The Harbinger (2022)
Good, could have been great
Just too low budget for my taste. I don't watch low budget indies and I gave this a try. It's better than any low budget indie I've seen but it still can't stand up next to a major Hollywood studio movie. That said, as the movie played, I thought less about budget and got more invested in the story.
And don't get me wrong, we've all seen that movie where someone grabbed a cell phone and shot it in the backyard. I'm not accusing this movie of that at all. But I've seen comments say something's missing, and that something for me is money. It looks and sounds fine. For me it's the difference between a Corolla and a Lexus. They both get the job done, but you know luxury when you experience it. I have to say the second half of the movie looks better than the first. Maybe that's where they put their money idk.
If I had to give any other criticism I would say the acting is good but they could have explained earlier why they were acting so weird. With the smaller parts, I like the style of acting but you don't find out why until later.
The parents act secretive and odd from the beginning and we don't find out why until about half way through. I can tell they're both good actors and their acting gets better as the movie goes on. I wonder if just finding out in the beginning why the parents are the way they are would have made it better? It's hard to say because it's supposed to be a mystery and I get it - They can't give things away. That said, kept my interest.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
3rd best sequel of all time, maybe 1st or 2nd
I just don't know how you beat Godfather part two. I have to give second place to aliens.
But before you think I'm trashing James Cameron, let me tell you how amazing I think this guy is. Terminator two is in my opinion the third best sequel of all time, but I could easily be persuaded it could be number two or number one.
This is how amazing I think James Cameron is: he literally has never made a bad movie. Two of his movies made the most money a movie has ever made at their respective release dates.
I'm not even sure any other filmmaker will ever be able to compete with that. He is simply amazing.
The Terminator (1984)
Is James Cameron some kind of god?
How the hell does he do this? This is an amazing first or second film. Then he does aliens, the second best sequel of all time behind Godfather part two in my opinion. Then the abyss, Terminator two, the third best sequel of all time in my opinion.
Then true lies, titanic, the biggest money maker of all time at the time, then avatar, the biggest money maker of all time at the time. Wtf.
What does he have that the other filmmakers don't? That's a real question. How the hell does he do it? Everyone else has the same screen writing books. Everyone else has the same how to knowledge on how to direct a movie. If he's not a god, perhaps he was touched by one.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
Best sequel of all time
I have kind of waffled between aliens and this movie but this one gets the crown.
Those the only two movies I can think of where the second movie can give the first movie a run for its money and quite possibly surpass it.
What can I say? This is Robert De Niro at the peak of his powers. This is Al Pacino at the peak of his powers. This is Francis Ford Coppola at the peak of his powers. Diane Keaton. List is endless.
I can come up with a negative thing to say about almost every movie but for the two godfathers into aliens, I come up short. Masterpieces. All of them.
On a sidenote, I just researched why Robert Duvall is not in the third one and they said he wanted too much money. I kind of lost respect.
Aliens (1986)
Best sequel ever made?
I'm gonna say Godfather two and this. I don't want to knock alien because I think it is a masterpiece but this thing has slightly surpassed it.
Maybe a better way to say it is the alien is that slow burn suspense where you are trying to figure everything out. There's not really much mystery going on in aliens but it is still masterfully done in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat. We of course know what the monster is already in this movie but we love it.
I just read a whole thing about how David Fincher got screwed over on the third alien movie and I feel bad for him having to try to live up to the first two movies. I just don't see how you could ever match this. Cameron's a genius.
