Maniac (2018)
Only made it to the end...
...because I would watch Emma Stone read from a telephone book, and, yes, I wish this would have rather been just Emma Stone reading from a phone book.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Job Well Done
I thought they did a very good job of applying the Tom Clancy / Jack Ryan template over (relatively) current events. While I didn't binge-watch these in one sitting, I did enjoy over the Labor Day weekend.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Strong Performances from Some Great Actors, but...
...infantile view of capitalism, business, and careers. When the Anne Hathaway character steps up to meet the demands of a high-profile job, her 20-something friends effectively roll their eyes at her and label her a sellout. When the same character gets promoted over the Emily Blunt character, the moral dilemma is whether or not Ms. Blunt's character's feelings will be hurt. Oh, boo-f'in-hoo. The whole "I'm meaner than the devil" routine I can let slide as comedy; however, if does enforce this (again) infantile-perception that to demand excellence you have to be a meany.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
A Good Summertime Adventure Movie
Like many reviewers I saw the original Star Wars triology as a lad and will love those forever. Unlike many reviewers I didn't leave the theater last night disappointed that Solo didn't recreate the Star Wars magic I experienced as a 12 year old. It was a fun, summertime adventure movie in the same spirit of Rogue One (i.e., sci-fi movie that happens to be in the Star Wars genre but with its own unique plot).
I loved how they created the backstory of Han and Chewy, and Danny Glover rocked it as Lando. Yes, the end got tedious with all the gotcha plot-twists. Fun movie nonetheless.
Wormwood (2017)
The CIA Killed My Father, And All I Got Was This Stickin' T-Shirt
As I wrote out the title of this review, I thought to myself, "Self, you must be a horrible person." Two-thirds of the way in to the first episode and finally about half-way into the second I kept thinking, "The facts are pretty clear here. What else is this documentary about?"
HoneyBee (2016)
Fun, Campy Movie
Stumbled upon this on Amazon and thought it was a fun, campy movie. Both female leads - especially the one who played the daughter - did a good job. The five sons were all cool, though the oldest looked a littttle old for being in high school. I couldn't decide if the non-twin blonde brother was a cutie or a creepy - actually he probably played the roll perfectly.
What I also liked is that I could watch this with my teenager without worrying about covering her eyes (or her trying to cover my eyes). Is this Citizen Kane? No. Is this a fun, scary movie for this time of the year (October)? Sure!
Gangs of New York (2002)
Waste of Three Hours...
...of my life. I will enjoy seeing this movie bomb at the box office. Mr. Scorsese continues to ask us to indulge him in watching a story I couldn't care less about. Was this his New York answer to "Gone With the Wind"? Or is it Leo who can't hold my attention.
In all fairness, his depection of urban life in 1860s was sobering. However, it's a movie and I have no idea how realistic it was, and besides that, if I wanted a documentary about the 1860s I would give Ken Burns a call.
I apologize for not explaining myself better than just to say what a waste of my time and money.
