In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Loved it.
In a way, this movie is a modern-day merge of the 12 monkeys and Terminator.
It starts off with an immediate bang and has you hooked. Then, it deviates from what most would expect and goes full-on sci fi.
Now, some of the plot points were a bit obvious, but great storytelling makes up for those.
While many people rant about it being a) antifa or b) anti-antifa, I really disagree with both. The motiv was to prevent a future war from happening, so all those killings were, in fact, justified. Sure, we may not reason the same way if it were real life, but a movie has every right to "untell a story" :)
Hellraiser (2022)
Not terrible - But it ruined Pinhead for me
While the movie was very much entertaining, and even scary from time to time, I can't help but rant. Anyone who has seen the original film probably feels the same way.
It was off to a promising start. It did resemble the hellish 80s saga with a hint of Gen Z atmosphere. And it felt like our favorite anti-heroes are sooo back!
And then it turned out that Pinhead is, in fact, a Disney princess. Now, I guess that the feminine touch was added on purpose and that it does come with another type of value. Still, a massive chunk of the original character's appearance (and fear factor) was lost
So while I truly wanted to love it, it was just like Hellraiser Light.
The Visitor (2022)
I don't get the hate
No idea why this little gem gets such a low score! Personaly, I thought it was intriguing and creepy. And while I do agree that the end could have been way better, I don't hate it.
This is where the spoiler alert goes into effect - this movie's ending tried to match the atmosphere (and bottom line) from classics like The Omen and Rosemary's baby. And while the idea wasn't bad at all, it could + should have been executed in a more appropriate way. And, in this scenario, appropriate = more devastating.
Still, the first 90% of the film deserve an applause. It's engaging, tense, and leaves you with a subtle sense of dread.
A Dark Song (2016)
Boring with a severe lack of horror
I've seen my share of good, bad, and terrible horror movies. This one is: none of the above. 🙄
It can't be labeled as "horror" to begin with. More like a very weird and prolonged drama with a hint of supernatural.
The acting wasn't particularly good either, and there's no actual story line.
And no, I wouldn't call it "slow burning" because literaly *nothing* happens.
However, the music is just perfect. In my opinion, that's the only redeming factor here. And also the only genuinely creepy part of this film.
I can see that many liked it, but, unfortunately, it will remain a mystery to me what's there to like.
