Netflix - please be making season 2, I need more Gus
12 June 2021
Awhile ago I read an article about the show, prior to it being released, and I thought it sounded kinda interesting... fast forward to now and I'd forgotten all about it, but when I saw the poster I was like oh yeah, I remember I wanted to check that out! I said to myself, I'm just gonna play the first 5 minutes, if it's good I'll come back and watch it later, if it's ehhhhhh then I'll just pass - well I didn't stop it after that first 5 minutes, I watched the first 4 episodes instead. I see the complaints that it's "not like the comics" it's based off of, and if that's important to you then you probably won't enjoy as much as myself and plenty of other people who had no clue there even was a comic. I think the story is original, poignant & heartfelt. The acting is flawless; Gus, Jep & Bear are great on their own and when paired in combination or all together they bring their characters, & their world to life. Gus is the embodiment of innocence, hope, joy... and who couldn't use a little more of that in their life right now! I can't wait to see all the different story lines finally converge in Season 2. If you are looking for closure at the end of Season 1 it's not there - & all I can say is, Netflix better be working on Season 2!

If you like movies with no ending, then this is for you
4 July 2020
Feel like this movie had a lot of potential but they screwed it up at the end. If you want a film with a clear ending you won't get it here so don't bother wasting your time watching or you'll be upset. I "get it" that they leave it open ended so you can decide what you think is the end, but as my college fiction professor would say that's a cop out and a real lazy writer, and I would agree here. There was an alternate end on the special features but it just doesn't fill that void after you've watched the entire movie. It was really ramping up and we were anxious for the end and then nothing, total let down.

Do you know what Eurovision is? If yes, you may enjoy this film
4 July 2020
I read all the reviews before watching, in fact they almost kept me from watching, but I had some free time and I just wanted to watch something fun & stupid and let me brain relax, so I thought why not give it a try, and if it's really that bad I can turn it off... and ya know what, I really liked it! Now I need to point out that I am an American whose lived in Europe (in a Scandinavian country) and I totally get Eurovision, and I appreciate all its quirks, but I can totally see how this would not be a hit with an average American audience where most have never even heard of Eurovision. I think if there was a more concrete explanation of what Eurovision is it may have been better received with more people, but it's like they assumed everyone knows Eurovision and I can assure you a lot of Americans have no clue! That being said, loved the songs and the singing voices and the costumes and the drama of the over the top characters. I even downloaded a couple of songs.

Believe all the hype
4 July 2020
Couldn't get tickets to see on Broadway, wanted to see what all they hype was about... just another fad? What's the big deal? So I wanted to experience it for myself - thank you Disney+ !!! All I can say is believe the hype, it's true! This is a magical, fresh take on the musical. A breath of fresh air. About a quarter into watching my husband came home and I looked at him and said this is special you gotta see this, he said he wasn't interested but sat down to play on his phone, read emails, etc but when I looked up at him several minutes later he was transfixed watching it, so even the most cynical musical hating dude couldn't keep from watching and enjoying it. I feel like this isn't a good review but it's hard to put into worlds the joyful feeling we got while watching. And Groff as King George - loved it!!!

Split Review
4 July 2020
I would give this movie a 3, my husband says it's a 7 - hence the 5 rating. The concept was interesting but there is never any payoff at the end, no clear resolution to the story, which I'm sorry but I need that. At the end it's like wait, WTF is happening? And then credits. I didn't care for the slow pacing either, but my husband loved that aspect. And he didn't care the end was left open ended either... but he does not deny these facts are true, it is slow and there is no definitive end. So, bottom line if you don't care about wasting your time for a slow moving movie with no end then have at it. Honestly I thought he hated it just as much as I until I heard him recommending it to a friend, I think he's just intrigued with how different it was.

Zero Star Rating if I could!
10 January 2019
Had to write a review after I saw the ones giving it a 10/10 - were they getting paid to write those reviews or what?! The story is practically non existent, we were left asking each other lots of questions about what actually went on at the end. What is the story?! I can deal with low budget, cheap looking movies if there's a story you can get behind, or good acting, but not here. So it looks bad, no story continuity, and the 2 mains (Courtney & Cody) were such bad actors. If I could give it zero stars I would... so I guess the one star I gave it is for using Eastern State Penn in Philly as a shooting location, that place is cool. My husband was excited to see the horror cast line up for this film, that's why he bought it the day it canevout, but even he feels it's a total let down. He agrees on the 1/10 rating but states his 1 star goes for the horror legends cast. Save your time and watch something else.

Season 2 Unwatchable
1 November 2018
What happened to the narration? We miss it, that's what made it different and more than a plain old dramatization. Husband only made it halfway through one episode, and he refuses to watch the rest. I committed to 2 episodes but just NOT feeling it. Production value has gone way up, but at what expense? We loved the narration, the history, the animation and the music choices, all which now appear to be gone. Please bring back what fans loved!

Overall Solid Show
4 July 2018
Had zero expectations when we started watching this, and overall liked it. Didn't mind the narrator, but we're into that kinda voiceover thing ala Mysteries at the Museum or Ancient Aliens, so didn't find it off putting like so many other reviewers. Liked the structure of the stories as they mislead before getting to the point. Some stories were just more engaging than others, but we absolutely loved Black Stockings and Unboxed. Loved them so much we've played them for friends at our house and didn't mind rewatching those episodes several times. We already knew the background on some stories so those were less interesting to us, but overall a very well put together show with interesting animations/graphics and solid re-enactments. It's not like your watching a movie, it's more like watching an hour of tv on the History channel... but we like that kinda stuff! We hope the second season has more stories we've never heard of.

Best Purge Yet
4 July 2018
Had a great convo over dinner with friends about ranking Purge movies in order of best to worst, and after seeing this tonight (in a sold out theater) 6 of us agree this is the best one yet, however the 2nd Purge is a very close second. Read rotten tomatoes reviews by "critics" after the movie and sometimes I think they don't get it - this isn't an Oscar contender, don't judge it like that, but give it props where they are due, it did spend time developing characters, the story line was engaging, and the action was on point with enough cringe worthy moments to get that Purge feel... and IF you choose to acknowledge it, it goes to a whole other level as it serves up some social commentary on the current political landscape. As always this movie series gets us talking about the what if's - so, would you Purge?
