Rare Exports Inc. (2003)
Short comment on a short film
While this is a very entertaining and humorous short film, it is also worth mentioning that it is a ad for Woodpecker Film showing their flair, know-how and expertise. This company has produced a lot of advertisements, some music videos and a like. Some of the ads are for Finnish military, drinks and food stuffs.
Watch some of them at Woodpeckerfilm.fi
The movie it self is a work of genius, using Finnish landscape and popular beliefs, so to speak, as the source for the mid-movie surprise. The narrator is very convincing with the low movie trailer type voice and makes for a funny emphasis.
Elephant (2003)
Disturbing and void of emotion
The weird thing about this movie, is the views it gives what U.S school is like, supposedly. I have no idea, but from this movie it looks like a daycare center for teens, which was almost as disturbing as the events the movie ends with.
This movie is very much similar to Gummo, in that both movies are very empty and bleak. Shot more like documentaries, following different people around tho which you get no connections to. When all these people are shot, viewer's feelings are similar to those of the killers. Cold and uncaring.
I didn't like this, but neither did I hate it. I felt more like watching a documentary about a subject I didn't much care for. Pity, since this movie could have been loaded with questions, ideas and answers. Now it had none.
I'd give this movie neutral score, or 5/10
Tasogare Seibei (2002)
Beautiful, stylistic and nicely paced. A Masterpiece.
I've just seen the Japanese Oscar nominee and I have to say that Twilight Samurai is really worth the fuss. I was a bit skeptical about it at first, but the movie is really nice to watch.
At the end, a mini-spoiler: I loved the tempo of it, you got into it slowly, but didn't have to make efforts into the subtle undercurrents, like is the case with some Japanese movies. This movie was nicely paced and very easy to follow, not that I was missing any of the depth i was expecting to see. Simple plot that was carried out stylistically and with the grace of a calligraphy master. I really started liking the Iguchi family by the end of it, the little girls were simply charming and would have been very disappointed if Seibei wouldn't of got... what he wanted, so to speak. Excellence.
Hassisen kone - 20 vuotta myöhemmin (2001)
A little look back and a average reunion gig
As Hassisen Kone was a groundbraking band in the finnish mainstream music of the late 70's, this DVD couldn't really be a dissapointment. Though i found it a shame that there wasn't more stuff from the 'good old days' when they were still young and had strong ideas. All of the old material is really interesting, i really enjoyed the (older) live music too, even if the sound quality was a bit poor. Most of it is taken from the Tuuliajolla-documentary (Adrift).
The reunion gig the band played in the Ilosaarirock Festival (2000) is here in full too, as far as i can remember anyway. 17 songs from that gig, almost all hits included.
Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (2002)
Just under two hours of entertainment, Gary Oldman is never bad either...
I wanted to kill some idle hours and this movie did just that. It was not meant to be a deep movie as far as i see, but a light snack with a sideorder of fantasy. And as such, it did a good enough job. Gary Oldman could just stand there and it would also raise the value of the movie...
All in all, good enough entertainment.
