and respect and I found the last scene especially touching.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Shock Tactics that mean nothing
Yes this film does leave you in 'shock and awe' at the end and you could be fooled into thinking you have just seen a great movie. However, when you've had time to rationalise things it is obvious this film is an empty shell of tradegy which the root is caused by 'evil drugs'. There have been comments that this film is 'extremely realistic' and 'what drugs do to you'. These statements are ridiculous to the majority of people who live in the real world. This film shows the almost comi-tradegy spiral of 4 people into a 'drug hell' which could have been taken straight out of a government 50's educational film. It lacked sensitivity, reason and any notion of reality, an absolute joke of a film.
Lilja 4-ever (2002)
Brilliant, heartbreaking film
I found the film to be very engaging, Lilja herself is not meant to be 'everywoman' it is a very personal film about her and not about prostitution in general. Chris commented on the fact that the film opens up no solutions - I'm not sure what kind of solutions could be suggested in the film and I'm really not sure that that was the point.
It is a beautifully shot film with characters whose lives and roles tear you apart and will guarantee you leave swallowing the lump in your throat.
