John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
At last a film worth going to the cinema for
Don't get too hung up on the run-time. It's not noticeable. A big bucket of pop-corn will keep your hands occupied.
There' not much of a narrative going on, it it rounds the story off from the previous 3 well.
The fight scenes are just epic. You would think they would have run out of original ideas by now. But no - they still found new ways to off someone.
In fact the entire audience was well into the oo-ing and aah-ing. There were plenty of moments where you just laughed out load. Amazing how when done right it's strangely satisfying to watch someone else get violence done to them by the protagonist.
No Spoiler here - but there were a couple of moments when everyone cheered!
It's brutal, inventive and just lot's of fun. Perfect for a Saturday night at the flicks.
The Elephant Man (1980)
The saddest film I've ever seen, but remarkable
I think I saw this film when I was 12 years old, a couple of years after it was released in the cinema, and I've just seen it for the first time since, 40 years later.
As a kid, I would have watched it for the freak show, remembering the comments made about John Hurts make up and performance.
As a man in his 50s, I'm watching it through tears.
Remarkable film making.
Sentimental? Perhaps. Overly sentimental? I Don't think so.
John Hurt's performance is stunning. The story is tragic, showing the highs and low of human interaction. Were people really capable of such lack of empathy in Victorian times? I don't know, but if the film's depiction of John Merricks life is anything close to accurate then I can't imagine what it would be like to be in his situation.
You must watch this film.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Distinctly Average Film - At least the trailer was good
Except the trailer was free - the film wasn't
The film was just plain boring. The plot was thin, not original. The opening got very 'Meta', which was a big mistake IMO. Not quite breaking the the 4th wall, but close. The problem is that the film couldn't quite shake this off, and as a result your immersion into the matrix universe was halted as the entrance. I suspect this is opposite to the effect intended, and is a result of short cuts in the writing. Bad judgement here.
This film could not rely on the spectacle, as we've seen all the effects many times, so it needed a good story. Unfortunately it didn't get one. What a shame.
It wasn't a bad film, nor, as others have claimed, a woke-fest, It was just dull. Found myself falling asleep half way through. The ending seemed to appear without the full blown crescendo, and then the ending itself ended. My reaction - 'Was that it?'
After Life: Episode #2.6 (2020)
Got to be willing to go with it
But if you do, you'll be rewarded.
How Ricky Gervais hasn't won numerous awards just for his writing I'll never know.
You'll swing from laughing out loud to blubbing.
The Expanse: Nemesis Games (2021)
Must do better next season
The entire season was too slow. Far too much time spent on Niaomi's Arc and her family. This just bored me after the a while. This could have been done in 1 episode, leaving more time for earth politics and the like.
There needs some major improvement in the writing if this is going to get renewed beyond season 6.
Mr. Robot: Hello, Elliot (2019)
Just perfect
I am so pleased it ended this way. Well done Mr Esmail for keeping your nerve.
As other reviews have stated, you have to invest yourself in the entire series to get the full benefit of the ending. But that shouldn't be difficult as the entire series is so good.
The last 15 minutes starts ramping up the emotion, the music at the end - perfect selection. I held it together. And then the last 5 seconds. Bam! Not ashamed to say I blubbed.
This truly was a new high in TV entertainment. Every other programme currently rated at 10 should be re-rated to 9 because there isn't a show that is as good as this one. Mr Robot 10 out of 10 on it's own.
Mr. Robot: 410 Gone (2019)
Don't be so quick to judge
Have you learned nothing? Whilst seemingly very little appeared to happen, you can bet there is a set up for one of the final episodes.
Have a little faith in Sam. He hasn't let us down yet...
Mr. Robot: 407 Proxy Authentication Required (2019)
Just Wow
If this episode doesn't win all the awards, then the awards mean squat..
The Orville (2017)
Need to fire Brannon Braga
When I saw this show advertised for the first time, i was hoping for a comedy take on the traditional episodic sci-fi shows. With this being a Seth McFarland show, maybe even a bit of a p*ss take.
What we have instead is a cross between early days Star Trek TNG & Star Trek Voyager, but with the occasional 'Dick' joke.
All very Meh!
So we end up with the ex-Producer of both ST shows writing some episodes, giving directorial jobs to ex-Star trek actors, and essentially Making Star Trek:Orville.0
My conclusion is that if shows does not want to end up being a middle of the road, dull, unoriginal piece of TV forgetfullness, they have to Fire Brannon Braga and bring in someone with new ideas.
American Gods: Come to Jesus (2017)
Unexpected, Original, Not finished - woo hoo
There will be plenty of reviewers that will say that they were disappointed with the season finale. Not me.
Not everything is explained, but plenty is. Not everything is wrapped up good, plenty still to go at next season.
This has been one of the most enjoyable and original TV shows I have seen in a long time. The way numerous mythologies are weaved together with a common theme (not saying what to avoid spoilers) is genius(ly) simple. It's compelling telly.
If you're looking for a nice chronological beginning middle and end, you might not enjoy the structure of the show - it is far from that. But keep with it because even taking the episodes one by one, they beat the hell out of a lot of other middle of the road TV out there.
Bravo to Amazon for this.
