Loki: 1893 (2023)
Oh man, I just can't with Majors
Sorry, but after two amazing episodes which were super fun, well written, intriguing we have to sit through some insufferable character portrayal with no stakes. Given that we are forced to play cognitive dissonance with the real world issues with Jonathan Majors (which I am very confused and upset by) that performance just doesn't work. Hard to follow, nothing to enjoy about it, feels super outdated and offensive to those with actual stutters (it's no Kings Speech or Fish Called Wanda), but it just felt like a guy acting, didn't believe him as a character and I mean, end of the day, this is what Disney is selling it's integrity for, yikes! Couldn't wait for the episode to end, such a disservice to all the hard work put into this show, and man do I feel bad for all those on set that had to listen to Majors doing this bit over and over again knowing it was NOT landing or entertaining, hard pass.
White House Plumbers (2023)
Here for the history; okay comedy, sad filmmaking
Interested in the story, but the comedy/deliveries are flat/phoney. It seems to want to have a slick Guy Ritchie or Oceans 11 tone, but the filmmaking is not up to the task.
It's just all wide angle lenses, feels cheap most of the time. Disappointed since HBO generally meant higher quality or at least more competent execution. The story is what I am interested in, but the filmmaking is really not great.
I am going to stick with it, but I have little hope that it will improve. Really wish it was more grounded or had a stronger comedic voice with better writing.
The story is fascinating and hope having lower expectations for it will help.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Terribly Unbalanced Filmmaking
The first hour was such a mixed bag of what you would expect from a show telling a based on story set in 1999 Tokyo and low budget production mistakes (jerky camera repositioning, bad lip syncing, hollow feeling sound design) some scenes are really great, but the lack of continuity of style and precision is so jarring. Not sure if there were covid compromises made on crew and post, but damn really takes you out of it, sometimes without you even noticing it fully, something just starts to feel weird about a scene.
Will try episode two, but not the quality of production you'd expect from the modern content on HBO, feels cheap and daytime television at times.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Worth a watch, heavy handed for sure, but quite an experience!
Lots of people going on about the script, but honestly I just enjoyed the filmmaking journey, and don't expect to get much logic or realism out of a film like this; it's a surreal fantasy horror taking a real myth and having some fun with it. Sure none of it was ultra-realistic or moving, but learn to enjoy some entertainment; was no where near shockingly or offensively bad, very watchable and enjoyed much of it, will not likely rewatch, but would recommend it! Reminded me of Alien Isolation in the sound mix!
Lucy in the Sky (2019)
Who says this is a bad film?
Though perhaps I can understand wanting something else from this film, but I wouldn't call it a mess by any means. It was a solid movie based on real events. It is well done and worth a watch for sure.
Greyhound (2020)
Only 9 minutes in
I am going to keep watching, but 9 minutes in and there is already poor vfx, lack luster acting and cinematography in a drama scene. Definitely expected more off the bat.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Weak characters, poor delivery, no heart or plot
Honestly, I've given this a shot and its just distasteful from every angle. I come from Dark Irish/British humour and there's none of it here. Not intelligent, just cheap 'jokes' poor and inconsistent characters, and not very clever references. Waste of HBO and actor's talents.
