The Lady Takes a Sailor (1949)
A cute movie
This is a very cute classic movie. A woman meets a guy in a very unusual circumstance, however her professional career is on the rocks soon afterwards! I noticed that William Frawley aka Fred Mertz from the "I love Lucy" show makes a quick appearance here. Anyways I would reccomend it for anyone who's into classic movies.
The Sweetest Thing (2002)
A sweet comedy
I saw this movie on its opening weekend and its a very sweet comedy. I'd recommend this for a girls night out, it knows when to mix the hilarious humour with sweet moments.
Guys have many gross out comedies, well finally their letting girls have one, because really this is how girls are. There are plenty of girls like the ones in this movie in real life. I don't think its as gross as the guy gross out comedies.
I think this film portrays girls in a realistic way and its hilarious, I would definately recommend it if you're into some crude humour. Its a fun movie that you can go and just laugh! It doesn't try to teach its audience anything.
Its really good, I'd recommend it only if this is the kind of comedy that you'd be into. I also liked the bond that these three girl friends have between each other because that's how girls are in real life.
Someone noted that it was kind of sitcomish but you know that's just how girls are and this is how they really act, and the movie portrays that very good.
Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley (1918)
A great silent film
This is a great silent film and I very much liked Mary Pickford in it. Its basically about a working girl with a widowed mother and her siblings, she works as a cigarette girl at a bar and meets a wealthy guy. When he gets in a fight she takes care of him.
This upsets her boyfriend, and she begins to fall in love with the wealthy guy. However things turn sour when he takes her home to his socialite aunt, who wants to "improve" her. This movie is also a satire of wealthy people and makes fun of them.
Things go terribly wrong and she must then decided if its the trouble going through all this just for a guy.
This would've been different had it been in present day America, but this was the 1920's and I think that the film was smartly written.
Clueless (1995)
An awful version of Emma
Amy Heckerling knows how to make movies for teens. Clueless was not only a hit with teenagers but it launched fashions and a new vocabulary for teens to use. Its loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma but its vulgar sensuality and profanity will offend many. We see the wealthy Cher transform from spoiled to a down to earth character. That's all, there's no message except to being a better person.
However the movie is a silly little piece of fluff. I wouldn't reccomend it. If you want to see a great film that's more true to Jane Austen's Emma, check out the 1996 film of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Or if you're a teenager you might want to check out Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon. Its a much better movie than Clueless.
