Gone with the Wind (1939)
Greatest of all time
If I met someone who would only be able to see one movie in their lifetime - this would be the movie I'd send them to. It created the art form as we know it with unbelievable performances, direction, and the most memorable score in film history.
Epic in scope, vision and heart - a must see for anyone who cares about film.
Road to Perdition (2002)
A Little Overblown?
OK - it's a good movie. It is NOT The Godfather and don't you think all the hype is just a little overblown? The cinematography is a bit "WE ARE DOING GREAT FILM HERE PEOPLE."
Excellent performances by Newman and Hanks. Young boy talented as well. My major gripe is with Sam Mendes. For a theater person, he should know how to tell the story better. Too much emphasis on impressing us - not enough on the craft of storytelling.
Fundamentals. Work on the fundamentals.
World Traveler (2001)
Should be seen
This film, while far from perfect, is one very much worth seeing. It has stuck with me for two weeks - and so that alone should count for something. A strong performance by Billy Crudup and the movie's gradual (and somewhat slow) evolution is actually part of what makes the movie appealing. Makes you wonder about human interaction and the impact we have on one another. Both the profound nature of that interaction - and the apparent random nature of same interaction is explored. Should be seen.
