Rome (2005–2007)
10/10
One of the best historical movies ever made
24 September 2023
It is simply a proof that when the scenario writer and the director follow the TRUE history as close as possible, the final result will be more than satisfying. When I watch "Rome" (now I am watching it second time) I always think: "Why all these other directors, scenarists etc. Movie makers have made sooo many bad choices when they have the best historians ever existed (because now we, the modern history scientists, know for the past more than anyone did ever before), and sooo many immortal classics full of breathtaking groundbreaking stories waiting for a talented men to make them in a movie?!?" And I still did not have the answer... Anyway, "Rome" is one of the best in its genre and deserves your attention.

Medieval (2022)
3/10
An improbable story
12 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I may be a historical purist but when the word comes for a movie pretending to be historical I think I have nothing to be ashamed of expecting a story closer to the real history. Alas, nothing like this in "Medieval". Mongolian warriors in medieval...Czech lands (Bohemia, at that time part of the Holy Roman empire. Simply impossible, for variour reasons. One of them: yes, in XV century you can still find Mongol warriors closer to Europe than today, for example in todays Southern Ukraine. But they can't pass all the hostile territory from the Wild Field to Bohemia because they will be killed for sure. Second reason: they will be murdered even more surely in the lands of the HOLY Roman empire because people there were thinking very bad of them and wouldn't accept them with weapons on their land. And the main reason they hated them was because they were Christians, and the Mongols - Muslims or Heathens. There still were plenty of holy wars in the 1410 or 1420. Also, the action is either too slow or too fast, the fights, which are, by the way, the only worth of thing someone could watch that, still they are unbelievable and...there is more but, with just 3 words, I am dissappointed. Why not the real story, it was and is impressive enough?!?

Taras Bulba (2009)
9/10
Epic
23 September 2022
This movie which is based on the classic novel with the same name written by Nicolay Gogol, is an epic drama-action that did not shame the original. It is an epic even if based on real historical events, therefore more similar to the Homer's Illiad or other legendary warriors' epics than something following the historical data or romance for love etc. Even if there is a love story in the movie and the book. Highly recomended to anyone who likes stories about great legendary warriors to whom honour is above everything else. Taras Bulba is a hero who defends his vallues: Tribe/Nation; Kazak war-comrades, Bravery, Knightly Honour, even at the price of losing his life and sacrifice his own sons. I think I've already mentioned it but it IS AN EPIC for the brave men.

The Last Duel (2021)

Better than the rest
30 November 2021
A movie much better than the rest appearing in our days. I can almost say that until now there was no better made movie - in terms of costumes, armaments, weapons (even if some of them look a bit more like XV not XIV century but I may be wrong in that) makeup, scenario, actors - on medieval subject. I really enjoyed watching it and my 10 stars vote worths every star in it. I can only hope for more movies like this one appearing in the future. Cheers!

El Cid (2020–2021)

Unique historical movie to enjoy at last
5 October 2021
I can almost say I haven't seen better movie devoted to medieval history for many years. A real quality production, the requisite, the fantastic decor of the remain medieval Spanish towns, castles, Alhambra etcetera. I feel very happy I had the privilege to watch the first season of El Cid. Both that TV series and Peres-Reverte's book on El Cid are fantastic works of art transfering us to the world of XI century Iberia. I can only hope the second season would be as good as the first and for another so well made movies like this one.

Hernán (2019– )

One of the best stories
18 February 2020
The series try to tell us one of the most dramatic and interesting stories that happened ever in the course of the human history of this planet. The story of the conquest of the New World; of Cortez and Moktesuma! It's useless to say I like the idea behind the movie, not so much the performance, alas. Even older, Apocalypto is stil better, such kind of movie cries for the best possible financing in order for the final result to be satisfying. The task is not easy - recreating a world so totally different from ours, with 99 % of its architecture destroyed, with massive battles involving thousands of participants. And I would like to see them in movie with this plot, not Gandhi! Anyway, the movie is far from bad, worth seeing. And we can thank its creators for the effort!

Could be better
20 December 2018
These series have nothing to do with the old Stephen King's stories. And it is not even his style. However, the inspiration of uncle Stevie is visible. The plot is interesting, the action - not bad. But it could be better, there are so many unexplored plot-lines, a few boring cliches, some not well explained things... Still, the movie deserves your attention, and I am very curious about what is going to happen in season 2.
