Feels like this movie was made in 1951 rather than 1961 - and that's not a compliment

It feels like this movie was made in 1951 rather than 1961 - and that's not a compliment. The tone is outdated for 1961 audiences. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart are horribly miscast in their roles, and every actor in the movie overacts. Yuk.

The town looks nothing like a small town in the west; it looks more like a bunch of fake people wandering around on a movie set.

The only saving grace this movie has is Lee Marvin, who created a real sense of constant, impending danger. A real tornado of mayhem and malice.

I find it hard to comprehend how this movie Liberty Valance and the movie Dr. Strangelove were made only three years apart. The former seems ancient for its time, and the latter quite contemporary in tone and style.

Great performances by the child actors in this film
5 March 2022
So refreshing to have a film that features children quite prominently, but manages to pull authentic, understated performances from all of them. They felt so real that the family totally won me over. For this reason alone I found this film to be an absolute pleasure to watch.

Dumb ending to a dumb movie
13 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Other reviewers here have aptly covered how silly this movie is. I will fast forward to the final scene: an overhead shot of the Fury tank first from close up, and then backing off to about 50 feet up. It's supposed to be profound, but the flaw here is that there are piles of dead Germans conveniently stacked out of the street paths, and this immediately after a battle where hundreds lost their lives.

I'm Thinking of Quitting Watching This Movie
4 December 2020
Maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea, but the protracted and circular natures of the plot were less intriguing than they were annoying. And at 2-hours-plus, my patience wore out halfway though this marathon of a movie - simply knowing it was going to be that long.

Tiresome but mildly entertaining
1 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Movie starts with a half hour of Paul Rudd's character trying but failing to fit in and talk like a bro. Nothing is more painful to watch than a character so desperate for attention. Ugh!

Odd and unfunny
28 April 2019
Seeing that there were several cast members (Saget, Pollack, Rajskub) present whose comedy I have enjoyed in the past, I gave this one a shot. It seems like they were attempting to make this movie to be odd, and they succeeded. Unfortunately, I found nothing to laugh at here. If I had been streaming this, I would have stopped watching even earlier than I had if I took the time to rent the physical disc. So this one disappointed even my most modest hopes to be entertained.
