Mad Max (1979)
Brilliant
In the UK we have never had the problem of the overdubbed version, but I recently saw it on TCM with the dubbed voices and it was awful. The Toecutter's accent and lines are completely lost in the overdub. Acting-wise, Gibson is good, but the supporting cast really make the film, particularly Steve Bisley and Hugh Keays-Byrne. This film is a lot more complex than it looks at first and is way ahead of the two sequels that just play for action. There is so much wit in this film it is hard to know where to start, but it is the most quotable film I know. On a hardware note, the Interceptor is THE car (even if the supercharger was a fake!).
When Eight Bells Toll (1971)
Good yarn
I love this film, because I think it is pretty true to McClean's book and Calvert is suitably downmarket to be a more believable agent than James Bond ever could be. The scenery is fantastic and the diving scenes are good too. I also have to say that I love the theme music and wish I could get it on CD!
