Secretary (2002)
Good to see...
Good to see a mainstream movie showing consensual BDSM in a positive light for once, without references to serial killers or abuse (which have nothing whatever to do with consensual BDSM). Well done to all who made it.
The Four Feathers (2002)
Read a history book before you make a movie...
This film has very little to do with the novel on which it claims to be based. Historically it is highly inaccurate. To take one example of a good many, no British soldier wore a red jacket on active service in 1898. The last time the British Army wore red in action was in 1885 & it was unusual then. The Mahdist ansar became a very nasty type fanatic & killed many, many thousands of their own people. This is much the worst of an often remade story.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
This was a good book but...
This movie is based on a really good book.
Sadly the movie suffers from miscasting & the screenplay is not up to showing us the author of the Novels vision.
A shame, should have been a good film.
'Breaker' Morant (1980)
Not a bad movie
This is a pretty good movie on a rare Anglo-Boer War theme. Set in South Africa towards the end of the War that lasted from 1899-1902 & saw the British finally defeat the Boers. Historically it is not true that Harry Morant was a victim of Kitchener's desire to appease the German's or bring about peace with the Boers. Morant & his unit executed too many prisoners -which they admitted- & were caught. The fact the the Anglo-Boer War got very ugly in its closing stages & that both sides, especially the Boers, did sometimes execute prisoners, could not save them.
Zulu (1964)
One of the best movies ever made...
This is a brilliant movie about a real life event, very well made. In January 1879 130 odd British soldiers -30 of them sick or wounded- are attacked at the Mission station of Rorkes Drift on the Natal colony side of the Buffalo River by an Impi of 4,500 Zulu Warriors. The battle raged for over 12 hours before the Zulu's, who lost well over 500 killed, were forced to withdraw. The defenders lost 19 dead & many more wounded & were awarded eleven Victoria Crosses, still a record for a single action. The movie has a few minor inaccuracies, but, on the whole sticks faithfully to the historical story. A great film.
