Universe (2021)
Please release this in 4k HDR!
This show is a gorgeous cermon on the mesmerising beauty of nature on a cosmic scale that just screams to be seen in the best possible quality.
It is done with so much artistic craft, at times it is hard to fathom. Everything from the jawdropping visuals to the brilliant sound design and music to the thoughtful script and naration by dr. Brian Cox - it is perfect for a late evening zone-out, preferably assisted by some herbal concentration aids.
To not release this in 4K HDR on Bluray is a capital offence, in my opinion!
I hope BBC or whoever is in charge read this and make this happen, because the world needs it!
Dýrið (2021)
<3 Ada <3
Ada was the cutest thing and I was so tense that idiot brother would do something to hurt that little woolly angel.
If anything bad happened to her I would be rioting in the streets!
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Why does it look so cheap?
I have watched all the 4 episodes that came out to date and I will have to drum up some serious willpower to keep it going.
Now ... the show is not terrible, but it ain't great eather. It's not even good, or OK. Its ... bearable.
I give it props for having a diverse cast but 4 episodes in the main actors were given very little of substance to do.
The show is so concerned with going mach 2 through the story and character development is secondary.
The actor playing one of the main characters looks so much like Hayden Christiansen in the Star Wars prequels it aint even funny, and he is not a much better actor, either.
The script and dialog is also not good, but what can you do.
Now lets get to the cardinal sin of this multimillion dollar show produced by one of the most financialy powerful institutions in history, a show shot in a large part on location at what was no doubt a huge expense:
It looks so cheap!
The lighting and the way it is shot makes it feel like you are watching a videogame cutscene, the colours are jacked all the way up and a lot of times the sky is blown out. All of this is clearly an artistic choice, I just do not think it was the right one.
It's kitschy. Thats the best way to describe this.
The Night House (2020)
A WELCOME RARITY IN TODAYS CINEMA
A welcome return to well made mystery cinema, a kind of movie you don't really see anymore, apart from projects from directors like Mike Flannagan and Ari Aster.
Really well made, well directed, superbly acted and mastefully paced this supernatural thriller is what you may have been missing.
Give it a shot.
Wrong Turn (2021)
Matthew Modine's hair is a 10/10.
Were this intended as a advertisement for hair products targeted at middle aged men this could be called a success.
After we were finished watching the missus and I could not decide if this was better or worse then 2019's Black Christmass, so that should tell you all you need to know of the quality of this movie.
The Stand (2020)
Probably the best genre show on TV right now!
I have been a great Stephen King fan since I was in elementary school, though I have not yet read The Stand.
After the first 4 episodes I can confidently say that this show gets the general wibe and atmosphere of a King novel.
I get why people may be put off by the first episode, as it is unconventionally edited and can be a little confusing, but as quickly as the second episode things settle down and the episodes progress much more linearly, with only occasional flash backs that are done much in the style of a show like Lost.
The Stand looks great, the acting is superb, the cast is stellar, the mood is dreary and interesting.
Man ... just watch it, don't be tricked by the unbelievably unfair score here on IMBD, this is a top notch show and might just be right up your alley.
