The House That Jack Built (2018)
We get it...you're artsy.
I'm all for art. I'm all for violence. I am even all for pretention sometimes in films. This film is what some will surely call an art film that most people won't "get." No...I get it...I'm just terribly bored with it. Seriously, deliver a movie...FOR ONCE...not a sermon. If you have to hit me over the head with your artistic statement you have failed. 4 out of 10 only for technical merit but this film is far too dull to be seen as true art. Rethink some things Von Trier.
Evil Things (2009)
Really not a bad found footage entry.
Here's the deal. The biggest reason a lot of people hate round footage is it relies on gimmicks to push the narrative. Horror fans obviously have no issue with every other single horror movie relying on these same tropes. The difference is they most often show you everything. If you can suspect your disbelief and opem your mind found footage can be a fun experience! Such is the case with this film. No, you won't see blood or gore or really even any violence. Everything in this film is done through the art of suggestion, leaving the viewer to do a little imagination work. I actually prefer these kinds of films over seeing a baby lifted from a crib by an unseen entity. Don't show me...scare me. The actors here do a credible job and for the most part they are quite likeable. Once the action really begins to kick in you may find yourself caring about them other than groaning that, of course their cell phones don't work. You may be entertained if you would stop complaining that they are still filming. Just go with it and enjoy it for what it is. Plus homegirl had on a Wicked shirt. That's boss.
Evil Dead (2013)
You Want Gore? You Got It.
This movie is a GREAT addition to the Evil Dead franchise. This one veers from the comedic aspects of the original trilogy and goes straight for the brutal horror instead. I actually apprciated that.
SPOILERS BELOW
My only qualm with the movie is The Abomination itself. I just thought it was a little lackluster. It seemed odd that it was just a girl in the ground. Maybe I missed something.
All in all if you want a CRAZY gory, often twisted masterpiece this one comes pretty darn close.
The Babysitter (2017)
Well that was a pleasant surprise.
This one is a ton of fun. It's wild, gory, hilarious, and filled with amazing tension. The acting is great and doesn't take itself too seriously. A bright, charismatic cast really does set this one apart from a lot of horror stuff out there. Check this one out on Netflix if you can. It's a ridiculously entertaining movie.
The Den (2013)
A pleasant, unnerving surprise
This movie is one I find myself going back to frequently and often recommending. Sure the plot is a little far fetched but the lead actress is quite engaging and the scares are plentiful. In this day in age the Internet can be a very scary place and this movie is proof positive of that. The film itself moves quickly, is often brutal, and full of scares. Check it out!
Identity (2003)
Unique and mind-blowing
GO SEE IT! It's amazing. It's not as much of a gory slashfest as you may be thinking, but does involve some horror elements. If you predict the ending to this movie, I will eat my mousepad. Definitely some convincing performances, particularly by John Cusak and Ray Liotta. I definitely recommend this if you are looking for something completely different and you're in the mood to see about 789 plot twists. Have fun!
Far from Heaven (2002)
Excellent
How dare anyone say that this film is laden with shallow viewpoints and integrity. So what if this film doesn't have a big, splashy, twisting plot. That's what makes it real. It is a beautiful and refreshing piece that has been long forgotten in this age of action, explosions, and who-done-its. I am very happy to see a film where actors don't have to "dig deep" and work from the inside out. They just ACT. It's obvious that the film is beautifully shot, acted, and scored, but one thing I am not seeing amongst the other comments is the obvious dramatic element this film drives toward. It shows us that behind those seemingly perfect households, those well-mannered children and the beautiful all-American home lies unseen beasts who devour our sanity and drive us to the edge of our own mortality. I praise Todd Haynes for writing and making this film. It is truly one of the best cinematic journies of the year.
Pink Flamingos (1972)
God Bless The Man
Oh please....all these people on here talking about how this movie should have been done with taste? You stiffs need to go fly a kite. This movie is an "Exploration in BAD TASTE" Hellooooooo? It's brilliant and may not be for everyone, but at least respect it for what it is and don't knock it. Everyone needs a sh**-eatin' drag queen every once in a while!
