Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Game of Masks (2018)
Nothing Short of Incredible
The best episode of Ninjago without competition. Everything about this episode is peak, and deserves all the praise I can give. Everything comes crash down in an epic encounter between Lloyd and the season's "big bad", but not in the way one might expect. Although the reveal of the Quiet One's identity may have been obvious, the execution of that reveal in-universe is mind blowing and expertly done. The backstory given to the villain in the first minute of the episode only adds more fuel to an already enormous fire of emotions, storytelling, and grief all bottled up into 20 minutes of pure perfection. The fight choreography is seriously insane for plastic Lego characters, and the dialogue in the mentioned battle is some of the most well-written work I've ever seen in all of television. What's more, is this episode references some moments from Ninjago all the way back from SEASON 1. The continuity is carefully maintained, and the lore is forever changed by revelations we did not pick up on in the very begins of the show, only to be brought to light in intricacy crafted call-backs 8 seasons in. This is as dark as it gets for a "kid's show". Ninjago already deserves more love, but this masterpiece of an episode is absolute GOLD. It doesn't get much better than this.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: The Perfect Pear (2017)
The PERFECT Pear
Probably the best episode of the entire show, and that's really saying something considering how late in the series this one was! We finally learn about Apple Jack's parents, and their Romeo and Juliet style love story is heartbreaking yet beautifully executed. I've watched this episode several times now, and each viewing causes me to fall in love with it even more. Needlessly to say, I can never make it though without crying, and I know few who can. The story revolves around Apple Jack, Apple Bloom, and Big Mac talking to different ponies in town and learning the truth about their parents' past. It is heavily implied (if not confirmed) that they are dead, and that revelation is devastating, but done in a perfectly written way to discuss the topic with younger kids. Older viewers will appreciate the tragedy even more, and the deeper themes intertwined behind colorful ponies. Growing up with the show, and with that extension Apple Jack herself, we are taken on a truly emotional journey that pulls us right into the story and characters' head-spaces. We get such a lovely song in the middle as well, and the conclusion to this episode is so so good, honestly the best way they could have ended it. There's nothing bad about this episode, and I am honestly in shock that the creators were able to approach the long-awaited tale of the Apples in such a satisfying and breathtaking way! Only the highest praise for this one.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Secret Box/Band Geeks (2001)
Greatest Episode of Television, Period
The title says it all. "The Secret Box" is swell, but "Band Geeks" is on an entire other level of greatness. Every second of this mere 10 minute episode is used to unmatched perfection. Not a moment is wasted. The comedy is HILARIOUS, and I cannot stop laughing every viewing, despite hearing the same jokes several times before. Every beat hits, from the iconic "is mayonnaise an instrument?" to the show-stopping final performance. You all that one character who's always the butt of the joke? Well, this time, HE gets a win. A massive win, a well deserved win that has my heart BURSTING with pure joy. The ending of this episode could have gone a number of different ways, but the way they chose to conclude this comedic masterpiece amps the whole thing up to an 11. You will know how great it is when you watch it. Even if you know nothing about Spongebob, this episode is enjoyable, but die-hard fans know just how incredible it truly is. This one's for the history books, and I conclude that it will gone done in time as a staple of cinema.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
An Endlessly Rewatchable Masterpiece
Undoubtedly the greatest film ever made, but we all knew that already. There is quite literally next to nothing bad to say about this absolute masterpiece (yes I've read the books). If you look up "masterpiece" in the dictionary, this movie should be the definition. Where do I even begin to describe such an international treasure? Of course it's Aragorn, whom Viggo Mortensen plays to complete perfection. An ideal man that EVERYONE should strive to emulate; he's just that good. The SOUNDTRACK, wow, talk about phenomenal. "A Far Green Country" by Howard Shore is a certified tear-jerker (you know the moment I'm talking about), and nothing can get more iconic than "Concerning Hobbits". Each musical score is played at the extra correct second to transform already perfect scenes into alternate levels of greatness. The cinematography is unparalleled, from the Battle of Pelennor Fields, Mordor, to simply a close-up of one of our hero's faces. Speaking of heroes, Elijah Wood absolutely SHINES are Frodo, alongside the man we all know and love, Sean Astin as Samwise the Strong himself. By the end of the movie, I feel as if I went on this incredible journey alongside our main characters. I feel exhausted yet relieved, overwhelmed in the best possible way, emotional but satisfied, and honestly come out of it wanting to be a better person. Return of the King speaks to the purest forms of humanity, and inspires us to be better, and that there is still good in a world full of darkness ("and it's worth fighting for"). This film is one of the first movies I remember watching (my parents being massive nerds themselves), and I grew up in love with the series ever since. I watch RotK at LEAST two times a year, and I guarantee I will do the same for the rest of my life, because this movie is one of the best parts of my life. If you're reading this review, then go rewatch Lord of the Rings, cause I know this ain't your first time here.
