The Empire Files: Gaza Fights for Freedom (2019)
I wish I had seen this years ago
A friend recommended I watch this today and I'm glad I did. I had seen Abby Martin interviewed and appreciated how articulate and fact based she was. I wasn't aware of her work with The Empire Files. Now I want to watch more, learn more. The connection between the atrocities and the laws is done so clearly, the visuals are shocking but not gratuitous. I had heard and read of the March of Return but watching this I realized how little I knew. The pictures, videos, and the interviews focus on the facts, relating the context rather than focusing on the emotional content. Everyone should watch this.

Powerful story
As I watched the movie, I kept thinking about power and powerlessness. The strength of the characters was palpable while the situations they found themselves seemed impossible. The acting was well done and never felt exaggerated. The bonds formed were believable and heartbreaking. I watched the movie with a group interested in learning more about the Palestinian experience and discussed the ways in which women are especially vulnerable in this context. It is an important watch and a story that is not commonly told. Again and again I am struck by how powerful and determined Palestinian women are.

Powerful and important
Everybody needs to watch this. If you don't know anything about the situation in Palestine, this short movie gives an insight into one day, one interaction, and one family. The challenges are many and the people are so relatable. The emotions are multilayered, palpable and clearly portrayed. I felt myself trying to understand the motivations of each character. I wish it weren't such a true story. The tension was built up throughout and I was scared for and cheering on the main characters. It brought me to tears. I will recommend it to others and I'm certain it will stay with me for a long time.
