Defendor (2009)
All in all a refreshing movie
To begin with, I love movies with an abnormal protagonist. True it is sometimes a cheap way to show off an actor's acting skill (they get noticed more easily this way), but rather in my experience the screenplay of this kind usually presents me good character building, which is important to me for a story.
An ordinary guy who thinks he can be a superhero is hardly the most innovative idea in the last few years. The girl who used to be a good girl and now takes crack due to her traumatic teenage memories is just another cliché. Yet this movie succeeds in combining these into a genuine story. Like I put it in the topic, it is refreshing. Somehow the relationship between those two feels real.
The story line is not astonishing, but it has no logical flaws or anything. The flow the story was told is alright despite the usually messy start-from-midway approach. With the story goes on you will get to taste the humour of Defendor, partly due to his minor disorder.
This is not the typical big budget blockbuster where you expect a lot of explosions and stuffs (obviously), but if you like interesting characters and plain but solid story telling, you can put it on your watch list.
Date Night (2010)
Not bad for a comedy.
I have to say this movie turns out to be better than I thought.
The apparently ridiculous plot is actually not that senseless. The everyday regular normal couple faced yet just the same problem many other couples have: they don't really have a life, not even a Date Night. I think this may be how they come up with the idea of this film too, that how wild and crazy can a long awaited night could have been like. Hence the crazy stuffs of the story.
I like it particularly about the scene they met the real couple who took the flash drive. Life unstable and poor can be yet more satisfying than the good old fashioned life style of the Fosters. Shallow as it is, the passion in that couple may shed some light on married people who just looked for mindless jokes in this movie.
But you must not overvalued this movie. It is still the kind of time killing comedy you can expect from Hollywood every season. However, if you are tired of comedy with flawed plot, this may worth your time.
Chloe (2009)
Predictable and unnecessarily exotic
This kind of movies have one sole aim: have a good plot. The plot itself is, at best, alright, if not over used previously by other story tellers. However the way they choose to present it is not skillfully at all. Anyone could have easily guessed what happened half way through.
Good thing is all the three leading actors are awesome. Julianne Moore did a good job. Liam Nesson kept up with his level with such little chance to perform. Amanda Sayfried played this lunatic woman well too. She did make me feel creepy a few times or so.
With no brilliant plot nor any special ways to present it, I do not recommend this to people who love psychotic thrillers.
One Week (2008)
Good to have a movie talking about life in a subtle way
This is the first time I watched this kind of movie. The kind that talks about people dying and how they deal with it.
The thing I like about this movie is that One Week did not try to tell you what exactly it is to be a dying person. It is just a trip. No hardselling of life lectures. And no particular life changing moment happened, which is good. In my view all those events during this trip of Ben's are all possible. So it really gives me a feeling that how a trip to search for something you don't even know would be like.
The mood of this movie is alright. It isn't that heavy. So do try this on if you were reluctant to this type of movies before.
Green Zone (2010)
Worth watching. But not that impressive.
A fairly nice movie. People who are against the Iraq war must have like it. While I believe in international politics there are characters who are villains, like the US official in this movie, I think the whole thing is oversimplified. I mean, it will be more realistic if that US official Poundstone is presented in a more patriotic way. I can accept it better if he had that much of faith in doing those things.
The Harvard graduate actor has proved that he is capable of playing different roles in movies. And plus in my view he has the rare ability to make people just love him. He is the kind of guy to be able to solo in a movie for most scenes. Another actor I can think of that is capable of this will be Will Smith.
