13 Demons (2016)
Are the positive reviews serious or are they friends of the creators of this mess?
I just caught this movie on Netflix and it's listed as a thriller. That could not be farther from the truth. This thing is so laughably bad that you cannot take one second of it seriously. Every directing decision made was questionable, why were they all so wooden? Why did they stare at the TV as if they were coming to a realization but then say nothing and go back to the game? Why did characters repeat their lines over and over again? I'm not kidding, there was a scene that seemed to go on forever where the characters were just shouting at each other "This is just a game!" and "This is not a game!" over and over.
If you've seen Mazes and Monsters, Skullduggery, or Dark Dungeons (or read the Chick Tract it's based on) you know exactly what this is going to be and you will thus not be able to take any of it seriously. The very idea that a board game could possess you is ridiculous and has been done a hundred times before. If it wasn't something that over scared religious types used to try to discourage people from playing harmless role playing games, the concept might have worked. They tried to insist this was reminiscent of Jumanji but then this movie might have been interesting. This is more like the movies I listed above, especially given the weird 70s/80s roto-scoping effects.
It's ridiculous to treat this concept seriously, at least Dark Dungeons knew what it was and played it for laughs (unlike the Tract, obviously) but this movie actually thinks it's making a serious and compelling thriller.
If you can take this image seriously, then maybe this movie is for you: http://www.starburstmagazine.com/images/feb17/13-demons.jpg
If you laughed at it, then you might be like me and enjoy watching terrible movies to riff on them with friends. Is this a "great concept"? No. Is there "great acting"? Hell no. Is this a "great movie"? Absolutely not. But is it enjoyable? Hell yes. I gave this thing a 3 out of 10 only because I managed to get some really good laughs out of this.
The part where the guy straps a serving tray to his chest had me in stitches, I don't think that's what the director was going for but take what you can get. I was entertained. I'll never watch it again but if you enjoy so bad it's good things and you can make it past the incredibly dull beginning, you might find some good laughs and enjoyment out of this, if only once.
Kazaam (1996)
shaq rules
I believe this movie may be the best movie I've ever seen, it kicks the crap out of other movies like American beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Shaq and this movie 2. Shaq is the best actor ever and the little punk didn't suck that bad. God I hate that kid. Too bad he wasn't a miscarriage. I can't believe the little retard got paid for this. Furthermore I believe that this movie has exemplary acting and I believe the plot was well ahead of it's time and it took my breath away. I would recommend that anyone who dislikes this movie should slap themselves for being such an ignorant dilettante. For all of you who gave this movie bad reviews fore shame.
The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (2003)
Failure.
This movie fails to capture any bit of the mystery and intrigue of the best selling book it was based upon. The acting was bland, the effects unappealing and the story uninteresting. I found myself flipping through the channels I was so bored with it. It's a shame the movie turned out so bad because the book was so wonderfully done that I found myself believing that Ellen Rimbauer actually existed and wrote those words herself. The movie did not capture Ellen's innocence and naiveness when she first entered into John's life nor her gradual descent into insanity. My advice is to pass seeing this and go read the book.
South Park (1997)
A great show
I have just gotten into watching South Park. I in fact used to hate it but when I sat down and actually WATCHED some of the shows I realized how clever it actually is. When you look past the toilet humour, the cursing, even the so called bad animation you get a cleverly written very funny show that challenges the limits of television broadcasting.
This show does not promote intolerance towards anyone (with the exception of Barbara Streisand);) rather it makes fun of the stupidity of people who are intolerant as well as society's over compensation towards these issues.
Some examples of these issues are in the episodes 'Cartman's Silly Hate Crime' where Cartman is sent to jail for throwing a rock at Token because it was considered a hate crime just because Token is black, 'Death Camp of Tolerance' where the children complain to their parents that Mr. Garrison, who is trying to get fired so he can sue the school, is acting too gay and are sent to tolerance camp, 'Chef Goes Nanners' Chef complains that South Park's flag is racist, when the children hold a debate on the issue, they completely miss the point of WHY it is racist and 'Child Abduction is not Funny' where all the parents freak out about child abduction and begin getting suspicious of everybody and eventually suspicious of themselves. There are of course many other very funny episodes
This is a very well written, well thought out show. It is NOT intended for children or people with no sense of humour. I give this show 9 out of 10.
Freaks and Geeks (1999)
NBC should be ashamed for letting this one go.
Not since The Wonder Years have I seen a show that has managed to capture the angst of growing up with such honesty, originality and humour. This show brought the characters to life and actually made you care what happened to them. The actors were great, the scripts were great, it got rave reviews from critics, the only reason this show isn't still on is because NBC never gave it a chance. The people who run the networks should be ashamed to have let such a quality program fall through the cracks. This was an extremely good show that deserved better. If NBC was complaining because no one watched it, they should've tried advertising it more and keeping it in the SAME timeslot instead of shuffling it around and weakening the small fanbase. Had they done those things I have no doubt in my mind that this show would still be on today or at least would have had more than just 16 episodes. I strongly urge the fans of this show or people who are curious about it to go to Amazon.com to vote to have it released on DVD. You will NOT be disappointed.
