Je ne rêve que de vous (2019)
Terrible
Monsieur Heynemann is rather prolific. He has created over 30 films since the late '70s, but this is the first of his films that I saw. I suppose that he is a director with political concerns, since many of his movies are about the German Occupation, a rather popular subject for french artists. A woman in love with Leo Bloom, the legendary socialist political leader, follows him after the defeat of the french army wherever he goes. It is rather natural, as far as she loved him, since she was a teenager. Everything is pretentious, boring and dull. We watch people talking about the war in luxurious villas. All the characters are shallow and false. This is a movie for people who know nothing about cinema and politics.
Qui? (1970)
CINEMATIC ASSASSINATION
Leonard Keigel made a few movies, and everyone must be grateful about this. The movie QUI ? Is probably his best, so we can't say that he had many things to give. Nevertheless he was co-founder of Cahiers de Cinema, so he managed to sit on director's seat a few times and have some fun. He was only having fun, nothing else.
It is rather difficult to judge this movie. There is nothing to be judged. The plot is trivial, the actors just say their words, the director doesn't do anything. His target is to create a film in the style of Chabrol and Clouzot, but he only manages to create a very-very long commercial.
Don't watch this movie. It's terrible !
Le poulpe (1998)
A BORING FILM
Monsieur Nicloux is not a rather famous. Although he has directed over 20 movies and episodes for tv series, he remains unremarked. It is better to remain unremarked. This movie is one of his best, so you don't want to watch his lesser achievements. Technically it is a thriller. An amateur sleuth tries to solve a mystery. So far so good. Unfortunately there is no plot. The hero, who is rather unlikeable, wanders, has sex with his girlfriend, visits bars and other suspicious places and talks about the meaning of life with various characters. The director tries to create an existensial film noir, but the only thing he achieves is a boring, pretentious film. Watch it, only if you want to have fun !
Preuve d'amour (1988)
AVOID THIS MOVIE
Monsieur Courtois is a relatively unknown modern french director. Unfortunately this is something fair, because his movies don't have anything worth mention. This one is his first feature film and, to be honest, is terrible. Hithcock is a major influence for french directors but it is not enough loving a director. Monsieur Courtois wanted to make a film a-la hitchcock, the protagonist gets into trouble, although he is innocent, but that's all. A journalist who doesn't know, who is after him and why he is after him, a beautiful prostitite,, Paris by night, sex, phoney atmosphere and nothing else. This is a movie for film students who want to have some fun. Noone else can watch it without a feeling of boredom and fatigue.
O melissokomos (1986)
DEAD BEES
Theo Angelopoulos is probably along with Tarkovsky and Antonioni the most overrated director of modern cinema and this one is one of his worst movies.
During his long and rather successful career he used to do the same thing again and again. He was lucky, because the cultural environment in Greece after the fall of the junta was rather art house friendly and he became quite easily the archbishop of "serious" cinema in that little and backward land of the Balkans.
His movies are copycats, or rather pastiches of works by other directors. A bit of Antonioni, a touch of Bergman, a lot of Tarkovsky blended with traditional greek movies and sights of the greek countryside. Let's see a bit closer this movie.
The script is minimal, or rather trivial. Spyros, a retired teacher marries his beloved daughter and then sets off on a journey with his bees (!!!) following the track of the flowers. During his journey he encounters other beekeepers, who protest for the slow death of their craft. Spyros is desperate and has lost his will for life. But suddenly appears a young girl, who follows him. She is a beauty and he falls in love, but in the end he lets her go anf commits suicide by letting his bees attack to him.
Only by reading this synopsis someone can understand that the movie has similarities with some movies directed by Antonioni and Tarkovsky. Of course it is not unusual for an artist to pay tribute to other creators. The problem here lies to the point that Angelopoulos just pays tribute. He doesn't have anything to express. This is a bad movie and a waste of time.
Le grand pardon (1982)
GODFATHER FOR THE POOR
French cinema is rather notorious for its lack of depth and this movie is a first rate example of bad cinema. The plot is trivial and the characters rather conventional. To be frank, there is no plot. The director watched THE GODFATHER, loved it obviously and decided to make a copycat. An old but rather likeable jewish gangster tries to hold his empire, although he feels the heat by police and other professionals of his trade. It could be a funny movie but there is a rather serous problem, everyone takes himself very very seriously and the result is rather tiresome. Don't watch it, it 's a waste of time.
