I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
Purposely Random - Brilliant - Hilarious!
I honestly can barely remember Tim on SNL - but wow - he's a genious! Every sketch is completely unpredictable to the point where you'd think no one else would find it funny - but clearly there is some universal, hidden comedic gold Tim has unearthed. Watch the first sketch and you'll be hooked.
White Tide: The Legend of Culebra (2018)
If you liked American Animals...
You will love this. Very similar except instead of actors, the real-life people portray themselves in most scenes. Affable characters, interesting mix of interviews and reenactments (not just talking heads), and laugh out loud funny at the right moments. It had me wondering what was going to happen next from start to finish.
Dumbo (2019)
Not As Good As the Sum of Its Parts
The weak child actor performance broke this movie. So, so stiff.
There were way too many creative liberties to bother calling this movie "Dumbo". It was a completely different story altogether.
I felt no emotional connection to CGI Dumbo and his mother like I had with the handdrawn original.
This is not a 1-star movie and the effort is visible - but it could have been amazing if they just stuck to the original characters and songs.
The Mule (2018)
Surprised How Much I Enjoyed This Movie
I'm not a Clint Eastwood follower by any means and solely saw this film because it was the only film at my AMC I hadn't already seen. I was expecting a slow, snooze fest and instead was captivated from start to finish. This isn't a movie with a groundbreaking script - it's a character study and feels incredibly personal, like Eastwood is wrapping everything he's learned in his storied life and presenting it to the audience as his final farewell.
There was only one scene with prostitutes and booty dancing I found uncomfortable and out of place. Which is unfortunate, because otherwise this is a great film for older families to see together.
The Grinch (2018)
Vanilla and Forgettable
I'm not a huge fan of Illumination but at least their past movies have a distinct POV. The Grinch introduces high-tech tweaks to the story but other than that, strays almost too far from the pop culture humor route. At the same time, the script lacks the substance and magic it needs to become a Christmas classic.
A big miss was Benedict Cumberbatch's voice generic vocal performance. Not sure why he didn't choose a deeper register because it literally sounds nothing like him.
The one bright spot was Keenan Thompson. He played a small role but earned the film's few laughs.
Overall, skip it and watch it when it's free on streaming. It's of similar quality to Smallfoot - but I'd choose Smallfoot hands down.
Single Parents (2018)
Taran Killam Shines but Nothing Else Does
I'm writing this review while only two episodes have aired but it's clear this series isn't going to last. It's a single camera comedy without a laugh track, but with the humor of a sitcom. It isn't quite real or over the top enough to work, and the script lingers in an awkward middle ground.
Taran Killam is proving himself to be a star after departing SNL. He's reminiscent of a cross between Will Ferrell and Jason Sudeikes. But Brad Garrett is a walking stereotype and the rest of the adult characters aren't memorable.
The child actors share equal screentime with the adults. While a couple are good, many are painful to watch. In contrast, the parents and kids in "Big Little Lies" are an example of a show that got its casting right.
Overall, it's only a half-hour show you don't have to pay very much attention to. So if there's nothing else to watch, it's pleasant enough to throw on Hulu.
The Good Cop (2018)
More of a 6.5 - but reminiscent of "Monk"
So.. this show isn't breaking any new ground - but if you're a fan of "Monk", it's sort of like a warm, welcomed reunion. Coming from the same creator, "The Good Cop" seems like an escuse to write some more clever mysteries with a generous dose of light hearted jokes thrown in.
Make no mistake - Tony Sr. and Tony Jr. are no Adrien and Sharona/Natalie. In fact, I find Danza cringy when the show is pushing for charming. Come to think of it, his casting is the primary flaw of the show.
But...it's a casually fun viewing experience, you'll enjoy and probably finish in a few days.
A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)
Hilarious - and I hate Family Guy
I watched this 100% expecting to hate it and ended up loving it from start to finish. The storyline is clever, the jokes are hilarious, and the cast is first-rate. Seth MacFarlane actually comes off very sweet and as a protagonist, he's easy to root for. Theron, Neeson, Silverman and Ribisi are perfectly cast. Definitely give this movie a shot.
American Vandal: The Dump (2018)
Blown Away
Without giving anything away, the last two episodes take a rather dramatic turn. It all culminates with a remarkably impactful finale that's one of the truest social commentaries on the digital generation I've ever seen captured on film.
I almost think the show becomes too serious - but all in all, grateful for the message/warning it teaches. Again, there's never been a show like this in any network! I have no idea what to watch now :/.
American Vandal: The Brownout (2018)
Fresh Story, Great Cast, Some of the Best Writing on TV
I loved the first season and was expecting season two to be predictable and over-the-top. Nope! The story is fresh and the writing continues to impress. I'm only 1.5 episodes in but already addicted. This series deserves Emmy recognition!
I Feel Pretty (2018)
Please Don't Listen to the Haters
I have never spent time writing an IMDB review but this movie deserves a much higher rating. Not only is the message important and heartfelt for girls, women, and the men in their lives, but it's also freaking hilarious! I'm not a Amy Schumer fangirl by any means but she was extremely easy to like and identify with in this role, and her chemistry with the leading man was completely believable and warm. Michelle Williams was the icing on the cake.
Please do yourself a favor and see this movie and then comeback and leave a high rating. More people need it's message today more than ever in this insta-society!
