Lost in Space (2018)
Not to be compared to the original...it stands on it's own!
I have to admit, I was very sceptical. I loved the original 1960's series as a child. I looked over various reviews of the new series and really expected that this would be a dud. However, I have now finished watching episode 3 and I have to say, I'm hooked. Some reviewers have accused the series of being very PC (politically correct) in it's diversity. The original series was certainly not WASP. Guy Williams (John Robinson) (born, Armando Joseph Catalano) was an Italian-American actor, Marta Kristen (Judy Robinson) was Norwegian and Johnathan Harris ( Dr. Zachary Smith) was clearly LGBTQ. This series is bears no more resemlance to the 1960's series than it did to to the original "Swiss Family Robinson" story. It is far more a psychological thriller. It is about each character, with a unique psychological makeup (one who is certainly a psychopath), copes with the challenges, traumatic experiences and relationships. When viewed independently from it's predecessors, it makes for compelling and intriguing entertainment. I expect that there will be much to be revealed in future episodes. I have say, I love the robot!
Run Robot Run! (2006)
More of a charming fantasy than a comedy
After reading the reviews, I wasn't expecting much, although I have seen some of the actors, especially Chris Gibbs and Sandy Jobin-Bevens, in live stage performances (scripted theatre and improv) and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I was taken more by the charm of the characters than the comedic material. Chris Gibb's in-person and his on-screen persona and his dry sense of humour reminds me of a young Bob Newhart. Obviously low-budget, but a polished production. I first heard about this movie during the 2005 Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival, where Chris Gibbs was appearing in a show and, appreciating his kind of humour, always looked forward to having a look at the film. I'm glad I finally got to see it!.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Loved this movie!
Before I watched this film, I thought it was going to be a comedic farce, however this was a deeply moving piece. During the movie, I kept thinking to myself "the characters really ring true". Ryan Gosling's performance was brilliant. I can't believe he didn't score an Academy Award for his work. A great actor approaches this type of role with subtly and restraint, while a poor actor goes over the top. Ryan Gosling is certainly the former of the two.
I have seen other films with Gosling such as Blue Valentine and he has become my favorite young actor. I think he has a great future as an artist.
