Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Brilliant! Powerful! Top-notch!
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a rare gem of television magic at its best. This is the only show that I have ever seen that breaks through every genre and does it perfectly. When you watch Buffy you get a clever blend of horror, comedy, drama, fantasy, action, and mystery.
I can't fit everything I love about this show on the space provided......
I'll just say that Buffy The Vampire Slayer is an intense, emotional roller-coaster you have to see to believe.
Bottom Line: Watch Buffy...Experience the thrill of this truly remarkable show. 10/10
If I Die Before I Wake (1998)
To-the-point Horror film.
This was one of the most suspenseful direct-to-video thrillers I have seen in quite a while.
The movie starts off with three intruders breaking into a house while the family sleeps and picks up wonderfully from there.
If I Die Before I Wake, was one of those films where the situation could happen to anybody and that's where it's appeal comes from. This movie centers around a teenage girl living in the house and how she deals with whats going on. Her main focus are to of course, get out of the house, keep herself and little sister hidden, and to protect her family who are meanwhile being tortured and beaten.
The movie had a great load of suspense for the first twenty minutes but then winds down as the lead character is forced with split-second decisions. However, the end sequences pick up with intensity leading to a hard-hitting climax.
The acting was especially good with the teenage girl comparable to Marilyn from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
There wasn't much violence or gore so don't rent this looking for a massacre. Do rent this though if you want to be thrilled and at the edge of your seat. 6/10
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
The best Halloween sequel out there!!
Before I wrote this I read the other reviews for this film and was disgusted! How can so many people not like this film? It was much better than the other sequels because it gave a method to Michaels madness. I know, for some people the reason for his killings was a little hard to swallow and that's what ruined it for them. However, I thought the idea of Michael being cursed made sense and only raised my appreciation for the first Halloween.
I give credit to the director for setting such a great mood with this movie. The lighting was the best of any other Halloween film and I loved the work he did with shadow effects. Without a doubt the most stylish of the series it gave Michael a real boogeyman flare and spunk never before conceived.
I have to admit, it's not the easiest Halloween film to follow but after you see it you'll get the basic concept. However, from what I hear there is a rare "producers cut" which supposedly explains everything the released version doesn't.
Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers also had great servings of blood and gore, including some of my favorite deaths of the series. There is an especially spectacular massacre later on in the film which I particularly enjoyed.
Either you'll love this film or you'll hate it, depending on how you conceive Michael to be evil. I seem to be in a minority here, but I loved it.
There were plenty of scares, suspense, blood, and original story line in this film to satisfy me so I give it a 8/10
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
The best Nightmare Sequel!
I'm glad to see the great positive reviews for this exceptionally clever movie. However I am writing this review after reading the negative ones so I can help shine a positive light on the great things about this film.
Freddy's back! And scary ths time! After being tortured by countless second-rate sequels there finally comes a movie that lives up to the original. No longer a comedic act, Krueger is once again the terrifying presence portrayed on A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp play themselves in Wes Cravens New Nightmare. (Freddy and Nancy in the original). It seems they are having a hard time dealing with the success of the films and when both start to receive mysterious phone calls, experience terrifying dreams, and brutal murders occur they know that Freddy is not just a character in the movies. It turns out that Wes Craven (the writer and director of the first one) created the Elm Street movies to restrain an actual evil entity from being released into the world. But because Freddy was finally killed in the sixth film, that evil was set free and now it's preying on the one person from the movies that took away its power. That's right, Heather Langenkamp who humiliated him as Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
With a plot like that, you can't go wrong!
This movie was just as scary, just as creative, and just as intelligent as the original. It stands out as the best sequel and has great horror elements thrown into the mix. There is great acting by Robert Englund and an exceptionally well done performance by Heather Langenkamp. Loads of suspense keep the film moving and a great story line keeps your interest. To top it off, the Freddy is much darker and much more intimidating than the Krueger from the sequels.
I won't give away any more but I will tell you that this film is worth your time. If you loved A Nightmare on Elm Street and want to see that evil come back to Krueger, then watch this film. 8/10
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
This movie belongs in Hell!
**SPOILERS**
This movie was the most ridiculous excuse for a horror movie that I have ever seen!!
Ok, I'll give a tiny, half-ass bit of credit for a mildly clever beginning and a laughable end.
But one question remains....Where was Jason?
After all he is the title character! You should expect that it would go downhill since they kill Jason in the first five minutes of the film. And it DOES! Not only that but the plot breaks all the rules set in the Friday films and it isn't even interesting to follow.
There was a healthy dose of gore, although unnecessary, and one wonders if it was added just to make up for the incredible amount of suck?
The acting (except for Kane Hodder) was terrible and the story line was hilariously stupid. I mean come on, it's just too much of a stretch for a series that just started out and has grown to be a set of clever revenge flicks. Now they expect the viewer to add, change, and erase most of what they have been told?
To p**s the viewer off even more they only have the Jason we know and love in the movie for about ten minutes. The other grueling hour and twenty minutes we get a bunch of average, everyday people possessed by Jason.
If that wasn't bad enough, Jason Goes To Hell was just plain boring. I found myself tempted several times to fast-forward through dull scenes but didn't for simple faith that it would get better. Boy was I wrong!
Let me say two more things. Those giant hands that pulled Jason into Hell were so cheesy I erupted in sympathetic laughter! They looked like giant Muppet hands. Also, what was up with that "magic" dagger and the creature that ran out of Jason's body? LAME....
Bottom line is as a Friday the Thirteenth fan I was extremely disappointed by this movie. I've never have and never will recommend it to anyone! If you are looking for a good "Jason" film watch FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH: PART 3. It was much more scary, suspenseful, and entertaining. On top of that the Jason is GREAT!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A brilliant horror film!
Ok, so the plot is something like this...
A horribly burned man with a dirty hat and striped sweatshirt is terrorizing a group of friends on Elm Street. Only this isn't just any man, he has a glove with knives fastened on for fingers and he's trying to kill them in their sleep. How you ask? By entering their dreams at night and stalking them one by one. It's simple really, whatever happens to them in their dreams happens to them in real life. Scary as hell, huh?
You bet it is! I swear, Wes Craven is a genius. To come up with a concept so simple yet so unbelievably horrific at the same time. Not only is the burned bad guy (Freddy Krueger) gruesome enough to kill just by looking at him, but he's designed a set of knives attached to a glove on his right hand to do the dirty work. As the children of Elm Street start falling victim to Freddy Krueger, one girl must stand up and fight against the evil which claims her friends, or she will be next!
Leading the cast of great actors (including Johnny Depp in his first role) is the beautiful heroine, Nancy ( played by Heather Langenkamp). The curiously terrifying Freddy Krueger is played by the extremely talented Robert Englund (who also stars in the sequels).
There were many things that made this movie great. The acting and lightning were top notch. The death scenes were fantastic and there was enough blood to satisfy any horror fanatic. However, that's only the beginning. This movie isn't like the other stalk and slash films of its day (which by the way, I love and watch constantly), it attacks you in the one place you thought was safe, your bedroom! Picture this..you're falling wearily asleep, head rested on pillow, snuggled under layers of blankets. Sounds good huh? Nope, because the second you fall asleep Freddy will be ready to bring you to your nightmares!
So, where do you run? Where do you hide? Don't worry, you're safe. Just as long as you don't fall asleep!
Don't miss this movie! In fact go out and rent or buy it right now! You won't be disappointed but you might be scared! 10/10
Friday the 13th Part III (1982)
Best in the series!!!
I've seen some pretty good Friday films, but this one stands out as the best in the series.
Basically, it's about a bunch of sinful teenagers who take a summer trip to "Higgins Haven", (located near Crystal Lake) to cut loose. That's basically it, but what else did you expect? However, What sets this movie apart from the others is a steady flow of events and decent suspense. Which is more then I can say for part 2! Another thing this film had that the others didn't was a funny and somewhat likeable cast. Like the first film this group ignores warnings from a homeless old man and decides to go out into the woods anyway. So you know they're in deep trouble.
The acting in this film was good too, with the lead character probably being my favorite of the series. The cast was surprisingly smart yet unbelievably stupid. For example, They know not to go out alone in the dark or split up, they even stress that many times! And what do they do? The exact thing they told eachother not to! I have to admit this was my favorite Jason too. I was extremely pleased with his performance. Also I enjoyed the main characters story of her past with Jason and didn't find myself fast-forwarding through dull scenes. With the exception of some noticable wires during a death scene this film was fun, gruesome, and scary.
**SPOILERS**
The death scenes in this movie were impeccable. Among my favorites were death by pitchfork, electrocution, several innovative machete deaths, a knife plunging from one of the stunningly beautiful character's chest/ breast region, a cheesy yet cringe worthy head crushing and..well they were all great. I especially loved how this main character (played by Dana Kimmel) actually fought back and even hung Jason!
In conclusion, excellent film, beautifully orchestrated death scenes, good (or somewhat good) acting and a great cast, including Jason! 8/10
