Hindsight (2008)
Entertaining piece of work
While certainly no Hitchcock masterpiece, this movie is nevertheless an entertaining way to pass some time. The film's cast is solid, from Miranda Bailey as Dina, to the always fantastic Jeffrey Donovan as the suspicious Paul. The premise is relatively simple- a desperate vagrant couple looks to make some quick cash by unloading Dina's baby on a childless rich couple. However, the artistic device used to convey the story is the repeated flashback while Dina reveals the story to a stranger. I personally did not know what to make of her opening up to the stranger like that, but other posts on here seem to have a better grasp on that, so read those if you want a tiny spoiler. Otherwise, the story is your run of the mill thriller. It'll keep you shocked, and even in suspense. One thing that bothered me was the darkness during the film's end points. Was hard to see what was going on! However, you make it out, and the action that unfolds is enjoyable to watch.
Against the Current (2009)
Heartwarming, haunting story of man who swims The Hudson River
This movie has a character who's very relatable, a character who wants to accomplish something great in his life, something he can say he actually "did." This is something many people wish they had the courage to do- to actually "do" something rather than just talking about doing it. It was inspiring to see it in this film. The cinematography is stunning and beautiful. That in of itself is a reason to watch this movie. Everything from the sound of lapping water to large cargo ships passing by all present a fluid and calming picture. I wont go into the storyline here, but suffice it to say it is satisfying and flows smoothly. The movie has bits of dark humor and funny moments, all of which elicited laughs. It's certainly not a comedy however, but these moments provide needed comic relief. Each of the starring actors gave phenomenal performances. Joseph Fiennes is remarkable as the haunted Paul Thompson, and Justin Kirk provides lighthearted relief as his friend, Jeff. Elizabeth Reaser complements the ensemble with more fantastic acting. Overall a great piece, with a strong story and strong cinematography
Lower Learning (2008)
No pressure movie
If you're looking for a fun, no pressure movie that you can just sit back and relax with, this one's for you. Not the most complicated of plots, but certainly has its funny parts and charm. Rob Corddry is a comedic genius in my opinion, and I always enjoy his performances. This movie was no exception. Overall a good time, if you're aware of what you're watching, which is a simple comedic picture. Jason Biggs is his usual charming and good guy self. Many heart warming moments in the movie with him as the vice principal. Eva Longoria makes one of her first film debuts and fairs well. This movie blends a time tested element of comedy, which is juxtaposing small children and adult themes, so it goes without saying this one may not be for the kids. Just watch and try not to think about it too much, and you'll have a good time. The world needs more lighthearted comedies like this
Super (2010)
An ordinary man is pushed to his superhero limit when the love of his life is kidnapped
'Super' was a shocker. While my impression from the synopsis and trailer had me pegging it as a comedy, it was clear that it was a much darker picture. Once I started watching in that context, however, I was able to appreciate it more. Super is dark, and very gory. But there are numerous instances throughout that give it those sparks of comedy and light heartedness. Rainn Wilson shows his amazing acting range in this. If you saw him primarily through the context of 'The Office', you will be pleasantly surprised at the emotion that can come out of him, and on the flip side, come out of you while watching. Ellen Page is enthusiastic, but perhaps a bit too much so. She does keep it from being tame and ordinary however. Kevin Bacon is great as the villain. You want to hate his character, but you end up kind of liking him due to Bacon's ability to turn even the most hatable villain into a hatable yet lovable one. Overall, the story flowed nicely. I understood characters' motivations, especially Wilson's, and it didn't seem forced. The storyline is straightforward, which I like. Overall an entertaining hour and a half
Greenlit (2010)
Indie Film Producer Miranda Bailey examines the issues and problems with keeping a film production "green"
Very funny, original look at a topic that should be at the forefront of the green movement. As one of the largest producers of pollution in the environment, the film and TV industry has an obligation to open the doors to the production process and what effect it has on the environment. 'Greenlit' does just that, allowing the viewer to see the waste that results from a feature film's production (as well as the drama associated with trying to reduce that waste). This isn't the snooze fest that is An Inconvenient Truth. Rather, the problems associated with film production pollution are presented in a humorous yet educational manner. I didn't feel like I was learning something so much as I felt like I was taking in an entertaining movie
