Juggernaut (2003)
A short look at the effect of religion on everyday life
In this documentary an impression is given, just by images and sound. Without commentary you see the great role that religion plays in the lives of the normal Indian population.
The only comment that is given to the images are some wise words by an old Indian 'Sadhu'. He tells what is important in life and what is not and that everyone should respect each other.
The picture of the individual citizen honoring the gods is lifted out of the mass of people doing the same thing, just by keeping the camera on that individual, just a little longer. This gives the documentary an extra dimension. You see the mass in their religious traditions, but you also see the individual doing these things.
A short look at the effect of religion in everyday life. Fascinating!
The Killing Zone (1999)
A brilliant film that´ll kill you smoothly
If you like gangster films, go watch this one! If you don´t like them... go watch this one!
This film is brilliantly slow with unexpected turns which makes it very funny. Time which a movie provides has been used very good and the characters are real. Especially the acting of the main character, Matthew Palmer is brilliant! The coolest person you´ll ever see and will never see again. If all hitmen were like him, you´d better watch it.
Pariah (1998)
Too much violence and completely flattened characters
I saw this movie a while ago, awaiting a good and critical movie. I´m not afraid of a little violence in movies, but in this movie it just made no sense. Random useless violence all the time. There just wasn´t any goal. Maybe the director wanted to bring this feeling to the viewers, but that could have been done in much better ways.
The characters in this movie also have a complete lack of personality. The are flat characters who just commit violent stuff.
A ´not so good´ movie which stands in no comparison to American History X and Romperstomper.
Tussenland (2002)
A great film in which different cultures meet.
This film is a documentary-like movie (first fiction-movie from a documentarist director) about a refugee from Sudan and an old Dutch War veteran (Indonesian independence war). Their lives mix up during the movie and you slowly see a friendship evolve. The emotions of the characters are very well acted and this causes a very good situation to identify with the characters. In one line: a great movie!
