All of Me (1984)
If you don't like laughing don't see this movie.
I've seen this film time and time again... can never stop laughing. The plot does stretch it a bit but... who cares? 1 of the 3 best comedies I've seen in my life. If you enjoyed this film try 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' with Steve Martin and Michael Cain.
Be warned, if you don't have a sense of humour don't even think of watching this film, but, on the other hand you do there is nothing like watching Steve Martin in the court room taken over by the other half inside him {who happens to be a woman - Lilly Thomlin}. You'll keel over and, literally, cry from laughter. And if you'd like to pee yourself altogether the scene in the men's room when he's trying to take a leak, and he happens to be right handed, and his right side is the woman's side will, without a doubt, do the trick!
Long live slapstick humour. Steve Martin is a genius at making us laugh. A bit of a modern day Jerry Louis and then some.
A Passage to Middle-earth: The Making of 'Lord of the Rings' (2001)
Good, but nothing can match the book.
It was an honest attempt to capture the magic of this awesome epic and the film would have seemed even better if it did not have the book to compete with. I most certainly did enjoy the film but, simply put, something was seriously lacking. Entire chunks of the first part of the trilogy were taken out and Bilbo Baggins was a bit of a disappointment... Being a huge fan of J. R. R. Tolkein since my very early teens I should not have gone into the cinema expecting so much from the film because, in candor, there was no way that the film could possibly ever compete with such a timeless book. The ultimate adult fairytale. I suppose I was disappointed by the hobbits generally because I was expecting something more rotund, so to speak. I mustn't be so harsh, though, because it was an enormous attempt... but how can a book which took 40 years to write be made into a film in 3 years, despite all the hitech technology of the the modern times? There is nothing better, in such a case as this, as the movie you can create in your own imagination while reading the book.
I must add that I thought Gandalf was wonderful. I was delighted because I thought that the producers had got him spot on just as Tolkein {and every reader} would imagine him.
My advice: lovers of the Hobbit and the trilogy don't go to see it with high expectations that the film can possibly match the books. Despite every effort made it was a bit of a let down and the end was an anticlimax if there ever was one regardless of the fact that this is probably the way it should have been done because it is only 1/3 of the entire story. Do what I'm going to do; wait until all 3 films have been made so you can flop out and completely vegetate in front of your T.V. for approximately half a day and get much more enjoyment out of it because you won't be left dangling and subconsciously wondering 'The rest of it?'.
Other movie goers who haven't read the books: A bit long, the special effects were great {as I said, an honest effort to glorify the author's great work of literature}. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, but again, you will wonder... The rest of it?
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Can't get much better than this...
Fantastic movie... historically close enough, too...
There wasn't a dry eye in the theatre and this wasn't only because of the events depicting the attrocities performed by man in his 'fight for survial'... The actors were superb... Congratulations guys and gals...
Ben Aflick had the women salivating... he wasn't an eyesore to me either... he outdid himself, his acting was great!
If this is your regular Hollywood consumer trash then give me heaps more of it and that's coming from a woman who speaks 3 languages, teaches 2 of them and has an I.Q. of 180... Regardless of what many film critics may say, the film was worth seeing and then some... most 'Quality film' critics usually don't generally know what they're talking about anyway. They seem to think that behaving like overeducated English butlers makes their opinions valid and everything is hunky dory... but we the illiterate masses beg to differ, hey?
Way to go Ben... all the best for the future...
The Mummy Returns (2001)
Completely unbelievable and I enjoyed EVERY minute of it...
I wasn't disappointed after having seen The Mummy. Everybody was yahooing in their seats... which I think was the intention of the film... It had a great sense of humour, but then, Brendon Fraser always carries it off well.
It's the kind of film you would enjoy seeing again and again. Mindless rubbish it may be but we all need a break from reality now and again. The sets, the costumes, the heroes and antiheroes were all larger than life and literally filled the entire cinema from the big screen. Brendon was your classical 'sensitive on the inside, I adore my wife, rough round the edges slightly intellectual' hero... basically an oversized little adventurous boy in love... and the people loved him for it. But, didn't we also sympathise with the mummy in the end also?... Terrific twist... we didn't expect to show any positive emotions for that nasty number and the Scorpion King whose megalomanias made them hell bent on conquering everything and everyone... I loved the fact that we had 2 villains determined to turn each other to dust before having to deal with our 'cowboy', Rick. But the real villain was the woman of the Mummy's veeeery long life... Rick's wife showed us one of the positive sides of a woman whereas the other one showed us what absolute bi...... women can be... {I'm a woman and what I said is God's honest truth}. We were cheering in our seats when she finally got what was inevitably coming to her.
Take a break from the everyday rat race, give your brain a rest and see this film on video or DVD if you haven't already seen it. It delivered everything it promised...
