Raised the bar for fan films.
3 May 2009
For a fan film, this was amazing. Best home brewed cinema I've seen in a good long while. Hell for most of the movies I've seen lately this was great. The actor portraying Aragorn did a smashing job. He carried the forty minute mini-epic.

The locations were astounding and often times I wondered if they'd filmed at the same locations as Peter Jackson's films. Gollum's voice was perfect and what CGI I saw was implemented usefully and without excess.

A good look into an unexplored part of the Middle Earth mithos. It gave them some room to work with their own originality. Not of the scope of LotR of course but still, very good, worth the admission price of nothing and I will be watching it again, likely very soon. If you liked the Lord of the Rings films, or better yet, read the novels, give this a go. You won't be disappointed.

Cloverfield (2008)

Everything War of the Worlds Should Have Been
20 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. This is one of the best sci-fi films I have ever seen. Easily the best creature film. It was a truly intense, original, and scary experience. This film was a lot like Children of Men. It was fast paced and just didn't let up. It is done in a under utilized (thank god) style that suites it.

This film did something that I haven't seen since Alien, it didn't show the antagonist fully, until the very end of the film. All you see are little bits and pieces. This movie is all about what you don't see rather than what you do. The effects were top notch and the whole film just left me feeling drained.

This is what I was looking for when I saw the oh-so disappointing War of the Worlds. Cloverfield is much more human and in depth. War of the Worlds is for the "I need closure and happy endings like oxygen" crowd. Cloverfield is for the "I like original, daring, and revolutionary movies" crowd.

To describe it in terms of other films it's: War of the Worlds (But better)meets Children of Men meets The Blair Witch Project.
