The American (2010)
A different movie with seemingly no real plot
I found this movie rather disappointing considering George Clooney was the star. It is very slow paced and the whole point of the movie was very hard to fathom. It rambles on in its incredibly slow way, with Clooney puttering about almost aimlessly it seemed. I suppose the ending was rather predictable - at least it turned out to be exactly what I expected although the lead character seemed not to get the message.
I suppose the directing was of an attempt to be artistic but for me this was more like making it rather boring due to both the pacing and the seemingly lack of any interesting story.
It will appeal, I suppose, to those who favour supposedly arty films but it is just not for everyone.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
I had hopes for this movie - but sadly Not worth watching
I watched the trailer for this movie and had hopes with what appeared to be a promising plot and a well known actor in the lead. But it started off so slowly that I really started to become irritated that the story could not develop. Watching paint dry would have been more engrossing. It seemed full of irrelevant arty interludes such as cars passing in the street or other totally pointless scenes that would have made the pace of the movie more watchable if they had been cut out in editing.
It was not long before I just started jumping ahead to try to get the story to unfold more quickly - but I finally gave up about half way through the movie. I would say it was one of the slowest and most boring movies I have watched in recent times.
I don't understand the other high ratings for this movie - it must appeal to a very specialized group of movie watchers!
Yesterday (2019)
Once I was a teenager in the 1960's
Perhaps it depends om your age but the 1960's were a decade of incredible change in popular music. This movie brought back to me so many of the feelings I had as a teenager in that decade.
Sure it was almost a dream that the world could have had no Beatles and their impact, but who could not relish the music and a charming romance even if it was fictitious.
I was totally engrossed in the film despite all and would highly recommend it ti anyone who was a British teenager in those transformative year.
Rogue Warfare (2019)
Hokey or what
The start of the film covers a totally disorganized bunch or macho twits who are more concerned about causalities that completing their mission. Couple that with a a sanctimonious drivel script and you can see what this movie offers.
Coroner (2019)
I thought this show was going to be about a coroner
But that is not the main story. This is a story about a failing ex doctor who cannot get her life together and only incidentally does it seems to be about her job. I gave up watching her disaster of a life and will not watch further episodes. Very disappointing show.
The Tunnel: Episode #3.6 (2018)
This had to be the absolute worst Series after Two great ones
It all starts off on the wrong foot with a strangely morose Elise and it only deteriorates from there.
The plot is totally absurd and unbelievable and nothing makes a lot of sense throughout the whole series.
I watched all six episodes and all I can say at the end was I wished I had not wasted my time.
Just plain awful. I would not recommend anyone to watch this unless you want to walk away afterwards both angry and annoyed.
The Girl on the Train (2016)
Unwatchable for me.
I started watching this with some hope it would be a good thriller. After about 20 minutes I gave up.
The characters are just plain nasty, worried about the trivia in their lives it would seem and it was so boring that I just gave up on it.
It is not often I give up on a movie, but I was in grave danger of falling asleep and kept looking around the room for something else to do other than watch it.
I had sympathy for none of them and kept saying to myself, for cripes sake get a grip and get back to living your life instead of drinking constantly, having ridiculous fantasies about someone else' life, and looking at everything so bleakly.
Das letzte Schweigen (2010)
Worse than watching paint dry
This movie was so slow paced that I struggled to stay awake and then finally succumbed to sleep. After waking up and replaying it I fell asleep yet again.
The direction of this movie is also poor with all sorts of arty shots that could well have been edited out. Fat too arty and far to boring as a result.
A murder film needs to be much faster paced with actual developments occurring.
It says on the cover of the DVD that if I liked the Killing that I would love this - nothing could have been further from the truth.
Do not waste your time with this disaster.
X Company (2015)
Totally Unbelievable Plot
If the real resistance was anything like X Company the war would have been lost. Total incompetence is how I would rate them. Sentimentality cannot cause a mission to fail.
I had hoped this would be a faithful depiction of how special agents were trained to infiltrate France - but it is hopelessly flawed with emotions that just cannot be a part of war. In times of war terrible things may have to be done and emotions cannot control actions
I will watch another episode, but if the story is as cloying as this one when it should be about real actions in war, then I will give up on it.
Studio Sex (2012)
Only a fair interpretation of the book.
I find that the various adaptations of the Liza Marklund books, including this one, tend to be oversimplified to allow the film to be placed into a 90 minute time slot.
The result is that the character development is weak, and the plot often simplified over what is depicted in the book.
Of course, all film adaptations suffer from simplification for time reasons, but I find particularly with the Marklund books that this seriously detracts form the original work.
For some reason, while Studio Sex is the first Bengtzon book chronologically (not in published order) by Marklund, it is not the first in the sequence of films, and thus we find Annika already married with two children (she was not in the book), and miss totally the development of her character before she was married and thus understand more clearly why she has some mental instability and is so driven by her career.
Paradiset (2003)
Not a great version from the book
I had read the book before viewing this movie and I found that so much of the plot had been removed in making this movie that it became unintelligible. If I had not read the book I don't think I would have much of an idea what it was all about.
I wouldn't criticise the acting, but because the flow of the movie was uneven, the acting may have unfairly been made to also look choppy.
I think the movie could have been longer to more fully develop the story that Marklund wrote.
I was hoping for a better translation of the book to film - but I would certainly encourage anyone to read the book before watching the movie just so you know what is happening and why.
Flood (2007)
Another Flood Movie
I was struck by the awful acting and script for this movie. All the characters seem rendered immobile by personal issues - rather like deer in headlights. They dither around whining and moaning about their emotions when decisive actions need to be taken. I found myself yelling at the TV screen trying to wake them up to their situation and DO SOMETHING! The plot line is implausible. Every time there is a key decision to be taken by a lead character, one of the other characters has to bring up all the problems with the obvious decision as though to further render the decision more difficult - it is a tried melodramatic ploy and just wants to make you groan. Clearly the import of the decision is obvious - you don't need to treat the audience as idiots. Overall - there is just too much emotional melodrama in the whole movie.
