Dejavu: Ajian Puter Giling (2015)
Indonesian horror movie with unique story but the ending is terrible
"Dejavu: Ajian Puter Giling" is kinda unique among other Indonesian horror movies where it embraces mystery and psychological horror theme with some twists in the story, however it's quite a shame that the final scene ruins the movie where it devolves into a killer ghost/demon movie, and the ending also feels rushed as there are still few things that are not explained clearly in the movie. It looks like the writer already had a good idea at start but didn't know how to write a good ending for the movie. Nevertheless, I still appreciate the movie and I hope to see more this kind of horror movie in Indonesia.
Sesat: Yang Sudah Pergi Jangan Dipanggil Lagi (2018)
Plain horror movie, nothing spectacular
I don't find the movie to be scary, it's more like a thriller horror movie to me. The premise of the story is about a teenage girl (Amara) who performs a ritual at a haunted well to make a wish to talk with her deceased father, but apparently the well doesn't grant a wish and instead it summons an evil spirit that harms the surrounding people around the girl. The movie has some violent scenes but it doesn't have much scares in it, there are few jump scares in the movie, especially there is one straight face jump scare which is really annoying, this kind of jump scare feels cheap nowadays and shouldn't be used if anyone wants to make a good horror movie. Unfortunately the movie has really nothing to offer besides these things, the story is too simple, some viewers might had predicted how the protagonist would solve the evil spirit problem during the course of movie, and there are few things in the story that doesn't make sense too. I wish there is an interesting twist in the story, but unfortunately there is none. I think the movie could be better if the story goes with pyschological horror direction instead of just about a slasher demon which is already too common, like for example, the protagonist could make a wish for her father to be revived instead and the wish is really granted and her father is really revived where he looks like a normal person at first, however there is something creepy about the father later, and so on. Indonesian horror movie industry needs good scriptwriters if it wants to compete with horror movies from hollywood and south korea.
Takut: Tujuh Hari Bersama Setan (2015)
Jump scares only, no story at all
Only jump scares, there is no real story at all. No villain, no suspense, and some plot holes in the movie. The amount of jump scares is too much which is quite annoying. Since the movie doesn't have good story at all, so it's not surprising that it only relies on the jump scares. The movie is basically about finding the whereabouts of the main character's sister and the mystery surrounding of one character that stays in the haunted villa. But the problem in the story is solved easily at the end which would make you feel you are wasting your time watching the movie. The reveal of some characters at the end isn't suprising at all since the hints have already been given in the middle of story if you pay attention or if you had watched other ghost movies with similar theme you can already guess it easily. It feels like this movie was made for television rather than cinema.
Death Whisper (2019)
Has a big flaw with the predictable character
I haven't seen the original south-korean version, but there is one big issue with this movie, one of main character is too predictable. From beginning I can already guess who this character really is when I watch the character's behaviors, so that made the reveal at the end didn't really surprise me at all. Then after the first and second bullies are killed by the ghost, you can already suspect that the ghost is on the protagonist side which reduces the suspense. And the bullies character isn't really convincing as a very bad character that deserves to be killed, which made me feel sorry for them when they are killed, and even more so after seeing the ending. The ending itself isn't really good and satisfying. Apart from that, the school environment is really cool and there is nice soundtrack at the end.
Kembang Kantil (2018)
Not scary at all
Although it's advertised as a horror movie, the movie isn't scary at all, the ghost and supranatural scenes in the movie are quite mediocre if you had watched better horror movies. And the string-puppet style movie poster is kinda misleading, the viewer might think there is human controlling power involved in the movie while actually there is none at all. There are only apparition, poltergeist, and telekinetic basic stuffs, not something you haven't seen before in other ghost/evil horror movies. The dead scenes are also lame. Another problem is how shallow the story and characters it is. Like in the beginning you can already see that there is something not right with the adopting couple when the wife is shown to like buying Kembang Kantil (magnolia flowers) regularly, so no twist at all. And the ending is quite disappointing, there isn't much struggle or climax, it just ends too easy.
Friday Killer (2011)
Lame action-comedy movie
Friday Killer is a Thai action-comedy movie. The movie tells about a killer (Pae Uzi) who is just released from prison and he quickly finds out that someone wants to kill him so he needs to deal with it to survive. He also learns that he has a daughter who is a cop. It's a shame that the killer and his daughter relationship isn't explored at all, they almost don't interact at all in the movie. For the villain characters, there is nothing special about them, they are comical and get obliterated easily. The movie actions are lame, only consisting of shooting scenes which are cheaply done. Some of the kills aren't even shown on camera and they just cut into showing the dead body. You can tell that this is a low budget movie. There are some comedy scenes in the movie, but I didn't find them funny at all. The story gets more serious near the end and the ending is trying to be dramatic, but with the mentioned problems, the ending feels bland to me. The movie might be better if it abandons the comedy and includes more interactions with the daughter in the story.
Jaga Pocong (2018)
Not scary at all and plot that doesn't make sense
After seeing the twist at the end, you might think what's the point of the Pocong apparitions and supernatural phenomenons in the house that last for almost 1 hour? They aren't necessary at all for the plot twist and the movie doesn't explain what's their purpose at all. In fact the movie could just end in 20 minutes if the same act from the twist is done early to the protagonist just after she arrives at the house. It seems the Pocong and supernatural phenomenons were just put there as a filler to scare the audience. Nonetheless, I didn't find them to be scary at all. The Pocong are not a threat at all, they just stand still and can't attack. There is one scene in the movie that shows a standing still Pocong very clearly that lasts too long (about 30 seconds) and it's doing nothing at all to protagonist. This just shows the audience that the Pocong is nothing more than a standing still ghost puppet. There is also a problem with protagonist that acts illogically, but this seems to be common in horror movie. The plot twist revealed at the end is interesting actually, if the movie story could just focus on that thing from the plot twist without involving Pocong and haunted house stuffs all, the movie could be much better.
