The Children of Huang Shi (2008)
no thanks!
Strange film, felt like a made for TV movie. It’s supposed to be set in 1937 but looks more like 2007. The acting is one-dimensional and lazy at best.
Couldn’t help laughing at an English guy wanting to teach basketball instead of cricket or soccer. Seems like an attempt to curry favor with Chinas fad of basketball. Then things change down a gear when it becomes a road movie. I thought the children were the worst thing in the movie, they made it almost unwatchable.
At the end of the movie, I felt as if I’d just wasted 2hrs of my life watching a load of garbage. Give it a miss
Rock Odyssey (1987)
I got a headache after watching this
This is quite easy to review. If you‘ve ever see Josie & the Pussycats (cartoons) where in the middle of the story there’s a musical montage, usually involving a chase, then think of that for about the duration of the movie & viola that’s it.
At the end you even get to see a parade of characters such as Fred Flintstone Yogi Bear George Jetson & so on. guess this was the re-tooled version I saw.
It's supposed to be a musical story, starting from the 50s, there’s a reference to Elvis then some songs, these are not the original recordings, rather someone else’s interpretations. most of the animation involves a guy & girl running away from sth, or perhaps it’s a comment on what you should do if you ever see a copy of this movie. There are some attempts to generalize drug use that seem childish & trite & some more running away.
There are some truly bizarre moments in the movie, especially to the Beatles "yesterday". (WOW! The storyboard to this must have been crazy) & soon after that a lobster tries, & fails to repair an outboard engine (never let a lobster near an engine, it will always end badly) avoid this one at all costs. plz
Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2008)
Should would could = gripe
Totally disagree with the other reviews
As a documentary, it wasn’t impartial. To my thinking, it only gave a very narrow view of the situation. Apart from lisp’s incessant complaining, it seems obvious why the band/person never acquired the success he/they feel so cheated out of,
1-he’s an average guitarist (one trick pony, player) 2-he’s a below average singer (bark bake shout bark) 3-questionalble songwriter/tunesmith (each song sounds like a clone of the last)
This alone would explain the failings of the band. But also, the fact that lips is happy to accept handouts from his family, so he can “Wait for it” trip off & record an album! Or drift around in part-time work, until.. “Wait for it” a tour becomes available.
Rather than commit to a real job he finds it easier to do the minimum amount of work possible hanging around for someone to contact him. After getting the blow off from EMI Canada, he gripes about younger talent. I expect if you had gone back 60 years when he was a teenager he would have complained about "how many old artists there are" holding him back.
Having said that. You should see this movie & see a very self-centered person feed his ego & gripe a lot.
The Eagle Has Landed (1976)
Went the Day Well? part 2?
I disagree with the last review about the movie being original, as it seems more of a whimsical version of 'Went the Day Well?.
The cast are as stiff as a Huns helmet. Caine hardly moves his neck, is he acting or went to bed in an odd position? When the German stars playing with his organ in the church it becomes all too obvious this was supposed to be a send-up.
I tried the whistling trick with two rottweilers & ended up with my left arm amputated below the elbow & months of rehabilitation, I tried it again with two Yorkshire terriers & ended up with a missing testical.
Anyway when seeing this when it first came out it already seemed dated & cheesy.
I think most of the 'Carry On" cast were still alive at the time & would have been a great help/support in bringing a giggle to this long slow movie.
An opportunity missed alas. Oooh vicar
