A Million Miles (2001)
Excellent, excellent independent film
This was the first movie I saw at my first film festival, and it cemented my desire to be a director. Bryan Sipe (the director) was incredibly cool and even handed out soundtracks to the movie afterwards. Some of the songs were done by the main actor who is a fabulous actor/ writer/ musician.
I don't know why Sipe chose not to act in the film, though, he's incredibly hot! Ok, about the movie, fantastic characters and setting. Movie is set on the Jersey shore. The director said he met with Kevin Smith (the well-known Jersey native) when he was having trouble in pre-production. Ray Jarrell was fantastic as Ford! I hope to see him go on to big things. This is a movie for true film fans, it will make you laugh and cry (I almost guarantee). If you get the chance to see this movie, seize it!
Mission (2001)
Excellent movie...great characters.
I was at a film festival and heard Loren Marsh talking about this movie as part of a panel before I actually saw it. He said that he went to Europe in order to write without distraction and ended up writing about Mission, a neighborhood in San Francisco. This was an excellent movie full of real characters played very well by the actors. I was sort of skeptical about Joshua Leonard's acting ability, since the only other thing I had seen him in was "The Blair Witch", but he was great. From the first time you see him with his hand in a toilet while flushing. This was my favorite film from the festival. I hope it gets a wide release.
If you have seen this and liked it check out another festival movie "A Million Miles."
Murder by Numbers (2002)
1 small complaint and a possible *SPOILER*
I agree with most of the comments about this movie (too much of Sandra's character, etc.). I think that Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt did fantastic jobs (as usual) and should've been the focus here. I mean, how many [cute] young actors are there who are also GOOD ACTORS? Not enough.
My next comment may contain a spoiler (may reveal the ending of the movie) so don't read it if you don't want to know!! This movie is the latest remake of the Loepold-Loeb murder case (was previously made as "Rope" and "Swoon"). Therefore, it is understandable that they got caught in the end. But, since so many other "artistic liberties" were taken here, I thought, just let them get away with it! It sort of p***ed me off. They planned it so well and so many slobs get away with murder every day, why not let these two clever ones get off?
I mean Cassie's (Bullock's name in the movie) intuition was just a little too far-fetched. "He was dumb enough to use somebody else's boots but smart enough to steal them in advance?" is what she asks. Chris's character could have stolen them to, hello, WEAR them and then, hello, WORE them three weeks later, not thinking about it. But whatever. I thought under the circumstances, trying to make it somewhat factually accurate they did a hell of a lot better job than most thrillers, hell most movies, these days of being smart and entertaining. If you liked Ryan Gosling and don't have Showtime, then go see his movie, "The Believer" when it comes out to theatres. It was awesome! And judging from it, he will be an excellent actor and have many deserved opportunities for years to come, if he so chooses (a la Edward Norton.)
