Hot Dog ...The Movie (1983)
Don't let the haters fool you.
I have been enjoying this movie for many years. If you are looking for a serious ski movie, look somewhere else. If you want a fun raunchy comedy with plenty of nudity with a ski competition as the backdrop this is your movie. It definitely plays plenty of classic movie tropes and has fun with it. This is one of those it's so cheesy it's great. It's a classic snobs v/s the slobs story and also has plenty of awesome freestyle skiing action. The eccentric members of the Rat Pack make for a fun bunch of supporting characters, and Rudy was the perfect villan. Plenty of T&A and gratuitous sex even for a movie of that period. Then there is the infamous Chinese Downhill to settle the score between Harkin and Rudy, an all out combat on skis winner take all run. This is a fun movie that doesn't take itself very seriously.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
How not to adapt an iconic series
The live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop was very anticipated but in the end was disappointing. They strayed too far from the original source material. Casting of the main characters was great, they definitely captured the personality of their respective characters. Mine and most fans biggest gripe is how they changed the dynamic of the character's relationships. Having Spike as the older character to Jett totally messed things up. Jett was always sort of the father figure to our motley crew of bounty hunters. Plus Jett knew all along about Spike's history as a former syndicate assassin. The biggest thing that rubbed myself and other fans I talked to is the way they messed with the triangle between Spike, Vicious and Julia. Especially the fact that Julia was apparently playing both of them and then cucking Vicious. I am in no way detracting from the performance of the cast especially John Cho's portrayal of Spike, he said in an interview that he studied the character in the original anime to get all of his mannerisms down cold. I didn't mind that the scripts were a conglomeration of several episodes, though I would have liked to see some original stuff inspired by the episodes. It was a good attempt, but the powers that be behind the show missed the mark big time.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Don't let all the haters sway you
Been meaning to write this for a while. The haters want you to believe that this is bad, it is quite the opposite. Yeah Adam and Skeletor get taken out in the beginning. People also forget that the original series has a couple of strong female characters. Teela and the Sorceress have always been strong characters. The first half focuses more on character building and Teela finding the inner strength she always had and leading up to the revelation of who her parents really are, and her ultimate future, and bringing Adam back to the mortal world. Episode 5 leaves us in a huge cliffhanger. Episode 6 picks up with Teela tapping into her as of yet unseen power to save Adam once more. The scene you see in the trailer where Skeletor is gloating and Adam starts laughing at him and Skeletor suddenly stops and asks why he is laughing is hilarious, then Adam calls forth the Power of Grayskull, but without the sword to act as a regulator he becomes Savage He Man and proceeds from trash Skeletor. Part 2 is a roller-coaster ride culminating in an epic battle to save Eternia and Orko's triumphant return as a total bad ass sorcerer. The plot twist at the end leaves things wide open for another batch of episodes bringing in another group of associated characters.
Megaforce (1982)
Not as bad as some make it out to be
This movie is a lot better than some make it out to be. It's a fun in your face comic action movie. A lot of over the top acting, cheesey jokes and dialogue, cool vehicles, and awesome stunt work. This was Hal Needham's vision of a stunt filled action film. You knew that it wasn't a serious action film with Barry Bostwick as a gold lame clad action hero. With Hal Needham as the creator, director, and producer you knew that it was going to be loaded with tons of wild stunt work. He even cast himself as the commander of the Tac-Com vehicle. Supposedly one story attached to the production of the movie is that they approached the US military for ideas for the assault vehicles and the military said that they had nothing of the sort. Then after the movie came out one of the branches of the US military contacted them for the designs for the assault buggies because they saw that it could IRL be a rapid response all terrain assault vehicle. If you take the movie for what it is, it is a great movie. BTW for me the best "money shot" is the wide overhead shot when our heroes are making their escape across the dry lake bed trailing multi colored smoke.
Big Hero 6: The Series (2017)
Not as bad as some reviews say it is.
I was happy to hear that the series was coming. It picks up basically at the final scene of the movie where Hiro finds Baymax's control chip in the rocket fist. Then Hiro manages to reconstruct Baymax and the team goes on to become the city's masked defenders. Some are griping about the series animation VS the movie animation. The movie was 100% digitally animated whereas the series is hand drawn. To do the series in digital would be cost prohibitive even for Disney.
The new characters are definitely great additions, and how the core characters have evolved is great too. Some storylines are pretty serious and some are just fun. They strike a nice balance. Overall I find the series very enjoyable.
ReBoot: The Guardian Code (2018)
It has potential despite a slow start
Screw the bad reviews. I am a fan from the beginning and liked it. I just got done watching TGC and the only real negative thing I have to say is that the beginning was very slow paced up until the last couple of episodes. The 5 teenagers playing the primary characters did a very good job in fleshing out their roles. It was interesting to see that Mainframe apparently was Austin's dad's computer. Then when we met the infamous user that would input the games I almost fell over laughing when I saw his shrine to the original show in his room. The giant Mike the TV statue was cool to see. Hex was her usual creepy self and Megabyte also appears to have his own agenda outside of being The Sourcerer's pawn. One plot hole I can see was how was Hex still active even though Mainframe was powered down. Once Mainframe was powered back up it was fun to see Bob, Dot, and Enzo. Now they did say that they could visit Mainframe any time they wanted. I could see them coming back for information on Megabyte and Hex, and maybe working with Bob and Dot so they could travel safely from Mainframe and help them in Battling The Sourcerer, Hex, and Megabyte. Now the big question are the rest of the classic characters going to appear? Granted V.E.R.A. could help them catch up on things that have gone on in the 20 years that Mainframe was powered down. Maybe even get Mainframe some upgrades to make it more compatible with modern systems. I think this show definitely has potential if it is handled right.
The Orville (2017)
Fun to watch, better than the critics say
I anxiously awaited the show since I had heard about it, so far I have not been disappointed. Some have not had good things to say about the show, but there have been only 2 episodes so far. The first episode did a nice job of setting the stage and introducing the cast of characters. They struck a nice balance of drama and comedy. Granted the character personalities and interactions are still developing but I can see some very fun and interesting situations. The show is still is developing so we really can't fully judge it yet till there are a couple of more episodes out there. Hopefully Fox learned from the way they ruined Firefly and does not repeat the same mistake with The Orville.
Bless This House (1995)
It didn't get a chance
The network shafted Dice big time, because of how they killed the show off. The sad part is that the entire show was basically recast and repackaged as The King Of Queens. The parallels are to close for it not to be that.Just compare the characters and you can see they are all basically the same characters repackaged for the new show. OK IMDb is forcing me to stretch this comment out, I already spoke my piece about the show but it doesn't seem to meet their ridiculous 10 lines of text minimum. A suggestion to the powers that be at IMDb. Drop or reduce the minimum lines of text. It may be fine for those who write books about their opinions, but for those of us who are quick and straight to the point it screws us over.
Last Action Hero (1993)
A brilliant Parody!
First of all I have to say the reviewers who trashed this movie wouldn't know a good movie if it came and bit them in the ass.
This movie was a brilliant send up of the entire action film genre. They did a hilarious job of blatantly setting up just about every action film cliché they could come up with. I loved how Arnold was able to basically make fun of himself in this movie. Some of the Cameo appearances were incredible. My personal favorite is the scene when they enter the LAPD HQ. The biggest problem the movie had was that too many people were expecting a real action movie, not a parody of the genre. You could say Danny did one thing a lot of us dream of when he actually became part of the movie for real. BTW the AC/DC video for Big Guns is a gem too loaded with clips from the movie and ultimately seeing Arnold transformed into a super sized copy of Angus Young and even mimics him during the guitar solo.
Detroit Rock City (1999)
A teen comedey with one of the greatest bands ever
What can I say KISS,KISS,KISS. Yes I am a big Kiss fan. The movie is a great movie as teen comedies go but add the hottest band on the land, it puts it over the top. I was a bit younger than our 4 intrepid heroes at the time when the movie is set so I could relate to the culture they represented. It was sort of a trip down memory lane to recall my days in Jr High. The soundtrack was one of the greatest compilations of 60's & 70's rock (and a little Disco) that I have ever heard. Joe Flaherety stole the scene when they got him stoned on "Magic Mushroons" I was ROFLMAO in that scene. Seeing Porn legend Ron Jeremy as the MC at the strip club was a hoot too. Overall in my book it rates as one of the best rock movies ever.
Riding Bean (1989)
A movie for car chase fans
This is a movie that is almost all action from start to finish. Our unlikely hero Bean Bandit and his sexy partner Rally Vincent keep us entertained all through the movie with non stop thrills and chases. Kenichi Sonoda, the creator is a big fan of American action movies, and incorporated that style into the movie. The scene when the chase goes under the elevated railroad tracks is taken almost frame for frame from the Blues Brothers. (NOTE: watch the licence plates of the cars and you may fins some gags on them. )
UHF (1989)
A hilarious Tour-De-Farce
This is one of the most underrated comedies ever! I have been a fan of Weird Al ever since I first heard My Bologna on the Dr. Demento show. The parodies in the film are peices of inspired geinus! The extras on the DVD are worth the wait. BTW according to Al's website he is in the studio working on his next album. If you haven's seen the movie yet, it is a great work of comedy.
Rock & Rule (1983)
A piece of Rock N Roll art
I first saw this movie on HBO sometime in the early 80's and later proceeded to record it. I watched this movie so many times over the years I practically wore that tape out. After all these years it still ranks as one of my all time favorite non anime animated films. The soundtrack is one of the greatest unreleased soundtracks ever! The style of the animation and the early CGI were ahead of their time. People always mention the similarity of the look of Mok and Angel, but has anyone noticed that Omar does have a slight resemblance to Robin Zander and Dizzy kind of resembles Bun E Carlos without a moustache, and Stretch is a total caracture of Rick Neilsen. The duet in the finale with Robin Zander and Debbie Harry is an incredible song. Thankfully a couple of years ago my regular source for anime fansubs got a hold of several copies of the movie first generation off the laser disc, and as a bonus it had the music videos recorded from a broadcast of USA network's Night Flight.
The Blues Brothers (1980)
An Original
IMHO this is the original big budget action comedy. Who would have thought a SNL sketch that started as an audience warm up act could have been turned into one of the greatest action comedy films of all time. Just the car chases alone are some of the greatest chase scenes captured on film. It must have been a stunt driver's wet dream to get on that film. Remember there were no special effects in the chase scenes except for the back flip by the Blues Mobile and the fall from the sky by the Nazi's Pinto Wagon ( remember those cars...BOOM...). If you love action and car chases you have to see the movie. Anyone who has seen Kenichi Sonoda's work on the anime movie Riding Bean or his anime and manga series Gunsmith Cats can see the references to the Blues Brothers.
