Sorry I have to disagree with those that "couldn't stand" watching this Episode.
IMO it was a wonderful storyline, gave the cast a chance to show what capable actors they are, and if the "haters" would look back at TOS,, had episodes ,that yeah, were based in Fantasy or even comedic. Think "The Trouble with Tribbles", or the ongoing "run-ins" with the "Pirate" Mudd.
I thought the resolution of Dr. M'Benga's daughter's illness was a well thought out opportunity for future development of this Series' narrative. Gosh, doesn't anyone remember the repeated appearances/reincarnations of "Q"?
I would invite those "naysayers" to re-watch similar themed episodes contained within all the Star Trek genre and then perhaps sit back and enjoy this ride.
