Ghost Stories: Walking with the Dead (2007)
Equal parts entertaining
Ghost Stories: Walking with the Dead makes for a fun Halloween celebration or anytime walk down Indiana's memory lane. Exploring the past and paranormal occurrences associated with some of Indiana's historical landmarks, this documentary is equal parts chilling, touching, and nostalgic. One moment it makes you yearn for days gone by and the next it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. With intimate looks at structures tucked away in Indiana neighborhoods and small towns and personal interviews with the individuals who inhabit (or "haunt" so to speak) these buildings, Ghost Stories: Walking with the Dead provides a unique perspective on a state that offers far more than meets the eye or can be seen in the light of day.
Central State (2006)
An inspired piece of film-making
A well-rounded documentary, Central State balances historical footage of this Indiana insane asylum with firsthand accounts by individuals who were employees and/or patients there. It also takes a compelling look at some of the Central State ghost stories that persist long after the closing of the institution in 1992. Add to this the camera techniques the director used to create unusual angles and perspectives and some spine-tingling EVPs, and you've got an up-close tour of the grounds past and present with a high creep factor tossed in for good measure. This is different in a good way than other documentary-style programs with a paranormal bent. Bravo!
