Mechanical Bulls (2023)
Incredible Low Budget Indie Movie
I absolutely love this film. I read that this was made with just $9000 which if that is true is even more impressive. I appreciated that the dialogue in this film was much more developed than that of some higher budget Indies I have watched recently. May & Jane's relationship is explored with such nuance, and the actors do such an incredible job portraying this unique and layered friendship.
The Zach & Finn storyline is equally as fun to watch and despite the joyful comedy, makes the viewer feel a little sorry for everyone. They do a lot less talking compared to May and Jane, but the silences are performed beautifully, and it makes you really wonder if anyone means anything they are saying.
There are so many lies in this movie it makes me wonder if there's any point at all where anyone here actually tells the truth.
It's a quirky indie movie in just a few locations that pokes fun at a immature, privileged friend group, who all seem oblivious to the outside world, and along with some really great comedic scenes, the movie does make you question what it means to be a friend.
Babyteeth (2019)
INDIE FLAWLESS
Babyteeth is one of this films that sneaks up on you and changes everything.
There are twists and turns that you won't think is possible coming from an indie movie, but it turns and turns and turns. It is fun to put yourself in these characters shoes because they are complicated yet relatable and they are absolutely not two dimensional in seemingly any way whatsoever.
It is filmed spectacularly, and I re-watched this with my daughter who's 7, and even she kept commenting on the incredible camera work involved in telling this story. The production design, the directing, editing, truly everything is so meticulous and does a great job creating this meaningful story.
La Pointe-Courte (1955)
MUST WATCH - INVENTED CINEMA
This film needs to be part of more and ALL film discussions. Agnes Varda did more than any other film director, and she deserves all the credit in the world. This is such an incredible, thoughtful, meaningful film that everyone should watch!
I did not find out until many years later that this was Agnes' first film. Clearly, she was meant to bring films to life, and I hope streaming services can make films like this more accessible. Why do films like this only live in Criterion and Canopy, why can't they also live on Hulu AND Netflix AND Peacock AND everything else so more and more people can watch these masterpieces.
The Lion King (1994)
INCREDIBLE
This may be the most popular movie of the 1990's, but I NEED everyone to watch. I recently rewatched for the first time in nearly 10 years and it is STILL MY FAVE.
Where do I even BEGIN?? My newborn loves this movie, my grandma loved this movie, just about every individual who has ever experienced this film loves every second of it, and I am so so happy to be in a world where this film exists.
Also - WHOOPI GOLDBERG!!! Why do people not talk about her performance in this movie more often??? She is a LEGEND. This has to be Disney's best too. I feel like there are so many things Disney could have done better in the early days, but this one is special.
