Dead Heist (2007)
Decent urban horror movie
Four small time gangsters go to pull off a bank job in a small town out in the sticks that turns into over the top video game type killing of flesh eating zombies. Video game type movies can get away with bare bones no real story line plots like this. Just look at the previews for Resident Evil: Extinction. It's not like they need to write a story for the movie. All they need to do is figure out places for zombies to get slaughtered.
D.J. Naylor wasn't good or bad. He was just kind of there trying too hard to be Vin Diesel. E-40 only being shown in the movie on a cameo type role stole the whole movie. Been nice to have him as one of the gangsters fighting the flesh eating zombies. Big Daddy Kane was like a plastic man out there on some parts, then got down on other. The action scenes he looked on his game. When he had to explain the flesh eating zombie story to D.J. Naylor it was painful. Two mellow characters on screen don't work. The rest of the actors didn't stand out either way.
The picture was clean. Director Bo Webb did a hell of a good job on calling the shots. The cuts he used to show money, guns, zombie faces, and blood was off the hook. All the time you see one big shot of all the actors like you're outside looking in. In this movie Director Bo Webb brought you in to the movie full on. The camera showed all kinds of detail.
DEAD HEIST was right on the money trying to roll a urban movie into a horror movie. It's been done in other movies put out by bigger studios like Tales from the Hood and Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood. The different thing on this movie was it wasn't preachy or silly. It just wasn't pulled off. Good plan. Poor execution. Check it out to see E-40 and what Director Bo Webb did. Both got more movies in the future.
Black Irish (2007)
Deep movie
I thought for sure that Black Irish was going to be like Southie packed with crime. Turns out this movie goes for a deeper more troubling look at turmoil within in a family. That's what made this one so good. You've got the good brother who is a baseball star who has to live in the shadow of what his no good brother does as a low level street punk. The teenage sister gets knocked up bringing more shame to the family. The father is a tortured man down on his luck with a history of failure. The mother is the bread winner trying to hold the family together. All in all it's not an uplifting movie to watch. It does have heart and great acting. A gem of a movie to see.
In with Thieves (2008)
HOT! killer crime movie
This movie was hot! A flat out killer crime story that pays off big time. Gotta love a gangster movie that pushes things. Let me tick off my list of what brought the heat on this one.
1. Totally original story with the voodoo cartel, albanian mafia, and mixed race thief crew that was both irish and puerto rican. Nice touch on that! 2. Action was cool. I never knew who the next murder victim was going to be.
3. Nudity a HUGE bonus. Can't lie. Female cast was sexy as it gets. Loved seeing it.
4. Acting was great. What a cast.
5. Picture looked beautiful.
I was surprised to get so much from a indy crime movie. No complaints from me. I rented it. Now I just ordered it from Amazon for keeps. In With Thieves was on fire.
Consignment (2007)
Full out gangster movie
I loved this full out gangster movie. It's loaded with action. Story moved quick with no let downs. Consignment had some of the most real characters I've seen in a little bit. I gotta say the striptease in this movie was FANTASTIC. The dance, the grind, the moves were electric. Too many glossy fake movies about drug dealing out there that miss the mark. Consignment landed a bullseye. What I really liked to see was the mixed cast of characters represented. You had Black, White, Latino, Asian, and Native American faces shown. That was hot to see. Another surprise was the soundtrack. I got my DVD off Amazon. Wherever you get it you check it out.
Juarez, Mexico (2005)
Total garbage
This has to be the worst garbage I've seen in a while. The "disappeared" as they are known on the Juarez and El Paso border should have made for a good movie. Director James Cahill who also stars in this car wreck gave up a terrible movie. Zero entertainment value in this one. You got the main character "Johnny Cash" (no BS) who is so unbelievable as a hero it's laughable. Then you have this sex cult out in the Mexican desert that is poorly shown. Nothing of interest in this one. This is a cold turd served on a cheap paper plate. The only saving grace of this movie was that it did have an ending. I feel bad for the people that were involved with this one.
Waist Deep (2006)
So-So gangster movie
Was expecting a whole lot more from Waist Deep. It had Larenz Tate famous for O-Dog in Menace II Society plus hip hop artist the Game. The movie was super soft. Never played real. Can't blame the actors on this one. I made the mistake of watching the bonus footage with the director and producer talking about the movie. They had no idea what made a real gangster movie. Comparing cars to characters was insane. Been better if they paid more attention to what was happening in the movie then worrying about the car a certain character drove. The whole movie was silly. To bad that Larenz Tate and Game had to be involved. This was watching a director who should be doing after school specials putting out a gangster movie. What nailed the 5 for the movie was the actors.
Loaded (2007)
Get Loaded
I really liked this low budget gangster movie set in the O.C. Wasn't like the show on TV. This O.C. had ruthless dope dealers. The movie was entertaining. Would have liked to see a small dose of T & A. I mean if you're going to show hot females as drug groupies at a pool party logic says there will be some nudity. Especially when your in the fast life of dope money. That's the only fake knock on this movie. The rest of of it is good. The acting was great. One part that was insane was when a low level street solider gets beat down then ends up dead with a broom handle where it doesn't belong. Nobody says all criminals die simple. The picture was good as anything big studios put out. Give it a chance.
