A promising directorial debut from Finn Wolfhard that shows off the young actor's skills as a promising and confident director and writer. Looking forward to what he comes up with next! Kudos to the actors, Billy and Artoun.

Not For Everyone, But Oddly Charming
26 June 2020
There's something oddly charming about JJ Villard's Fairy Tales.

There's the obvious gross body horror for humor that can be crude and tasteless, but at the same time, oddly charming. From the animation, to the music, to the voice acting, this is a twisted dark comedic spin on the classic Grimm's fairy tales, which themselves, weren't too cheery either.

This show isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, there was just enough charm, love and creativity to keep me watching. Boypunzel, especially is a fantastic episode. If you can get over a certain scene, you do find yourself somehow becoming invested in Boypunzel's innocence and happiness. Also quite enjoyed the Goldilocks episode.

It's not all grim shock value, there is definitely winning charm and heart to these episodes.

The Turning (2020)
7/10
Much to unpack ... especially with THAT ending
24 January 2020
Somewhere in Floria Sigismondi's film, there is a decent movie. Heck, I'd even say for the first half of this movie, it was a solid B psychological horror film. Definitely something I could play in the background or get lost in this gothic fantasy world of large mansions, horseback riding and maze grounds.

Because I will give credit, that this is a beautifully shot movie with very gorgeous gothic imagery despite the forced jump scares. Floria Sigismondi and her team did create a beautiful "world" with the set production + cinematography.

All the actors were excellent and did their best to elevate the material they were given. Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince all played off each other very well. Barbara Marten was also fantastic. They carried this movie and deserved better.

It's a shame the script wasn't written by someone more skilled and nuanced, because there was so much that could have been explored of the ghosts and the children's suggested trauma. Miles' relationship with Quint and Quint's influence/corruption on Miles. Flora's trauma of not wanting to leave the grounds. So much was set up and teased, but never fully explored.

Then there's Kate's trauma of neglect and abandonment issues, possible mental abuse from her mother that's all there in the subtext.

The ending though. THAT ENDING. I definitely see why people hate it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It makes me think there was an alternate cut and they went with this route, which may have been the "safe" route in the studios' mind, but instead, it effectively threw everything out. The original novella hints at a lot of the dark stuff the kids may or may not have witnessed and this movie seemed like it was going in that direction until the last 10 minutes.

Zatch Bell! (2003–2013)
Pretty Decent Anime and Dub
8 May 2005
When I first watched "Zatchbell!" on Cartoon Network, I admit, I was very skeptical, I was expecting another butchered up anime, ie: "Rave Master", "Pokemon", and "Yu-Gi-Oh!" But to my pleasant surprise, "Zatchbell" was original and definitely entertaining, if not humorous with a touch of warmth.

I'm sure the names were altered to suit American viewing audience but the anime itself is excellent. The voice acting is pretty decent, with resident voice actors like Steven Blum ("Cowboy Bebop," "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex," "Wolf's Rain," "the Big O!" ), Crispin Freeman ("Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex," "Wolf's Rain") and Debi Derryberry ("Jimmy Neutron") at the helm.

The characters are all pretty well developed. The main character, Kiyo, is the smart, hothead, taciturn, stubborn head who doesn't have any friends (unless you count empty headed Suzy); but when one day his father drops in his birthday gift, Kiyo gets more than he bargained for: his best friend, Zatch, a Mamodo sent from the Mamodo world to do battle with the rest of the Mamodos, also sent from the Mamodo world to earth, to team up with a human partner and become King of the Mamodos. "Zatchbell" is sort of analogous to "Pokemon" except its the Mamodos that are fighting each other to gain "power," plus they can speak the human language. Each Mamodo is assigned a book from which the human counterparts read spells from that allow the Mamodos to perform amazing capabilities like shoot lightening from their mouths or move at lightening speed.

The show's certainly nothing like the anime greats, "Cowboy Bebop," "Trigun," "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex," and "Fullmetal Alchemist," but it certainly can stand alone by itself with memorable characters and a decent plot.

Overall, "Zatchbell!" is a pretty entertaining anime that shouldn't be missed. I give an 8+/10 B+++

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–2003)
10/10
Gundam at its Best
19 November 2004
This has got to be one of the best Gundam shows out there today. The animation is everything modern technology can offer, amazing choreographed fighting sequence and perhaps, one of the most intriguing plots.

The basic plot to Gundam SEED is a war has broken out between the Earth Alliance (Naturals or normal human beings) and ZAFT (Coordinators or genetically enhanced human beings), and two friends, Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala are pitted against each other. Mobile Suits come into play when the Earth Alliance secretly begin to produce Gundam Mobile Suits, to which Zaft is intent on obtaining. The attack on Heliopolis not only allowed Zaft to capture four of the Alliance's mobile suits, but reunites Kira Yamato with his childhood friend, now enemy, Athrun Zala. Kira like Athrun is a Coordinator and his decision to help the Naturals deem him a traitor and pit him against his fellow Coordinators. Kira must now fight in the Strike Gundam against Duel, Buster, Blitz, and Aegis Gundams as the seemingly never-ending war continues. Casualties will amount on both sides, forcing both Athrun and Kira to battle relentlessly.

One of the first things that drew me into the show was the vibrant colors and the character development. You have the protagonist, Kira Yamato, who is a conflicted and emotional teenager. And though he is extremely skilled at piloting a Gundam, he rather live peacefully rather than fight. Every time a death occurs on or off the battlefield, he feels it's his responsibility, thus the toll of characters that die throughout the show, effect and burden him immensely. He is extremely sensitive to other people's feelings and does not like taking the life of an other. Some may accuse him of crying too often, but I view his breakdowns as human, which is a reason I like his character so much.

His relationship with his old childhood friend, Athrun Zala, is extremely heartfelt, because it is obvious the two don't want to fight each other and care immensely for each other, yet they're forced to fight against each other. Notably, the supporting characters in this show are extremely memorable. Athrun's teammates, Yzak, Dearka, and Nicol have interesting character developments, rare in a lot of anime shows. We see Nicol as an aspiring pianist with hope for a piano playing future. He looks upon Athrun as an older brother and is very kind and supportive of Athrun. Both Yzak and Dearka's personalities are further developed later on in the show when we see them both make surprising decisions and completely different sides to their characters. There are also characters on the Naturals side like Mwu La Fllaga, Murrue Ramius, Sai Argyle, Fllay Allster, that are memorable, especially in their relationship with Kira and how they affect him to fight.

For once, the main female leads are not annoying. Lacus Clyne and Cagalli Yula Attha actually have important roles in the series. Lacus as the emotional and physical healer and supporter for Kira, while Cagalli is the tie between Kira and Athrun. The awesome aspect of this show is that it has characters worth caring about and excellent voice overs. The only disappointing factor is, if you're watching the Cartoon Network version, a majority of the more violent and graphic scenes are completely edited out and makes the events happening in the show, lose it's full potential and true effect.

The music for Gundam SEED is extremely compelling and perfectly accompanies the show. In my opinion the best songs you hear are "Invoke"

by T.M. Revolution, "Meteor" by T.M. Revolution, and "Anna ni Isshodatta no ni" by See-Saw.

Overall, Gundam SEED is an excellent anime show with compelling characters, and fantastic animation.

Troy (2004)
10/10
A Movie of Epic Proportions
24 May 2004
This year's starting blockbusters of the summer include TROY, but don't expect the movie to be anything like the epic poem, 'The Iliad'. Characters that die in the poem live in the movie and characters that shouldn't die in the movie live in the poem. There's a reason why this movie is called TROY and not 'The Iliad', as the movie's ending credits clearly point out that the movie was 'inspired by the Iliad', so don't watch TROY expecting it will be like 'The Iliad'.

TROY, directed by Wolfgang Peterson, is entertaining from start to finish, considering it contains three of the most hottest men in Hollywood: Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom, all in skirts. The movie starts off in ancient Greece, where Trojan Prince Hector (Eric Bana) and Prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) have come to Sparta on a diplomatic mission to make peace with Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), the Spartan king. Unbeknownst to Menelaus, Helen (Diane Kruger), his wife and Queen of Sparta, is having a passionate affair with Paris, the Prince of Troy. Their love will ignite a war that will lead to endless destruction and devastation of both countries. Thus when Paris steals Helen away, Menelaus is insulted and wages war against Troy with his brother, Agamemnon, (Brian Cox) who finds this a perfect excuse to conquer Troy. But in order to conquer Troy's vast defensive walls, Agamemnon needs the help of Achilles, (Brad Pitt) believed to be the greatest warrior alive. And thus ensues a vicious battle fought over greed, honor, destiny, but most of all, love. And for love, a nation will fall and burn to the ground, leaving history its most devastating story ever.

Brad Pitt is perfect as Achilles. Besides his finely chiseled body, which for some reason the director felt had to be shown in almost every scene, his performance truly brought out the defiant, arrogant, rebellious, invincible warrior side of Achilles. However, Pitt's acting was wooden in a few scenes, which is hard to blame him because he is a terrific actor and it isn't his fault his lines sound so lame. The fault goes to the atrocious script that David Benioff wrote and the terrible soundtrack James Horner offers. Orlando Bloom as Paris, still needs to hone his craft; however, he played Paris convincingly enough for the audience to understand that Paris is a womanizing, pathetic excuse for a warrior. His best scene is when he loses to Menelaus and crawls back to his brother, clutching his brother's leg, imploring Hector to save him, showing the coward that Paris really is.

But the true star and savior of the movie is Eric Bana with his excellent portrayal of Hector, the heir and Prince of Troy. His performance was truly memorable and his screen presence was captivating; he was one of the film's few truly sympathetic characters. Bana is very convincing as this passionate father, son, husband, and warrior all wrapped into one human being. His battle scene with Pitt is perhaps the best and most riveting fight scene of all time. Bana conveyed perfectly all the expressions of love, anger, fear, hatred, pride and suffering in his eyes, while Brad just looked fierce the whole time, even in his death; the only exception was when Achilles sobs over Hector's body, which was Pitt's best scene. Helen's scenes, played by Diane Kruger, are nothing short of contrived; in fact, they're barely bearable. She looks stupid half the time and there is no chemistry between her and Bloom, but she is no doubt beautiful, but it is very hard to believe that her face is the face that launched a thousand ships. Instead, Saffron Burrows who plays Andromache gives easily the best performance out of all the female characters. The chemistry between her and Bana is very believable.

In the end, it all comes down to Eric Bana's brilliant deliverance and TROY's terrific CGI sequences. The choreographing for the battle scenes can be at times, tiring but it's nothing like The Matrix Reloaded's monotonous fight scenes, in fact the battle scenes in TROY were very well done, but don't expect any Oscar award winning performances, save Eric Bana's. TROY is just a nice summer blockbuster to get viewers excited about Spider-Man 2 and Harry Potter 3. It's a nice way to spend $9.50 and 3 hours in a movie theatre, plus it's a perfect excuse to watch and drool over three very good-looking men with very chiseled bodies.

Final Fantasy VIII (1999 Video Game)
10/10
FFVIII: Fantastic RPG GAME!
4 November 2003
For all the crap that Final Fantasy VIII got by not being a 'fantasy' game, it truly is a unique and outstanding game that is undeniably unforgettable in the best selling video game Final Fantasy series.

First, for a video game done in 1999, Final Fantasy VIII's FMV (Full Motion Videos) graphics were awesome! From the intro I was already swept up on my feet, hanging on to every last detail of the garden, brilliant fight scene, and glimpses of Sorceress Edea to the last and final ending FMV, which was completely worth the hours of gameplay. What's impressive was that for the intro, you're treated to an amazing training battle between Squall and Seifer, where both of them slice up each other's face...graphic but an awesome and def memorable fight scene.

Second, the score is awesome! Again, the intro with 'Liberi Fatali' to 'Eyes on Me' to 'Man with the Machine Gun' to 'Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec' to 'the Oath', really the orchestration and score is moving and beautifully done! Worth buying the soundtrack!

Third, need I mention the terrific FMV graphics again? Yes, there is a drawback to the game, the ingame graphics for FFVIII are terrible compared to FFIX and FFX, but you overlook these and you begin to appreciate the intricate plot lines and character developments. One of the most beautiful locations you go to is Esthar city, it's really breathtaking. Another FMV is the awesome Dollet clip, terrific graphics of machines and Squall's escape: it's one of my favorite scenes next to the dance clip!

Finally, the story and its characters. You have your main character, Squall Leonhart, as the taciturn and reluctant hero and lone wolf who is, in my opinion, one of the best looking RPG characters there ever was, who's specialty is the kick butt Gunblade. The detail is amazing! Then you have your supporting characers, like Rinoa Heartilly (Squall's love interest), Zell Dincht, Irvine Kinneas, Quistis Trepe, Selphie Tilmitt, Laguna Loire (Squall's dad), and Seifer Almasy (Squall's rival and nemesis).

FFVIII is a classic love story. The hero is aloof, yet underneath that tough guy act is a vulnerable 17 yr old, who tries not to care about anyone and the heroine turns his world upside down! After series of rescues and all, the ending FMV (one of the most memorable RPG endings of all time) will definitely sweep you off your feet and conclude this classic love story.

The FFVIII story is set in a futuristic world full with sophisticated technology where an evil sorceress corrupts the world's largest military power through manipulation and deception, enslaving mankind to do her bidding. And it's up to a small, loose-knit group of SeeD graduates led by Squall and he must become the leader he never wanted to be, and defeat this sorceress.

Yes, again, it didn't have your 'fantasy' elements like dragons and magic, save Sorceress Edea, but in a way, FFVIII is a 'fanasty'. First of all, it's set in the future, that's already your step to 'fantasy'. Next, the futuristic weapons and machines were wonderfully done, believe me, you'll come to appreciate the dollet scene, where Squall's on the sub and the wind is blowing in his face: terrific! The thing was that Final Fantasy fans were disappointed in FFVIII because it was no longer set in the 'past' like the previous FF games, but I think it's a nice change and definitely an awesome change, because it set the groundworks to FFX. The battle costumes to Squall's signature fur jacket outfit and Gunblade to Rinoa's blue costume with angel wings on the back...I loved it! Fans and new players should appreciate the captivating the story line, (great looking) characters, beautiful FMV, and moving soundtrack of Final Fantasy VIII. It was also a breath of relief for me, because the charactes were finally tall (at least compared to the other FF characters and just down right kicked butt)

So, despite the complaints of FFVIII being to futuristic and the not so great inplay graphics; the music, FMVs, plot, and characters will make up for it and blow you away!

10/10 GREATEST GAME I've ever seen, next to Final Fantasy X and VII, although I think FFXI will be just as awesome! Buy the game and play it out, it's worth the time and the money! Final Fantasy VIII ****/**** Stands alone as an awesome RPG game and in the FF series.

What's amazing was that after the game's release was a sudden fad when people went crazy over the Rinoa angel wings, Squall's Lion symbols, and the beautiful song: Eyes on Me.

X-hilarating Phenomenon of 2003!
19 May 2003
X2: X-Men United This movie was awesome! I don't think this as the sequel, its more similar to the movie. The first X-men was more of an introduction to the 'war'.

The movie has everything: From awesome actors, to an extravagant mind boggling plot that will take you on an adventure that will reel you beyond your wildest imaginations. X2 tries to give a bit more of screen time, this time, to most of the important characters. Fans will be extremely pleased because Colossus gets a bit of screen time too! There is a bit of romance, but its not all out. We see a relationship develop with Rogue and Iceman. Ofcourse Rogue does still have a girlish crush on Logan. It's hard not to.

Girls if you love Hugh Jackman, this is the film to watch. There will be just a tiny scene with him and Jean Grey... Jackman, again, does a wonderful job portraying Wolverine. The film combines humor and action to create a film that is unforgettable. The casting is superb and nobody can miss the fighting scenes especially with Nightcrawler in the whitehouse and the fight Wolverine has with Lady Deathstrike. The fight between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike is fleshtearing and very painful to watch. The fight is intense and moviegoers can't help but wince everytime Deathstrike stabs Wolverine. Special Effects was awesome, the movie excelled beyond my wildest imagination. All and all, this is one amazing film with awesome special effects. It is not to be missed! This movie is set perfectly for X3 and it by far surpasses X-Men.

A firm 10/10 in my book and 5 stars out of *****as well! Enjoy the film!

A Subtle Disappointment
19 May 2003
I saw The Matrix Reloaded and I must say for a sequel, that it was disappointing. Not only does the second film of the trilogy leave you hanging on the edge of your seat with the famous `To be Concluded…' the script was horribly written.

I must admit, Reloaded has awesome effects, far superb than the first Matrix. However, it lacks that awe and sense of wonder as the movie progresses. Neo (Keanu Reeves) has practically less than 10 lines…The script and plot are the downfall to the movie. Not only that, but every fighting scene leaves the audience thinking: `been there, done that' The movie is not boring, but it does lag, especially at every dialog between characters. The fighting scenes between Agent Smith(s) and Neo was amazing, the car chase on the freeway was interesting, but not compelling. Neo's powers as `The One' get more exuberant and elaborate every time he uses him. His flying ability is overused and by the last time he uses it you just breathe a sigh of relief. Through out the movie, the every little twist that happens in the plot that proves that Neo is the One is overwhelming and overused. Every impossible situation is always solved by Neo.

Matrix Reloaded lacks the certain charm and amazement that viewers encountered while watching The Matrix. Due to the elaborate fighting scenes which were compelling in the first movie, the second basically redoes the same thing, this time with out guns (remember Neo dodging the bullets, well in the second movie nothing like that every happens, its just all hand to hand combat). The movie's action scenes make up for the dull script, especially when viewers encounter the lines of ` cause and effect'…and scenes are extremely choppy.

Matrix Reloaded can not be compared to any other movies that are coming out this year or have already come out. The Matrix Trilogy are a legend in their own kind, a phenomenon, and perhaps the reason viewers can be agitated by the second movie is due to the dull script, Matrix 1 makes up for it I can't advise not seeing this movie, because if you don't you will miss a lot…on the other hand, I'm irritated by the plot and the dialog that I want to say: Skip it. But alas, I shall say `watch it' just because you might be `wowed' byt the action scenes, and if you have seen the first Matrix, you don't want to miss out on any part. X-Men 2 is probably a better movie, because of the plot and actors. But you can't compare X2 to Matrix 2 because Matrix is given a lot of leeway which allows it to do have mind boggling fight scenes because the encounters are always in the Matrix. Where as X2, you don't fight in a computer or machine, but hand to hand combat (vicious in Wolverine's case) Again, X2 is not necessarily the better movie (but is in my opinion it is compared to the Matrix 2) but it is the better sequel. By that I mean that it is better than its predecessor is. Matrix Reloaded was a disappointment, its was definitely overhyped and lacked plot.

All in all, I give Matrix Reloaded a B+, an 8 out of 10, and 3.5 stars out of ***** Hopefully, Matrix Revolutions which comes out in November 5, will fare better both in plot and in action. Oh yeah, remember WB decided to do what it did for Harry Potter, there will be a preview of Matrix Revolutions after the credits so stay after to view it

5 January 2003
This David Copperfield version was alright

The best version ever is the 1999 BBC version of David Copperfield. All I can say is that the oh so cute, Daniel Radcliffe as David Copperfield is just so adorable.

The only person that bothers me is the older David Copperfield.

Everyone else is perfect especially, Uriah Heep (ooh! very perfect and creepy), Dame Maggie Smith as Aunt Betsy is even better than Sally Fields!

I recommend the BBC version than this version

This adaptation by far beats all the David Copperfield movies.

Daniel Radcliffe as David Copperfield is wonderful! He is so angelic as David.

The Acting by all the adults in this film was wonderful! Agnes, Peggoty, Aunt Betsy were all portrayed well! At least, they were all better than the 2000 Tv version of David Copperfield.

Uriah Heep is wonderful!!!!!Very creepy! Dora is perfect too!

watch this! I recommend it!

That is all I can say.

It made me cry

I loved it

William H. Macy is at his BEST!!!!

This movie, though only a tv movie, should deserve an Oscar or at least an Emmy

Bill Porter is a triumphing person (whom this movie is about) who has inspired everybody, including me, never to give up: "Patience and Persistence" as his mother taught him, he used it, and so should everyone

This is better than A Beautiful Mind, or any Lord of the Rings junk. This is about life, a man, a hero who conquered.

An incredibly touching movie worth seeing

The cover bothers me a lot
1 May 2002
The cover of the movie bothers me a lot because Haley Joel Osment is NOT the leading role in this movie, and they just had to stick his face on it. The real star is TREVOR MORGAN!!!!!!

Who has been in The Patriot, JP3, The Sixth Sense (as the bully), and The Glass House, and currently he is in the Rookie.

SO give this kid credit! He is brilliant!

Overall, I'll Remember April was sweet and a really great movie! It is wonderful for the family...You'll love it!

Awesome! The Best!
28 March 2002
This movie was awesome! The best Romeo and Juliet movie ever. The costume and acting was wonderful!

The actor, Leonard Whiting was extremely hot! Most actors for either Juliet or Romeo are extremely not right looking or can't act.

Olivia Hussey was very pretty and I would have wished both Leonard and Olivia were given more credit for they truly deserved it.

I gave this movie an A. I think if Leonard was acting now as a youth he probably would be a Ben Affleck of our time. I strongly advise you all who are reading this to watch it and buy it. Its actually worth your time.

another movie I would recommend would be the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I know most people judge Leonardo as a horrible actor due to his famous role in Titanic, however truthfully if you seen What is Eating Gilbert Grape? you would know that he is a pretty good actor. Besides the 1996 version was very funny and had a lot of great art direction. No wonder it was directed by the same director of Moulin Rouge.

So getting back on track, I urge you all to see both version especially this version. This version was a lavish and eloquent movie. The setting was wonderful, a great classic for a Shakespeare version. Basically go see this. It's worth it!

I give this movie a 10/10 :)
