Borgen (2010)
Absolutely the Best!
This is the best tv series I have ever seen. It is so watchable that r-watching always seems like you are watching for the first time and you see little things you missed in previous viewings. This show deserved many more acting awards than it got. The casts are brilliant, and Sidse and Pilou are extraordinary, as are many of those in smaller parts. The construction of the episodes and pacing are excellent.
Very clever writing and character development throughout the whole series. Only a couple of episode plots are less interesting than most.
It is very refreshing to see female characters presented as total individuals and certainly not subordinates. The added 4th season is not quite as entertaining as the original 3 but is also of the same very high quality.
Absolutely superb series all around!
Ripley (2024)
Could the police really be that stupid?
The whole thing spins around people not realizing Ripley has taken over Richard's identity, but at some point way before the end would not someone have wanted to see what one or both looked like, especially since they wanted to find them? And the rich guy certainly moved in circles where his picture would have been taken and appeared in mags or newspapers.
And how could the inspector not recognize that Ripley was the same guy he interviewed as Richard. What with his voice not disguised and his mannerisms in plain view.
Some pretty scenery, and nice photography, and a great performance by an observant cat, but poor casting (ages, lack of charisma) doom this effort.
Of Human Bondage (1964)
Worthwhile for Kim Novak performance
Kim Novak 's portrayal of Mildred is by far the best of the 3 that have been filmed (Davis, Parker). It is rather blistering. It is one of her best performances, along with Middle of the Night, Strangers When We Meet, and Vertigo. She was grossly under-rated as an actress during her prime. Didn't seem to fit the expected mold at the time. Otherwise the film is rather minor - not bad but not special or particularly memorable. Lawrence Harvey is not very compelling or particularly sympathetic. The musical score is quite effective and memorable. Appropriately filmed in black and white. Supporting performances on the mark. Effective cinematography.
