Punch (III) (2023)

I would rather be Punched
7 May 2024
I would rather be punched than have to sit through this again. The sound guy for this must have lied in his resume or maybe it was just something that went wrong. Whatever the cause the sound was muffled and it made it difficult for me to make out most of the dialogue. The location and the location shots were good. The lead actress seemed capable the actress that played the mother was chewing through the scenery ( a bit over the top ) . We have seen this story before and done better. If only the sound was better but it wasn't. Less than 90 minutes but felt like 2:30 . The one thing I liked was the ending . The ending was a nice twist but not enough to redeem the film.

Bizarre + Weird = Entertaining
20 April 2024
The movie is not meant to be taken too seriously so lighten up people giving it a low rating!

This is a fun and dark film that will have you asking yourself "What would I do?" Though the dark subject matter may be too dark for some I enjoyed it. There were a few jump scares and watching our main character slowly lose touch with reality was , dare I say, fun. If I were to compare this with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" I would have to honestly say "Digging for Death" is more fun and less predictable. This movie doesn't try to teach us any lessons because no one wants to sit through a movie that is nothing but a propaganda piece for DEI ( that's what Disney and the major studios are for). If you have a dark sense of humor ( for example, if you laughed while Ray Liotta was eating his own brain in "Hannibal") you might appreciate this indie gem.

The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (2003 TV Movie)
1/10
Cashing in on King
24 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings and welcome to my swamp shack I'm Dr. Doc Dread (not a real doctor), a master of both time and space and a huge fan of horror movies. Come in , come in. I don't get many visitors here. Watch your step those power cords are high voltage. They are part of my experiments on dimensional travel. Pull up a chair and let me tell you about a movie I just watched "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer".

What do you mean you never heard of it! You do know who Stephen King is?

His book sales are over 400 million and many have been made into films. Unfortunately some of those films just don't... but I digress. I was telling you about "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer". If you haven't seen it yet you may want to first watch the TV miniseries "Rose Red".

"Rose Red" the miniseries was based on a novel by King. After King published "Rose Red" Ridley Pearson published a prequel to "Rose Red" titled "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer : My Life at Rose Red". To be completely honest I didn't read it...but, I did watch the movie. Let me set this up a little for you. John Rimbauer (played by Steven Brand) is a filthy rich tycoon. John meets Ellen ( played by Lisa Brenner) and sweeps her off her feet. John is dashing, exciting and very very wealthy. Did I say he is also a sexual psychopath?

Ellen was too busy looking at the diamond engagement ring and the mansion named Rose Red to notice the missing girls that John was fond of visiting.

A little about the movie. Mechanically the movie was fine. It was shot well with interesting angles and edited into a coherent story. First airing in May of 2003 on ABC. Sweep week is in May and the major networks all attempted to draw huge numbers of viewers. The network with the highest rating (number of viewers) could then use those numbers to attract advertisers and determine the cost of advertising. Rose Red (the miniseries) and the King name was a huge success and ABC was hoping to capitalize again, but spent a significantly smaller amount of money.

The result "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life At Rose Red".

(Without warning a fuzzy, white child sized critter bounds into the laboratory!) "Doc! Hey Doc! Hey Doc, do you want to hear a joke?" It interrupts enthusiastically.

Please forgive Bucky he is my creation and cohost on my show. What is he you ask? He is a "Ratbit" a rat rabbit hybrid with some human DNA thrown in. I was tampering with the laws of nature... it was a passing phase.

Bucky we have a guest. Go ahead tell us a joke.

"Why was the astronaut's diary blank?" Bucky asks his eyes wide and mouth agape in anticipation of delivering the punchline. He pauses timing is everything with comedy.

"It was filled with space." (He laughs at his own joke and bounces out of the lab as quickly as he entered.) I'm sorry about that. Unfortunately that isn't the only thing I'm sorry about. I'm sorry I'm about to give my opinion of "The Diary..." yada yada yada. I was disappointed basically that's my review. "Rose Red" was a decent ghost story reminiscent of "The Legend of Hell House" 1973 and similar to "The Evil" 1978 and let's not forget "The Haunting" 1963. "The Diary..." was more like a gothic romance with tragic themes, characters and consequences. Movies based on Stephen King's epic novels and his short stories are notorious for falling short of the base material. Though I didn't read "The Diary..." and though it wasn't written by The Master of Modern Horror my opinion is it falls short of actually being a horror movie. Thus I was disappointed. There was atmosphere and the players were adequate the sets were believable. There was even a valuable life lesson, don't marry for money. This movie may be better suited for a cable network known for appealing to female viewers than a network know for horror movies.

Stupid Humans...
20 May 2023
Okay here we go.... We have all watched a movie that had us questioning the characters decisions. Like "Don't go in the basement" or grab the kitchen knife before you go investigate the strange noise. These characters make some of the stupidest decisions before they are picked off. Never split up always arm up. Also when being chased / slaughtered by a psychopath never never never stop to have sex... I mean really what were you thinking? The story and stupidity of the characters make this waste of time ridiculous. The actors do what they can. The scenery and locations are nice and that drone shot over an endless sea of forest fantastic ( though used in every movie since The Shining). If you want to sit with friends and riff on a movie this would qualify.

Better than I thought it would be
22 April 2023
Greetings all Dr. Dread here I rate horror movies on The Monster Channel ( look for me ). Low budget and unknown actors , I wasn't expecting much. This is a story about a very angry witch that stays young by kidnapping/ killing/ eating (?) children. I think the actors did an excellent job. The story has layers and several un explored backstories. A dead magician and his grieving grandson, a "Tomboy" falling in love, older siblings that are jerks. This movie isn't great but it is better than many of the movies I've seen lately. I can imagine sine it was made 10 years ago some of the actors have gone on to bigger and much better productions.

Don't forget to look for me I watch bad movies so you don't have to. Dr. Dread Reviews.

Fun and charming
24 December 2022
I just finished Amityville Christmas Vacation.

It was fun. Very original. The silly story carried the film and really demonstrates that it doesn't take a huge amount of money to make an entertaining movie. Nice work and Merry Christmas! The story is corny, the characters are silly , the dialogue is funny. I hope that Steve Rudzinski continues making movies like this ( I'm sure a bigger budget would have helped but a bigger budget may have taken away the charm this film has). It's Christmas Eve 2022. It's 7 degrees outside so it was a perfect time to watch this movie. Because my review has to be at least six hundred characters I had to add the last couple of sentences.

Low budget indie surprise
25 October 2022
I was pleasantly surprised by this low budget indie.

The location was ideal and set the tone for the film. The characters of Drayton, Leather Face and Rex were sufficiently menacing and they carried the story along nicely. The victims characters were interesting and they had back stories that fleshed them out. I believe great care was taken to keep the "look" authentic to the time period (vehicles, home decor ect.) . The butcher room was scary and blood covered giving the victims no hope of escape. Steve Merlo will be a name to follow and I look forward to his future projects. I think it was an awesome idea to release this fan film on YouTube allowing it as much exposure as possible. Nice job Steve and crew the film kept me entertained.

Love letter
15 January 2020
I finally got around to watching "Tales Of Dracula" (2015). It would be unfair of me to compare it to a big budget extravaganza like "Van Helsing" (2004). "Tales of Dracula" got so much right that "Van Helsing" got wrong. The most important things that "Tales of Dracula" got right. 1. It was filmed in glorious black and white 2. It was made for the love of the classic Universal Monsters 3. Frankenstein's Monster's and the Wolfman's makeup. ( thank you Ron Chamberlain). "Tales of Dracula" is a love letter written directed and staring a fan that one day said "What if?" What if Dracula survives and returns to his home? What if Frankenstein's creation didn't perish in a fire ? What if the Wolfman sought out Dr. Frankenstein to cure him of the curse? With an estimated budget of $20,000 and a running time of 75 minutes the films best moments are when the monsters are on screen. Though not a perfect film it is a fun film and it was nice to see my old friends as I remember them in black and white and not CGI images. The film is a available on DVD at Oldies for around $6.00 or stream it for free from YouTube. And remember my friends as always keep it scary

Assimilate (I) (2019)
2/10
Why bother?
3 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Had some extra time with the Mrs so ,Netflix. We decided to watch 2019's "Assimilate" synopsis copied from IMDB "Three friends making a web series about their town discover that their neighbors are being killed and replaced by creatures who are perfect copies of their victims." Which sounds very similar to "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" 1956 - "A small-town doctor learns that the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates." Which sounds like " Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" 1978 "When seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade a small town, replicating the residents one body at a time." I could go on and on there are plenty of remakes of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" 1978's version wasn't too shabby but 1956's the original was the best. Why "Assimilate" ...? The film makers did try to spin the story in a new way making the leads teens/ young adults. The film makers threw in a video blogging teen as a major character. There is only a little bit of shaky camera footage. The plant pods were replaced by ants that gathered into a larger critter then collected DNA through the bite drawl blood method. Not sure how the duplicate grew but once it was full size it traces down it's DNA donor in the nude and absorbs the donor's memoirs by placing it's hand on the donor's head. That's all I'm giving away... the story is unoriginal and frankly kind of lazy. 1.5 SKULL rating out of a possible 4 ( it's not awesome) As always keep it scary my friends

Boring
27 August 2019
I just got done watching "The Frozen Dead" 1966. Who among us isn't a fan of resurrected Nazi movies? "Dead Snow", "Outpost" and "Frankenstein's Army" and lets not forget the classic "Shock Waves" 1977! This movie was made in the United Kingdom and stars Dana Andrews who you might remember from "Curse of the Demon" 1957. This film also stars Anna Palk who you may remember from " The Earth Dies Screaming" 1964. Like most U.K. movies made during this time frame "The Frozen Dead" suffers from a slow pace and poor special effects ( note wall of arms ). Did I say slow? Very , very slow with talking talking talking talking lots of talking. There are some fun parts/ I mean creepy parts in the movie and some interesting doctor scenes with flashing lights control boards wires and jars of strange fluid. My rating may seem a little high for a snooze fest and I'm sure younger viewers will give up on this film 20 minutes in. I like this film and if you watch it I hope you like it also... So make yourself a pot of coffee and enjoy watching resurrected Nazis shambling around chained together so they don't wander off and severed limbs reaching and clutching.

I would give this movie a rating of 2 out of four SKULLS (but I really like Mad Scientists movies) I would recommend it to fans of B-movies drink some energy drinks and enjoy.

What are you watching? And as always keep it scary my friends. πŸ‘‰πŸ’€πŸ‘ˆ

Please don't play with dead stuff.
7 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
#alanormsby #lastnightsmovie #DrDreadReviews #NotARealDoctor

SPOILERS ( if you haven't seen this yet go watch it ) Last night's movie was "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" . I am looking at this film through the rose colored glasses of nostalgia. I first saw this film on television and it was my first experience with flesh eating zombies. I'm not sure at what age I became a horror movie obsessed creature of the night but much like Count Dracula the horror bug bit me and I've been infected ever since. I know for sure it was before I had turned eight because I remember my grandfather's disapproval of Dr. Shock at the apartment where we lived before we moved. Time moves on ( depending on what dimension you occupy) I had seen "White Zombie" 1932 ,"Zombies of Mora Tau" 1957 and other zombie movies where the undead shambled slowly along doing their masters bidding. Then one Saturday afternoon while I was glued to the television "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" came on we didn't have a color TV so I watched it in GLORIOUS BLACK AND WHITE. It was creepy and scary and shocking and the zombies were a vicious blood thirsty swarm escape was impossible. I wasn't aware of "Night of the Living Dead" even though that masterpiece was released 4 years prior to CSPWDT. In rewatching CSPWDT I can tell you it didn't age well. Fashion in 1972 was weird. Some of the dialogue is also a holdover from back then. Look past that ... The film is almost an hour and a half long the action starts while the credits are still rolling the pacing is well done and the suspense builds well for the first half hour when we learn that the ghouls are actors and Jeffery pees his pants. Then at about 42 minutes the dark powers are called upon in the foggy graveyard at midnight while Orville Dunworth , propped up on a cross maker, watches on. Well as I'm so fond of saying... AND THEN EVERYTHING GOES HORRIBLY WRONG!!! As the small group of actors/ want-a-be Satanist make their way back to the cabin to further desecrate poor Orville , the dead slowly begin to crawl from their tombs. The last 20 minutes of the film highlight the fantastic zombie makeup effects created by Alan Ormsby. During the last 15 minutes the tension is thick as the characters desperately attempt to survive. Directed by Bob Clark ( most well know for A Christmas Story) this being only his second full length movie he appears more than just capable but very talented. Camera movement close-ups zoom in and outs. Major kudos to Carl Zittrer the weird music definitely added much to the creepy atmosphere of this film. The actors aren't always convincing some look like they are having too much fun. The one line insults through most of the film seem like longtime friends busting on each other. Honestly the only actor that was wooden was Orville ( the dead guy , how he kept a straight face is beyond me). My favorite characters were Jeffery ( Jeff Gillen) and Anya ( Anya Ormsby). Anya's character is spaced out throughout the film wide/crazy eyes. The character of Alan (Alan Ormsby) comes across sometimes sounding a bit too theatrical (which I believe is intentional). Having seen CSPWDT before "Night Of The Living Dead" , it (CSPWDT) is my favorite of the two and not just because the zombies are scarier. If you haven't seen "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" what are you waiting for. I give this film my highest rating and recommend it . 4 πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€ skulls ... so what are you watching? And remember keep it scary my friends.

Copycat (1995)

Very Good .

#copycat #lastnightsmovie #DrDreadReviews #notarealdoctor

Happy gazpacho!!!! Last night's movie was "Copycat" (1995) starring Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter. I am sure Mrs Dread and I rented this one out more than once. Not a horror movie per say but a thriller/suspenseful/serial killer movie. The 80's / 90's serial killers were in the news at least weekly. There were also the movies many made for TV or cable most docu-dramas. Other than "Silence Of The Lambs" this one "Copycat" is especially well done, well acted, suspenseful music, well paced, creepy villain and ineffective or broken heroes. If I were to give "Silence Of The Lambs" 4 SKULLS (my top rating) then I would have to give "Copycat" a 3.995 SKULL rating, I think it's that good. If you like suspenseful/serial killer movies "Copycat" is perfect for you. What are you watching? As always ... keep it scary my friends πŸ‘‰πŸ’€πŸ‘ˆ

Crappy knock off.
7 August 2019
Last night's movie was "The Silence" (2019). Mrs. Dread had off of work last night!!!! I was very happy to have a late dinner of tacos and watching a Netflix movie. We picked the 2019 SciFi/Horror movie "The Silence". A family struggles to survive when subterranean bat-like creatures (several nonillion) escape from their underground lair to wreak havoc upon all noisy surface dwellers. ( why doesn't anything ever wreak happiness?) I have not seen "A Quiet Place" but judging from the release dates I have an idea the "The Silence" may be a crappy knock off. About the movie ( no spoilers) the CGI critters weren't bad. The pacing and dialogue were good as was the music. Tucci and Shipka played their parts very well. An outstanding performance by Billy MacLellan (The Reverend) .The story had holes and in my opinion the ending was abrupt and unfortunately subpar. The Mrs. and I agree we wouldn't bother watching it again. We agree this film only deserves 1.5 Skulls out of 4. What are you watching? And as always keep it scary my friends. πŸ‘‰πŸ’€πŸ‘ˆ

The Invitation (I) (2015)

Do you have time to waste?
9 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Last night's movie was "The Invitation" 2015 Currently available on Netflix. The description for the movie was vague but Mrs. Dread and I decided to give it a chance. The premise was implausible. I wouldn't go to a dinner party hosted by my "ex" or the "ex" of my significant other. Let's throw in a dead child that the "ex" and I had and are still experiencing massive amounts of guilt and grieve over. Then EVERYTHING GOES HORRIBLY WRONG. 🚧🚨🚧🚨🚧🚨🚧🚨🚧🚨spoilers ahead🚨🚧🚨🚧🚨🚧 Turns out the dinner party wasn't just a chance to reconnect with old friends. The "ex" and her new husband have just returned from a commune in Mexico and are on a recruiting drive. (Raise your hand if you would leave this party before the appetizers were served.) Then the hosting couple ( weird smiles on their faces ) play a video for the guests of a women dying amongst cult members. They play a weird party game which causes one guest to finally say she feels uncomfortable and she leaves ( or does she ). The story goes on... the ending is good but the events that lead up to it just don't make sense or I'm just antisocial and don't go to enough dinner parties to understand what is and what is not acceptable behavior. Out of 4 skulls I give it a 1.5 Skull rating. The Mrs agrees.
