Paranormal Activity (2007)
A boring movie full of screams
This movie was highly anticipated. Friends of mine told me about this movie, shot with a 15,000 budget and all handy cam.
I decided to give it a change, but oh boy was I wrong.
The movie starts slow. VERY slow. And every 10 minutes something 'scary' happens. I've read news that people ran out of the theaters when watching this movie. It was supposed to be that scary.
But no, the movie continues, not speeding up, with the guy and the woman arguing all the time, with the woman screaming VERY annoyingly.
So basically the plot is:
guy buys camera to film ghost - girl screams - something happens - girl screams something happens - girl screams - and so on
It's because I was with friends that I finished it. I would have turned it of after the first 15 minutes...
Dossier K. (2009)
A well worth sequel to the highly acclaimed 'De zaak Alzheimer'
Today I went to see Jan Verheyen's new movie.
I already had high expectations of this movie since it's a sequel to the highly acclaimed Flemish movie 'De zaak Alzheimer' (2003).
Again you are presented with top of the line, Hollywood comparable style, music, camera shots and characters.
The story is based on the book of Jef Geeraerts. I did not read the book. I won't go into the story (don't want to spoil anything). But I assure you that you will be on the top of your chair throughout the whole movie.
The music is one of the things that I acclaim the most. There isn't that much background music throughout the movie but the sound supporting the events really adds to the thrill.
For the characters: Again the same team, Vinke, Verstuyft, ... Linda (Hilde De Baerdemaeker, known from LouisLouise) is pushed more to the front in this movie, and she does a very good job.
A must see!
District 9 (2009)
A must see!
This movie gets a 10 out of 10 from me.
Why? The trailers did not show you what was in the real movie. And for me that was good. The trailer presented the movie more as a fight between humans and aliens. This is not the case.
I am not going to go deeper into the story here, since that might spoil the viewer's enjoyment.
The aliens are clearly visible, the graphics are simply astonishing.
The story is VERY powerful and has a clear reference to the apartheid in South Africa. That is what a lot of people seem to miss (it's a very big point in the movie!) I was on the tip of my chair the whole movie, it escalates very nice, it builds up tension, and you can see the protagonist changing.
The fact the actors are not known / well known doesn't make this movie bad. Actually it makes it good. You don't expect anything from the actor so it can only go upwards!
