The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Damn this movie rocks!
I went to see this at the theatre in town last night, and I must say it's more than I expected it to be. I wasn't old enough to see the original phantom, Michael Crawford, or Chrisine, Sarah Brightman, on stage, but all I've known are the original recordings of that show. I went to see the movie, and I realized from the start that I can't expect Gerard and Emmy to be as good as Michael and Sarah. It's nearly impossible... Overall, the movie looked very nice, and it was very well done, with one exception. Emmy and Gerard needed a different vocal director. The way they pronounced some of the words caught me off guard. There were a few times I wasn't sure how that way of pronouncing actually made the final cut. That was only a very minor pestilence. I hardly noticed, except for a couple of spots in Music of the Night, and one of Christine's songs, not sure which one. Back to the important elements. I was practically tearing up the last half hour or more of the show. It wasn't like straight out bawling, more like tears forming and maybe only one falling. But seeing Erik sitting there, mask off, holding the little music box that plays "Masquerade", and he's singing along, but he can barely sing because he's crying... that put me over the edge, and if I'd needed any more coaxing, I would have flooded the place out. My shirt sleeves were soaked I cried so hard... This is a damn good movie, and even though Gerard and Emmy aren't as good as Michael and Sarah, they at least plunked a few notes on the organ of talent... ^_^
Howards End (1992)
SPOILER ALERT- The most awful movie in history...
I was forced to watch this movie in my Senior Comp class, and I must say that this was the most boring hour and a half of my life...
Personally, I didn't think the storyline and plot of 'Howard's End' were anything to be excited about at all. I found the movie to be dull, dry, and extremely uninteresting. I couldn't recognize a significant plot, or a significant meaning. I did, however, find a very limited amount of notable traits in the technical elements of the film. The costuming stayed very true to the time period it was set in, and the sets built for the movie were flawless.
The actors and actresses, I felt, were too talented for a film such as this. It didn't fit what these performers are capable of. The lighting was very well done in this film. In one scene, it's dark outside, giving a feeling of loneliness or desolation. The camera then shows a window, where people are eating inside. The bright, warm colors of light through the window contrasts with the cooler hues of the outdoors at night. This scene was very well done. As for a few other scenes that caught my attention, nothing in this film was worth remembering. One thing I don't understand is how this movie could possibly be called a classic. A classic failure maybe, but not a great standard to which movies made since should look up to. That is what a classic is. Everyone looks up to a classic, and wishes they held the ownership to the groundbreaking film. This did not meet any of my standards for a great film and it should have never been released.
The Gate to the Mind's Eye (1994)
Awesome movie, but no-one knows about it.
When I looked and saw that this movie had only been rated by 49 people, I was surprised. I mean, the music is genius, the animation was way ahead of its time, and only 49 people in the universe care enough about it to review?
Man, are the people of the world missing out. Thomas Dolby is a musical genius, and the people who did the animation spent loads of hours on their pieces. I think this movie deserves more than what it is getting.
I first remember seeing it when I was in third grade. My mother was the head librarian at that public library, and I was nuts about the 1st mind's eye. She finally just bought that one and this one for me so I'd quit checking them out... o_Ox This is definitely worth your time.
My Little Pony Tales (1992)
I may be the only person here who LIKES this version.
Okay, face it. Most of us got hooked on the ORIGINAL version of My Little Pony. Which, hey, I was one of them. But, since I have known this show almost as long, I still love it. Whoever it was who said "What ponies go to the mall?" I have a few words for you. First of all, cartoons sometimes evolve and change form, to keep some younger kids' interest. Yes, I love the original, but it could get boring going on quest after quest and running around in caves, caverns, etc, you name it. To make the ponies go to school and the mall puts a personal touch on the series, and makes it have situations that kids can relate to. Such as the episode where Melody was a total Primma Donna and trying to take all the credit in the school play. It teaches kids to share the limelight, and other things, but it also puts an element that kids can better relate to. Yes, sure, there are elements of the original that kids can relate to, but putting a modern spin on the show keeps it popular. Anyway, the rant aside, I adore this series.
Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)
Funny as HELL
When my mom brought this movie home from the library, I was reluctant to watch it. I thought it would just be another animation/live action mix flop. It wasn't. This movie is hilarious beyond words. The animation for the characters is very nice. It's come a long way since the Saturday morning cartoons. The effects were also very nice. It would be easy to forget that the characters were added in; the coordination was also very nice. My favorite scene is when Bugs and Daffy jump into different paintings at the Louve (I can't spell). The animation for that was superb also. All in all, this is a very good movie. It was well done.
The Flight of Dragons (1982)
A Lasting Part of my childhood
The Flight of Dragons. To this day, I still get excited when I hear that title. I remember when I was first introduced to this exceptional cinema work. I wasn't more than 7 or so. For the first time, my family had the pleasure of having cable. It was one of those ancient cable boxes (I'm 17 now, if that clues you in on anything), but it was cable. I was watching the Disney Channel, and my mother was taping The Flight of Dragons. I liked it, but as with many other obsessions of mine, I didn't grow to love this movie until years later. I don't know what it is about this movie that keeps me coming back, time and time again. Is it the storyline? A man, with "one foot in the realm of magic, the other in the realm of science". It must have enthralled me, in some way. Dragons, warriors, mythical battles? There's nothing to turn me off there.
The characters. The plot. I can't put a finger on what turns me on to this movie. However, I believe this is a timeless classic that I will most certainly be showing my kids one day. I hope they will get as much out of it as I did.
SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
Greatest American Cartoon Ever
I got hooked on this cartoon last year, and have found myself quoting it constantly. I find it uncanny how well my 6th grade brother and I can quote Spongebob scenes. This cartoon has made Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob) one of my favorites. The shows are well written, and I think each character has the ideal voice actor/actress. The only complain I have is the lack of female characters. There's only Sandy and Mrs. Puff. Other than that, I love this show and will keep watching it as long as it stays on the air.
Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy (2002)
^_^
I haven't seen many eppies of this wonderfully humorous cartoon series. I can safely say that I would be a better fighter than Kid Muscle. He's such a scaredy cat! But, without a scaredy main character, this show would lose some of its humor. Here I am to blab about my fave voice actor again-Darren Dunstan. He does a couple of voices on this. So does Eric Stuart, the voice of Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh), Brock and James (pokemon). Keep going, but try to keep Kid Muscle out of trouble. ^_~
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003)
COWABUNGA DUDE
I have loved Ninja Turtles ever since I can remember. I had the toys and watched the tv show. Then, well, I don't know, I kinda forgot about it. I was thrilled when I heard it was going to be on again. Michaelangelo was always my favorite. And, of course, my favorite voice actor EVER, Darren Dunstan, does the voice of Splinter. I later found out he did the voice of Splinter in the video Cartoon All Stars.
Cowabunga
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
GRRRRREAT!!!
I love this movie. The animation and music are superb. I can sort of relate to Chihiro in the sense that I had to move a couple of times, and I can say I wasn't too thrilled about it. I think Ubaba is mean, but without her we'd have no movie. Chihiro is a very likeable character. I think Haku is adorable. What's even more adorable is that he and Chihiro kind of "like" each other. Thanx everyone!
Majo no takkyûbin (1989)
Great Film for all ages
I don't know when I first saw this movie, maybe when I was in fifth or sixth grade. I recently checked it out from our city's library. Of course, it helped that I am die hard Anime fan, but I felt like seeing a movie a little different than kids my age watch. I love the story that Kiki had to leave home and develop her witch powers. Tombo is adorable, and I like how Kiki formed a friendship with him. I wish there was a sequel or something. Thanx to everyone who helped out with this great film.
Yu-Gi-Oh! (2000)
GREAT
I love this anime.I instantly fell in love with Yugi and his cause.
But, before you go off ranting that Maximillion Pegasus is evil, I've got some news for you. He isn't evil.
Okay, so stealing Yugi's Grandpa and making Yugi win a tourney to get him back isn't exactly right, but deep down, Pegasus isn't a bad guy.
Max met his wife Cecelia at one of his father's fancy parties. He and Cecelia were only children. They spent every waking moment together after that night. Then he asked for her hand in marriage, and she accepted. But not soon after she was struck down with a terrible disease and died.
He was heartbroken, and her death made him kind of bitter. He searched the world to try and find a way to bring her back. He finally came to Egypt, and before long, had his Millennium Eye.
I won't waste more of your time with this lengthy review, but any fan should know why Max wanted Kaiba Corp.
My infatuation with Pegasus aside, this is a great anime for all ages. My brother and I even play the card game, Duel Monsters.
Now go and watch it.
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
AWESOME
I am not a die hard Cowboy Bebop fan, for the simple fact that I've only seen a handful of episodes. Nevertheless, I love this Anime. It's on Adult Swim on cartoon network, so I have to tape it (god forbid my parents let me stay up until 12:30 midnight). I especially love that little kid with the dog, Ein. The guys of the series aren't too shabby looking either. ^_~ (I'm not talking about the dog). I don't recommend this for the younger viewers out there, for the simple fact that it's got scantily clad women, smoking, and guns in it. Still, I love this show. I will each and every one of you out there to watch it.
X2 (2003)
Great plot, better storyline, even sexier guys
Of course, being a fan of the first X-men movie I was DYING to see this one. Wolverine stayed gorgeous, and I had my eyes set on Nightcrawler. My mom thinks I'm crazy for thinking a guy with blue skin is hot, but I don't. I LOVE NIGHTCRAWLER. Thank u Alan Cumming!
Rurôni Kenshin - Meiji kenkaku romantan (1996)
AWESOME!!
At first, I wasn't really drawn to a tv show that I hadn't heard of. It used to be on cartoon network, in Toonami. I decided to watch it one day, and after only four minutes, I was hooked. At first I found it kind of boring that it was set in the time period it is, but soon after I started watching that fact didn't bother me anymore. I love the story behind it. The characters Kouru, Yahiko, Sano, and of course, Kenshin. I loved how Kenshin had been a fighting samurai but didn't want any part of it anymore. And I've got a word to Auryn-4, who reviewed this earlier. If you think some of the Rurouni Kenshin series is boring you probably aren't a true Anime fan.
Yu yu hakusho (1992)
the best show I've ever seen
I started watching this on Cartoon Network last week when they started showing it at 5:00 PM central time, 6 for most of you. I was instantly hooked. Yusuke had a kick @$$ attitude that I really related to (not that I am that way, but I still relate). And I love the fact that a "toddler" can rule the spirit world. Boton is really funny. Seems too perky to be the grim reaper, but it's their world, not mine. Great show. I recommend it to all of you.
Daredevil (2003)
Great movie, but kinda scary 0_0
Gr8 movie! Of course, Ben was gorgeous as usual, and Jenny kicked @$$. I loved the movie. But I didn't know that DD was blind (my bro's comic book calendar filled me in). There were a few gory scenes (Elektra getting that little dagger thing thrown into her hand, etc. I cried when Elektra died, it was sooooooo sad. I hope DD kicks Kingpin's @$$. Gr8 reviews for this movie. Its rated PG-13(rightfully so). I encourage you all to see this movie!
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
great movie, but kind of lengthy
I loved this movie! Smeagle was soooooooooooooooooo cute! I liked how he was schizophrenic. One second he'd be all nice, and the next he'd be like "Must get precious, must kill!!!!!!!" Funny. All the guys were hot, as usual (especially Legolas, ^_^ the best looking elf this side of the Mississippi). Nothing but great reviews for this movie. It was a little long, but for LOTR I can handle it (especially on the silver screen)
Chicago (2002)
disturbing, but good nevertheless ^_^
Gr8 movie! Although I did find the womens' lack of clothing disturbing
-_-* The songs are fantastic, but I think Roxie is a little psychotic - she imagines almost all of the numbers sang in the film. So what? There are alot weirder movies out there, trust me ^_~ I recommend this movie to everyone (I'll put the age limit at around 12, even tho the feature is rated PG-13). Let me put it this way- if a kid is mature and knows right from wrong, they can watch this movie. B/c if they are easily influenced, they could try to be like this! We don't need that happening! *embarassed grin* Anyway, gr8 film, gr8 plot! Thanx to everyone who worked on it! I owe you one!
X-Men (2000)
Hey, who doesn't like it?
My brother saw this film for the first time when I was staying with
my cousin, so unfortunatly, I didn't see it in the theater. When I got
back he ranted and raved about how good it was. I was a skeptic
(until I was the movie). When it came out on video earlier then my
bro had expected it, we made our parents buy it. Was I ever
hooked. First of all, what girl wouldn't be drooling over Wolverine in
that fight scene, and all the other stuff, I was just soooooo
surprised. I am a huge sci-fi fan, so that hooked me as well. I
understand that the movie is different from the show or the comics,
but I didn't really get into the show or comics until after I saw the
movie, so it didn't really matter. I recommend this to any person
who loves sci-fi or Xmen, or somebody with a prejudice. Maybe it
could open their mind. Rock On Xmen.
Spider-Man (2002)
=)
This movie was awesome. I came into the theater expecting an o.k. film, but it was much more than that. Now any die-hard comic book fan knows about Peter Parker and all his foes and adversaries, but I had no idea, save for what my comic-obsessed bro told me (which wasn't much). I sat in the theater and was immersed in that movie. It was like I wasn't even in the theater (it helped that we were in the front seat). Wow. I will definately be watching out for the sequel (and there hasta be one)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
=^0
A great movie. I hadn't even read the book. Even though it was a little lengthy for me, I really enjoyed the movie. I don't think if I had read the book it would have made sense, because in the book I have a hard time visualizing scenes. But now that I have seen the movie, the books make more sense. I can't wait for a sequel to come out.
Labyrinth (1986)
The best d@mn movie ever made!
I loved this movie. I first saw Labyrinth in 2001. It wasn't until the second time I saw the movie I became obsessed with it. I have printed off Labyrinth sheet music from the wonderful site Jareth's music hall, I have lyrics to all the songs that have them, the list could go on and on. This movie really made an impact on my life. The fact that I am obsessed with muppets helped out.
Besides, some great voices are featured in the film, such as Kevin Clash, Brian Henson, Danny John-Jules, and others. Jim Henson's muppets definately helped the film out. It had dramatic scenes, but the goblins provided lots of comic relief. Hoggle was a great character. Thanx to David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly for agreeing to do this movie. W/o you, this movie would have been impossible. David did a marvelous job as the goblin king, Jennifer as Sarah. Thank you, all of you.
