Green Lantern (2011)
7/10
I've read some of the other reviews...
23 June 2011
I've read some of the other user reviews and I find a lot of them laughable. Was this a great movie? No. Was it a bad movie? No, of course not. I went into Green Lantern the same way I would go into - oh I don't know - a "Hangover" movie. You pretty much know what you're going to get. I suppose, however, that most of the same critic wannabes I had the displeasure of reading will probably go into the "Smurfs" movie with their quippy lines and well thought out rants already typed up and ready to send. It's easier to jump on the band wagon, than it is to be honest I guess.

Personally, I thought Green Lantern was fairly good. Now, I should preface that with the fact that I already knew a bit about the ring wearing superhero before going in. That doesn't mean, however, that I wouldn't have been entertained otherwise. In fact, I thought the movie was entertaining. Granted, it seemed rushed (and it was), but I left the movie theater feeling neither giddy nor disappointed. I jut wanted more. I wish there was more. More action, more fighting, more build up. Just...more.

To those of you bashing the special effects or the storyline...you obviously don't know much about Green Lantern. And that's fine. This movie obviously isn't for you. Have fun watching the "Smurfs".

There was really only one crucial flaw in this film...
5 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I thought this was a very good film. Very good! It was very well done, acted, shot, etc. The only real flaw in in this film is that the film makers tried to pawn it off as a documentary of sorts that supposedly shows you actual events that were caught on tape. Obviously this is not the case. This film is completely fictional. However, had they not tried to disguise it as truth, this film still would have been very good! It was very engaging and had some chilling scenes in it that make you wonder. Really wonder. They didn't need to gimmick it up to try and trick people into believing that what they were seeing was real.

Oh how the mighty titans have fallen
6 April 2010
I, being a huge fan of the original, was probably more excited to see this movie than anyone. And in 3-D no less. So...I walk into the theater with my 3-D glasses on my head, holding my $5 popcorn and get ready to watch my favorite childhood movie and...and...and...oh no. Oh no. This is awful. I sat through the movie wondering why I don't care about any of these characters. On top of that, I'm wondering why I spent the extra money to see it in 3-D. The best 3-D effects came during the opening credits. Other than that, I could have thrown the glasses away. Now I know why James Cameron is not a big fan of making films 3-D after the fact. To make a long story short, I was incredibly disappointed. I would not recommend this movie to anyone. Go see the original "Clash of the Titans" if you want to lose yourself in a good movie. After seeing this one all I could think of was "oh how the mighty titans have fallen."

Unbelievable...
6 January 2010
Preconceived notions and tons of hype did not ruin my experience of this movie. And I mean that in a good way.

Even though this was the same tried and true formula that Cameron has used in almost all of his movies (unlikely love, the stereotypical corporate bad guy, and action, action, action) I was more than pleasantly surprised at how it all came together - even if it was predictable. The visual effects were amazing - especially in 3D - and the acting was superb. This is why we go to movies and this is why James Cameron will go down as one of the best storytellers ever. If you weren't a fan of his work before, you most certainly will be after seeing Avatar.

Max Payne (2008)

Wow....
26 October 2008
Let me first just say that I AM a fan of the video game. So I, like others who have commented on here already, was really just looking for a fun action movie. I didn't expect it to be Oscar worthy or anything like that...just a fun time at the movie theater.

That being said...I was extremely disappointed at this movie. Actually, that's being nice about it. This was such a poorly executed story that I nearly walked out. Seriously, seriously bad.

The visuals were nice, but even THOSE were too stylized and even painfully funny to watch at times (most of the time). It seemed they were trying too hard. And for an action film, there sure was a lack of action for the first 3/4 of the movie.

Now the acting...I honestly felt I was watching a student film with some of those scenes. Ludicrous was just that. Mark Wahlberg was OK at best. Donal Logue - awful, Mila Kunis - out of place...the only bright spots were Chris O'Donnell and Olga Kurylenko (who is smoking hot).

Bottom line...I would not recommend this movie to anybody. I'm not even sure how this got made to be honest. Especially with the amount of money that was poured into it. Amazingly bad.

A MORE than pleasant surprise...
8 November 2007
I didn't go into this movie with much expectations. The trailer was OK...the storyline was borderline OK (done a zillion times)...and lets face it, looked like the target audience was anyone over the age of 30 (no offense to anyone over 30).

That being said, I couldn't have been MORE wrong about my pre-conceived feelings. This was absolutely one of the best films I've seen all year. It is laugh-out-loud funny, it has some very real and tender moments and Steve Carell's performance is just brilliant.

Anyone, and I do mean anyone, who sees this film will leave with the feeling that they just saw a diamond in the rough. I honestly wish that more people would go out and experience it. I was truly blown away. The writing, directing and acting were all phenomenal. Just an all-around great time at the movies that everyone can enjoy.
